Chance, History & Desire
Hi. I'm a Tolkien fan and I've been reading his work since 1986.
Years ago, I read in one of J.R.R. or Christopher's books about a concept in Anglo-Saxon philosophy which categorized events in a person's life as chance, history or choice. The Anglo-Saxon words for these concepts were given in the text of the book. I've scoured my collection for the reference, but I haven't found it. I thought at first that it was in "The Tolkien Reader", but I re-read it this weekend and couldn't find it. Does anyone remember this concept and where in the non-fiction books it can be found?
