Steely Dan
I was never a big fan, but I grew up with an appreciation for their sound. (I have particularly fond memories of my dad performing a solo rendition of "FM" for voice and piano.)
I was really disappointed with their last album. Their songwriting really lost something. I hope this new one is better (for my dad's sake, at least).

Two Against Nature
While I'll agree that not every song on Two Against Nature lived up to expectations, I thought some of the writing was brilliant. That's the trouble with doing well in the past....ya gotta keep producing more, bigger, better. The music was as complex and haunting as ever.

I guess Steely Dan's music just doesn't speak to me the way it does to you. I won't be checking out the new album, though I'm definitely going to ask my dad what he thinks of it. (For what it's worth, he agreed with me that the last album was lacking in the songwriting department.)

Steely related stuff
During the years that SD were not performing together, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker each released a few solo albums. My favorites of those are Becker's 11 Tracks of Whack, and Fagen's The Nightfly. Whack is a daring departure....much grittier, and with a harder edge than SD music. Nightfly is very much like the early SD music with a touch more of the blues thrown in.
Crescendo, if you would, please ask your dad if he's heard either of these disks. I'd be interested to know what another "Dan Fan" thought of them.
Oh, speaking of blues music....b. b. king is coming to town next month, and I've got 11th row seats!

Well, scratch off that date and circle June 10th 2003 instead. The release has been pushed back.

My Dad
In case you were wondering, I haven't forgotten to ask my dad, manniac. The thing is, I just don't talk to him very often. Our next conversation should take place in the next six months.
