Batman never kills I guess this is part of Batman's code, but I never noticed it was a general rule until I heard it stated explicity. Of course, Batman never killed anyone in the '60's series (nor, as in his fight with the Bookworm's minions, would he even punch a person wearing glasses), but that show was so silly that to feature murder would completely go against the tone. Then at the end of the first Batman movie, with Jack Nicholson, it seems like Batman makes a lame attempt to prevent The Joker from falling to his death. I don't remember that scene with perfect accuracy, but I remember thinking it was odd that Batman would first shoot that rope around the Joker, that got him caught and eventually led to him falling, but then try to keep him from falling (even if he didn't try very hard). It also seemed like Batman was pretty brutal with some minions in that movie, though I guess we can't say for a fact that any died. Some people that are a big fan of Batman's "no kill" policy were actually outraged by the ending of Batman Begins, where he says to Liam Neeson, "I won't kill you. But I don't have to save you, either." They thought he should have actively tried to save the life of the villain. Someone pointed out a scene in Dark Knight Returns, where a bad guy mutant has a baby hostage, and threatens to kill it. Batman says he believes the threat, and then shoots the mutant. So, might he be willing to kill for the sake of the greater good? But then other people pointed out that he didn't shoot the mutant in the head, and was aiming to wound, not kill. But that seems like it could be a stretch; I believe a gun is *always* considered potentially lethal force. 123456 |
