Creating indoor sacred space
I do the confidant/spiritual adviser thing for various witches and friends and vice versa.
One thing I find common is a severe case of winter witchies, that is to say, winter is understandably a very hard time for us of earth based path for we tend to feel disconnected from the earth. Snow and inclimate weather keeps us indoors, desperate for spring. A good way to combat these "blahs" is by creating or recreating sacred space. The forced focus this takes forces images of light and spring into our mind. To create a space of love and light, we must FEEL love and light!!
A good place to start is by choosing the site for your sacred space. I use our master bathroom which has no windows but the toilet is broken so i am unlikely to be disturbed there. If your space has no windows, a window sized painting of water, spring natural life in general (a happy place) can make up for the lack. Place it eye height above where you plan on putting your alter. But, first things first. The VERY first step is a DO NOT DISTURB sign... this is your space, friends and family need to know that upon entering, you are disjointed upon leaving you are whole... this is your place to become yourself rather then mother, wife, sister, friend ect. (cats of course can be permitted...gotta have ur familiars near! lol)
Now, your space is secure, wash it, scrub it, my bathroom is carpeted but you may want to place a rug on linoleum. (any room can be used the bath. is just an example) but make it physically spotless, as you do this picture all emotion clutter going down the drain as the walls go from pale yellow to white again. Use a spring scented cleanser or use a vinegar wash scented with your favorite essential oil (lavender rosemary, i use jasmine)
Now your space is clean...time to cleanse. You can use a ritual broom or your hand, what ever, but focus on dispelling negativity from the site, sweep it out the door. do every inch. do this 3 times to ensure it is done, dont forget corners and under furniture!
now comes the fun part... DECORATEING!!!!!!!!!! Set up your alter to your like bring in statues of your patron diety, flowers (live preferably but in windowless rooms fake is ok) bring in your supplies candles incense and such (dollar store has nifty lil boxes for a buck complete with lid and plenty deep enough for supplies)
Above all the room should scream "I AM ME!!" your spirit should be felt all around. to ensure this focus on ur favorite things whie decorating, fav flowerm fav color, fill the room with the sense of you, so when u enter spiritually tattered, you can be pulled together by the room, for the room is full of you!
Cast a permanat standing circle from the center of the room... picturing a light the color you see yourself in meditation watch it spread from your feet to engulf every inch of the room. this way u only have to weave a "lock" on the door when entering and leaving, be sure to lift it and replace it before entering or leaving.
NOW the hard part!!
This is now YOUR space!!! be it corner closet or room!!! It is your place in the world!! Make that know, demand your space, feel that you deserve it strongly enough and others will feel your need. Not even my 18 month old will normally breach my sacred space. Because i demand it! Thats is MINE i share every other aspect of my life freely but NEVER this one!! You dont life it, i am terribly sorry. Roomates not of the path *cough bugs bunny cough* will touch your ritual things and defile your sacred objects just for spite, insist and be RUDE!!! it is your goddess given right to have a place you can be alone with your mother / father. THREATEN! do what you must and do it strongly!! (but not violently...that would make the room a selfish object and spread negativity) I hope I am making sense. and i hope this helps ALL paths, not just the goddess/ craft. this can be modified for meditation as well as ritual.

If you're talking about me, no worries here. Anthony is agnostic and respects my beliefs.
...also, I tend to think he has some psychic talent.
Do not fear the dark. Without darkness, there can be no light.

Re: Creating indoor sacred space
You make perfect sense, I wish I were able to find a way to create my own space, we have a five bedroom house with 3 baths all are occupied constantly, I told my husband I needed my own space, in the mean time I am going to get a rolling microwave cart with a cabinent and make it my altar on wheels so I can use my room and pull out the altar when I need to, he is builging a garage this summer and the shed he is currently in he is going to weatherize and put windows in for me, so once it is weathrized I can use it anytime, I can have the whole building to myself it will be a large space for me. I am looking forward to it. The other good thing is it is a good bit down the hill from our house and the kids would not mosey down there out of shear laziness lol.
thanks for the post Gaia.
love and blessings
