AOE spells, keep attack and defense
Interested in comments or suggestions on this. I've been using the lowbie earth wizard GTAOE spell in sieges just to see how it works and there are some rather unpleasant side-effects:
1. If you GTAOE attackers at the doors, the pets there are aggrod, move through the walls and kill you. When the hibs attacked eras last night I was swarmed by 3-4 underhills at once, ouch!
2. If you GTAOE while attacking a keep (such as in the lord room) and hit an archer, he will start shooting at you and you can't maintain a steady bombardment.
At one point an underhill friend came through the doors and stopped right at the siege ram. I used him as an anchor for ranged AOE DD spell and caught everyone at the doors 3 times in a row, but this was still not enough to stop a zerg that size. After my anchor died, I couldn't target them.
An ice wizard is better suited to defending the inner keep doors, but without support from the rest of the group it won't do much good. A tank needs to be there guarding and taking on the pets coming through the walls (why don't they ever fix that??). Why not a reaver, who can add an AOE pulse to the wizard's damage? Also a healer is needed to keep the wizard doing the PBAOEing alive.
Does anyone have a painworking necromancer? They all seem to be deathsight these days. Painworking necro has a DOT AOE that radiates from the pet. So the pet can stand by a keep door and DOT people on the other side? Better it than me, I say.
(I think now that the answer to the last question is NO -
a DOT AOE still has to start with a visible target, and so is useless at a keep door.)

Well I guess so, but depends where it is built. About half the time I target the ram and it says I cannot see my target. Maybe that's a tip about not building your ram too close to the door.

What some people do is run right against the door to build the ram...there's nothing worse than building a ram too far from the doors! :P Sometimes if its built against the inner door, the 'center' of the ram can be seen on the other side and be targeted. What I try to do is go against the outer doors, but take one step back from the inner doors. Its still in range, but can't be used as a target from the other side. It helps everyone's survival, including my own.

They increased the range of rams a couple patches ago as well, you can actually take a couple of steps back IIRC. Makes it nice to have yer ram pointed straight at the door and ending right on the button.

THe painworking line for the necromancer is a good spec. Only thing wrong with the AE dot is that you have to position your shade to face ur pet to cast that spell. Frustrating some times.
