"the king must die" and "the bull from the sea", both by Mary Renault. Wonderful take on the myths surrounding King Theseus. I haven't actually read them recently enough to give a proper review but I loved them

Catch 22 - Joseph Heller don´t know if I´ve ever laughed so much.
Les Miserables - Victor Hugo Simply wonderful
Fantasy:
A song of ice and fire - George R R Martin Big, epic and powerful. Not for sensitive people though.
Malazan book of the fallen - Steven ERikson Huge, action-packed. A must read.
The high house - James Stoddard Wonderful, feels both familiar and different. Pretty unknown book.
Other stuff
Dragon skies series - James Donaldson Historical fiction set in 6th century celtic britain. lots of romance, fighting and singing & drinking in taverns. Great stuff.
Death on the nile - Agatha Christie the ultimate crime novel.

Other than that, just keep reading Tolkien's books over and over and over and over and...

~I'm reading George R R Martin now, too, ("A Game of Thrones") and he's GREAT! (And he just drops mountains on his poor characters! *sniffsniff*)
~ANYTHING by Mercedes Lackey (she is the BEST author other than Tolkien!) but especially her "Heralds of Valdemar" series.
~Anne Rice (need I say more?)
~"The dark elf trilogy" by R A Salvatore (It doesn't get much better than drow!)
~Tamora Pierce's "Tortall" series (it may not be as in depth as more "adult" fantasy, but it is a wonderful read!)
~Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" series (think "Hitchhikers" only as fantasy. The books are so funny! And he's writen about 20 of them, which is great!)
~Anne Bishop's "Dark Jewels Trilogy" (it's sort of dark fantasy- for example- she writes about the high lord of hell, but in that world, he's the good guy, since hell isn't ... well really hell in that series lol. It's a bit morbid, but WONDERFUL!)
~Of course, Douglas Adams and his "Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" 'trilogy'. (I wouldn't be much of a parody writer if I didn't like him! )

Am off to Fangorn with young hobbits. Leaving Daisy to deal with Legolas. Love brother dearly but after five and a half centuries of listinging to talk about hair care and clothing, cannot take anymore. Got all shirty when I accused of gaining weight. Said *I* left *my* clothes in his bag. Did not mention that he always steals my tunics in name of "fashion" since begining to think he is pregnant.

The Killer Angels - Michael Shaara - the story of the battle of Gettysburg told from the point-of-view of the Generals present there.

Ahoi! Reading Mary Stewart´s Merlin trilogy right now. Great stuff so far. Not much fighting and such, but beautifu ldescriptions and good characters. Simply brilliant writing.

Joseph Heller - Catch 22. Great story.
Joseph Heller - Closing Time. The sequel to Catch 22 is almost as good as the original.
James Clavell - Shogun. What an epic. It nearly surpasses Catch 22 as my favorite book.
And we can't forget Tolkien.

I've nothing to do!! Plus I rather liked it.
Another good read, though a bit sad, is First they killed my father by Loung Ung. Its when the Khmer Rouge take over Cambodia and the hardships that a middle class family has to go through, told through the eyes of a 5 year old girl. Its not a very pleasant read but its good.
