Alternate Status
The office has received several questions regarding alternate status. What does it mean? What are my chance of getting in?
Alternate status simply means that while you are qualified to attend the program, there is not a slot for you at this time. On college applications and other materials, you may put down that you were selected as an alternate for the program, an accomplishment you should be proud of.
The chances of getting into the program as an alternate vary from year to year and area to area. For example, theatre historically requires no alternates as all those invited typically say yes. In the humanities, we may have up to a dozen students decline the invitation.
Invited students are to respond by April 24. If the state does not hear from them or if they reply and decline, it is considered a vacant spot which the state will begin contacting alternates to fill starting May 1.
My hope is that all the spots are filled by mid-May. If you have not been contacted by then, chances are slim that additional spots will open up (though we have added students to the program as late as mid-June! But that is rare.)
Hope this information helps a little.
