Crawl and 1OOO

Alien Movies Maybe this belongs in the Entertainment forum. It can be moved if need be. Though I do reflect that these movies have influenced a lot of games in various ways (aside from, obviously, those directly based on the Aliens movies - Alien Trilogy for example). The boss halfway through Contra's final stage has a head that looks like the Aliens' heads (or maybe his head looks like their tongues). And the scorpions that surround the heart look like face huggers - and the things they come out of look exactly like Alien eggs. These creatures also appear in Super C and Gradius 2. And the final stage of Contra 3 looks very much like that big ship from Alien (where the eggs were found) and also like the aliens' hive in Aliens. Contra probably has lots of references to other alien sci-fi stuff, though. The blonde dude's pose on the cover is a reference to Predator's cover. Of course, R-Type has Alien's references - most obvious that famous stage 1 boss, which even has a chest burster. Metroid, too. The space theme (might be vague, there), the female hero... Ridley might be a reference to Ridley Scott. Horrifying, parasetic aliens that wiped out the civilization of the planet they were found on. Anyway, the movies. I'll stick my neck out here and saw that the effect of the first movie is greatest after you've seen it, not while you're seeing it. (I also have to confess that some of that movie's special effects seem a little dated to me, who has seen so many "making-of" specials. The opening shot of the Nostromo going over head - an obvious quote of Star Wars' opening shot - looked a little more like a minature than that Star Destroyer. But I also have to say that what I imagine are matte' paintings - the inside of that alien's ship, the planets in the background, etc. - were beautiful). Of course, Alien was a slow movie. That part where the captain was killed did get a jolt from me. But mostly, it left seeds of intrigue in my mind. I wondered about that alien race whose member was killed in that ship. How long ago did that happen? How did the Aliens meet that more sophisticated society? Fascinating stuff. (Though it looks like that thing died fairly peacefully, sitting in that chair and all. But maybe it was strapped in). And of course, the Alien's life cycle was very interesting. I was a little confused by the part where Parker and Lambert were killed - but then the later scene where Ridley saw the alien in the escape pod led me to believe the alien camoflagued itself in both scenes (it can look sort of like exotic machinery) But I think I liked the second movie more. Yeah, I know, in their way, they can't be compared - but I guess I liked the more immediate rush of that one. I liked the first one, but it's not the type of movie I think I'd want to watch twice in a short period of time. Again, I think there was one plot detail I didn't completely understand - why the thermonuclear things went critical at that time. They did talk about how they couldn't hit the cooling equipment while they were near where the cocoon was - but, unless I missed something, I think the final explosion was unrelated to that. (Unrelated note: I seem to remember watching this movie on television years ago, and I only remembered a few scenes: When Burke got what was coming to him. When Vasquez and that other guy blew themselves up [although even for that, the situation seemed different in my memory] When Bishop was torn in half. And when Ridley fought the queen with that mech thing, and blew her out of the air lock [and I have to admit, the physicist in me wonders if Ridley would really be able to hold on when that happened. And I also didn't understand why she had to climb out to shut the air lock, when she opened it in the shaft. I guess this isn't critical, but it is confusing] But I thought I remembered one scene where the marines armed some automated machine guys to fire when they detected movement - and a lot of aliens got chewed up by that ... before those guns ran out of ammo, that is. But that scene wasn't in the movie we saw, so maybe my memory's haywire) One thing I did NOT remember was seeing the Queen's egg sack. Which was gross! - but cool! I guess I haven't explained much about what I liked about these movies (it may seem like I nitpicked too much) - maybe I'm having trouble finding exactly what it was I liked - but I did like them. But remember they discovered a hole in its ribcage, and the one guy said it looked like it exploded from the inside out. A chestburster must've come out of that thing. I don't know if I'd call that a "peaceful" death. The only major plot detail that confuses me is how the company knew so much about the Alien in the first movie and why they didn't just send in a team who knew what their mission would be to retrieve it? ![]() I Crawl and 1000 ![]()

I LOVE FO! Yeah, I remember the chest-burster hole. But it was just a little weird that he was sitting bolt-upright in his chair with a hole in his chest - instead of, like, splayed out across the floor in agony. I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

Aliens As Crawl probably knows, Aliens is my favorite movie of all time. I've literally seen it hundreds of times. From 7th grade until well into high school, I watched it about once a week. (Seriously!) Anyway, there are lots of nitpicky things with Aliens; some continuation mistakes, others technical blunders(like when the pulse rifles are said to have caseless ammo, yet they still spit shells). The alien pilot in the first movie appeared to be "growing out of the chair." It's said that H. R. Geiger designed that race to be very organic (i.e., they grow everything), so it's possible that the pilot is really growing out of the seat. As for the reactor, I believe it was damaged by Vasquez and Drake's Smartgun fire. I always thought that was the reason, anyway. It's the only explanation that makes sense. Finally, the reason that the company didn't send a qualified squad to deal with the alien in the first movie can be clarified by Burke's statement in Aliens: "If I go and make a major security situation out of it, everybody steps in...administration steps in...there's no exclusive rights for anybody." So basically, the company didn't want to make a big deal out of their discovery. They wanted to keep it under wraps, so no one else would "claim" thier find. And no, your memory isn't haywire. There's a "director's cut" special edition of Aliens, with about a half hour's worth of extra scenes. I bought the laserdisc just to have it. (This was before it came out on tape and DVD a few years ago.) The sentry gun scene is among them. |

I LOVE FO! Cool stuff. I wouldn't mind seeing Aliens again sometime (although I'd prefer to see it with the extra scenes). I didn't notice much for glitches or nitpicks (usually things like that don't bother me anyways). Most of the special effects seemed excellent. (The only seam I can think of would be one part where it looks like Ridley is against a projected backdrop - I think it's at the end, when the base is exploding) I wonder how they made the fleshy aliens (like the face huggers, especially when Bishop was dissecting them). It really looked like flesh - I almost wonder if those things were made with real animal parts. Anyway, I read your FFX review (or should that be 'review'?) a few days ago. It was funny, even if I didn't post about it until now. I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

Re: I LOVE FO! I never really cared much for the Aliens series (or Metroid) myself. About the only thing I can say for them is that at least they aren't as hugely overrated as Matrix. -'Tamer ![]() ![]() "Young lady, stars shine only in the sky, and stars which fall to earth never shine again." --Anubis, Dark Warlord of Cruelty |
