A mother's love (P for gavin)
Though she'd lost Angel to Azizi, she still had Gavin and Liam. And even though she was terrified Azizi would come back, she let the boys wander. She could only hope Angel was safe. She truely had no way of knowing whether or not her daughter was okay.
She let her mind touch briefly on the thought of Deacon. She hadn't scented the golden brute in quite some time. She doubted he thought of her nearly as often as her traitorus mind lingered on him.
She laid down on a rock, unknowingly taking Luna's favorite rock. This rock was also the rock the alphess would use to call the pack together. Perhaps she she should call a pack meeting one of these days. It was a good idea, after all. Just a simple rollcall to see who lingered.
She closed her eyes, drifting off in the warm sunlight. The dog days of summer were on the pack lands. In deadwood, the heat would be blazing, but in Magestic Vista, the heat was wonderful.
The heat, the young prince did not mind. While at times he found it to be suffocating in its own way when he tried to over-exert himself while on a wild goose chase of his fantasies, Gavin found it very tolerable. In his own mind, he almost felt like he could control the weather, and if he wanted a cool breeze and he thought about it hard enough, sure enough one would present itself and feel good to the golden-haired boy. Majestic Vista's grounds were perfect for his little games and his clever, mischevious mind to weave out fantastic stories about what he had scared away.
On the other hand, he had found his share of gross things that even to him were gross, but for the sake of making himself seem like he wasn't afraid or affected by anything, he would ignore the urges to cringe, and at the same time he also secretly wanted Angel to be there so he could scare her with it. Gavin was naturally curious about where his sister had disappeared to, but unfortunately he honestly didn't know, and almost didn't care. He felt like mummy dearest favoured him and Liam the most, and that she was just an afterthought. Yet, even that didn't make sense because Deuce had seemed sad sometimes when both he and Liam would skirt away on some adventure.
But recently, Gavin had struck out on his own, venturing out to stalk things in his mind while Liam did what Liam... did. Whatever that was, he didn't really care. Luna's rock stood out for a change against the Vista's foliage, and while instinctively he knew that his mother was there, his mind changed it to some dragon, some monster that needed to be fought off. His mother was the mountain, and her tail was the beast. Creeping through the brush quietly, with his eyes locked firmly on the target, he suddenly broke into a run and leapt for her tail, proclaiming his victory. "Aha!" he cried, grabbing the fluffy end of her tail in his mouth and giving it a gentle tug.

Deuce jumped as she felt a tug on her tail. Turning, she gave a smile as she realized it was her son, gavin. Her little battlehawk. She turned and pounced gently, pinning him down tenderly, and began to bathe her dusty golden child.
My, Gavin, you are dirty...what have you been up to, darling? And where is Liam? You two are supposed to stick together, you know. She released her son with a final feline like lick to his cheeks, making sure they were clean. Her son was her pride and joy, the boy looked just like his father.
He gave a beaming smile at his mother who claimed that he was dirty. Of course he was dirty, because he was a boy and boys played in the mud and all of the nitty gritty things on the ground. "Dunno," the golden boy responded at her question about Liam. "I's think he went back ta da' den." Maybe he had, and maybe he hadn't.
Squirming underneath her leg, he was happy when she let him go, and he licked her chin right back as if she had gotten some dirt on it in the transfer. It was a vigorous type of wash, more of a loving kiss than a bath. Tail wagging, he clamboured up on her warm body and took one of her ears in his mouth, gnawing on it ever so gently. "Why's youse sittin' out 'ere ah-lone for, Mama?" he asked into her ear despite part of it being in his mouth. Gavin didn't think that he had ever seen her sitting on the rock before without Liam or Angel, or even him crawlling all over her after this that or the other.

