Cypriot communities bury first remains of missing people

NICOSIA, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Two communities in Cyprus began on Thursday to bury the first identified remains of their beloved ones who were listed as missing persons during bloody conflicts decades ago.

The remains of 13 Turkish Cypriots were laid to rest in northern Nicosia during a military ceremony. High-level officials and generals attended the funeral.

According to Turkish Cypriot sources, all the 13 people were killed by Greek Cypriot militants in July 1974 in a village near the southeastern port of Larnaca, when Turkish army landed on the north to intervene a coup by a group of Greek officers who pushed for union with Greece.

In the Cypriot government-controlled areas, funerals are being held one by one to bury the remains of 15 missing Greek Cypriots Cyprus.

The Greek Cypriots claim over 1,500 people still missing while the Turkish Cypriots said some 500 missing during the 1963-1964 inter-communal fighting and the 1974 war.

More than 270 human remains have been found so far in unmarked graves on the island.

The first 28 remains have been identified through DNA testing by the United Nations-led Committee on Missing Persons (CMP). CMP Officials fear that the whole identification process will take years.
