Death of a Great Soldier!
Some of you may have heard, but I just recently received word of the loss of one hell of a soldier.
On April 4th, 2004 Col. Aaron Bank (who is known as "The Father of Special Forces") past away at the age 101.
Col bank entered the army in 1939. In 1943, already a great linguist, Col Bank volunteered for a special assignment with new unit in Europe. Col. Bank served with the O.S.S. during WWII. Then while serving in combat during the Korean War, he was recalled to Washington to work on the creation of guerrilla-style units. He along with BG. Robert McClure and Col. Russel Volckmann helped establish the first unconventional warfare units for the U.S. Army.
In June 1952, Col. Bank was named commander of the pioneering 10th Special Forces Group(Airborne) It had a total strength of 10 Soldiers. Col. Bank retired from the army in 1958. Among some of his military decorations he earned, the Distinguished Service Medal, Soldier's Medal. Bronze Star, C.I.B. Senior Jump wings w/combat star. and Special Forces Tab.
Col. Bank was immortalized by B.B.I in their 50th Anniversary Special Forces Set. For those of us that have served in combat and in Spec. Ops. Col. Bank will always be remembered. May he live long in our memories. I'm sure he will serve with distinction in heaven just as he did here on earth.