The mother had to laugh softly at her son's exuberance. He was simply adorable. And yet...his question made her remember what she'd been thinking about, and she nuzzled his gently, even with her ear in his mouth. He was so...rambunctious.
I was just thinking gavin. She paused a moment, then decided to tell him about his sister, in a way. She'd decided it was easier for him to remember his sister as she was, and not as the pet of that bastard, Azizi. Sweetie, there's something I need to tell you...your sister... She took a breath, then continued. Your sister fell into the river while we were fishing. I couldn't save her. Gavin...Angel's gone.
He had let go of her ear when her tone had turned solemn. Instinctively his little ears had folded backward and he had adverted his eyes from her face when she said that she had something to tell him. This meant one of two things in his mind. One, he had done something wrong. Two, there was something else wrong. But what came next he honestly hadn't expected. "Huh?" he said softly, not sure how to react. There was a surge of emotion that intangled itself momentarily into the picture, and he thought of the river and it's swift and swirling waters and then Angel swirling around in the waters.
He bowed his head for a moment, shoulders sagging from their proud shape and his brow developed a fierce kink. "Gone where?" he asked, not sure what she meant. Certainly the river had only carried her downstream a little a bit and she could have been sopping wet and looking for them, could have she? "Why is we sittin' 'ere? We should go look for 'er!" he demanded, rather than said. Gavin slipped down from Deuce's back and this time eyed her with a bit of a plead, knowing that she wouldn't just let him go on his own to find her. "C'mon Mama, we can find her! She not go far, I bet!" A miniscule hint of excitement was in his voice, like it was just some big game. He didn't understand the concept of life and death just yet.

Her ears wilted as her son immediately wanted to rush off and find his sister. Gavin...Angel won't be coming back. She's joined the spirits of our anscestors. This one the mother knew the child would understand. Since the pups were born, she'd tried to instill in them a healthy respect for the spirits.
She hated lying to her child in this manner, but she couldn't risk Gavin rushing after Azizi to save his sister, and getting the both of them killed. She slipped off the rock and nuzzled her child gently, comforting him.
The ancestors. Part of Gavin was immediately let down at that mentioning. She was quite truly gone. Deuce came to comfort him and for a moment he let her before he moved away, not wanting the comfort. Part of him wanted to know why she had just... died like that. It didn't seem safe, not hardly. He sighed. "Why'd she have to?" he asked, quietly. It didn't make sense, she had just been there the other day and then... she was gone.

Deuce's heart broke as her child moved away, a forlorn look on his face. It was just her time, Gavin. I'm sorry...if I could have changed it, I would have."
She could have. She could have gone to Azizi and been his mate. And in that way she could have saved her pups. But she was too foolish and prideful, and didn't take his offer, and now her daughter was gone. And she had no one to blame but herself.
She wouldn't have wanted you to be sad, gavin, she would have wanted you to be glad. She's watching over us now, and protecting us. She's keeping us safe from harm. Deuce felt like such a liar, but for both her sons' sakes she had to do this, she had to make them believe their sister was dead.
"Okay," he said, trying to smile. And while that fell on its face, he knew that his mother was right. He shouldn't have been sad because Angel didn't like people to be sad. He didn't like people to be sad either, so it seemed right, it fit. "I'll try not t'be," he said, finding it a little hard to make the words come out while his chest felt like a drum, all tight and hollow.
"Mama, will she come visit us?" he found himself asking that question just out of nowhere. He pulled questions out of thin air like he did the monsters to slay in his kingdom. He wondered if ghosts of the ancestors really visited anyone. Maybe if she did, then he could play with her... somehow. He wouldn't able to scare her with anything gross now, but maybe Liam would fall for it. He didn't know, though considering Liam was a boy and just like Gavin, he didn't think that Liam would get grossed out over smashing birds and the like.

The mother's heart broke further at the next question out of her son's mouth. Angel will visit us....but you won't be able to see her. She nuzzled her son gently, needing to feel his soft puppy fur against her cheek. She loved her children, and it broke her heart to lie to him.
I love you, gavin. And so does Liam. Us three have to stick together now. She didn't want to be one of those paranoids who protected her children from everything, including life. She just wanted to protect her remaining...no, surviving two children.
If she were going to get through this, she wouold have to resign herself to the fact that angel was dead. Dead to them, if not dead to the world. She nuzzled her golden child again.
