Devil May Cry impressions I've been playing Devil May Cry and Silent HIll 2 recently. I like Devil May Cry more, so I'll drop a few impressions. It's a very action-oriented game, and the action is pretty fast. Basically, the game is broken down into missions, and each mission involves getting through one or a few areas of a castle. The mission objectives are things like opening doors, defeating enemies, and boss fights. You have 2 weapons, a gun and a sword (or gauntlets), and you have to use them interchangably to maximize efficiency. Your weapns are upgraded as you advance. You can buy new moves, power ups, and items from shop-type statues, and you really have to strategize, because the items don't come cheap. The fights (especially bosses) are challenging, and it takes some skill to learn boss patterns and use your moves instinctively. Continues are limited, and you have to buy them. The boss fights are comparable to those in MDK 2. It usually takes me a few times to beat a boss. There are puzzles, but they are not mind benders. It's like they're just to provide a break in the action. Finally, you have a "Devil Trigger" move, in which you can transform into a demoinic form with enhanced powers for a limted time. It's a cool game, and if you have a PS2, I'd recommend it, especially if the price drops. I feel it's worth the 50 bucks I spent, though. |

I LOVE FO!
Sounds cool. FO and I went to the mall yesterday, and she saw a new copy of Maximo for $15, which she couldn't resist, so I imagine we'll pick up a PS2 someday.
I've been taking a short little break from games now, though. I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

DMC I finished DMC tonight. It was a pretty kick ass game. I plan on starting a new game tomorrow, in hopes of buying more permanent power ups instead of consumable items. (I started Hard mode, and promptly got creamed by the first boss. Badly.) Besides, I'm still polishing the controls and learning to use all of the moves I have. The timer was at 8:03, but I spent a few hours dying. Besides, 8 hours of action is better than 50 hours of stuff like Chrono Cross. A little more on the gameplay: Most of the game is in 3rd person, but there are a few stages where things are varied, such as a swimming stage and a rail shooter stage. The game has a dark look to it. It's akin to Vagrant Story, in which there's not a whole lot of visual variety, but it works well anyway. The last few bosses are tough (except for one, which I think was just a "go ahead and kick his ass because you deserve it" type thing). There are patterns to learn and good reflexes needed in the boss fights. The main problem I had was when the camera changed angles, sometimes I got disoriented. Also, when the angle changes, the control stick doesn't change until you let it center again. It wasn't a major problem, but it was a bit distracting. The dialog is also kind of cheesy, probably on purpose. Anyway, it was a good game, and I can't wait to play it again. |

DMC OK, I'm back in IL. My PS2 is back in CA still, but I'll drop some DMC final impressions. I've finished the game 3 times, and I started a fourth before I left. On my 3rd time through, I finally started getting a real feel for the controls. I can purposefully execute moves in response to enemy actions and such. Each time through, I bought a different set of moves, so now I know what I like move-wise. I also have a pretty good strategy on how to buy items to maximize my chances on hard mode. Speaking of hard mode, I tried it again after my 2nd and 3rd times through, and still got manhandled. To be sucessful on Hard, it seems the best strategy is to get really good at Normal. You have to know all the right moves and have a pretty good size devil-gauge (determines how long you can be in "powered up" mode) and life bar to have a good chance at Hard. Normally, I'd play the harder difficulty to get better at the harder difficulty, but that doesn't seem to be the case with DMC. It's like you need to be able to beat certain spots without taking a hit on normal to be successful at Hard. DMC forces you to learn your enemies and moves and learn them well. On normal, the stronger regular enemies and bosses are tough enough as they are. As soon as you're able to waste them with no problem, then Hard should be doable. I still have trouble with a several spots on Normal, but I'm getting better. The good thing about DMC being short is that you can play through it in a few hours, but it's still intense and exciting. So playing Normal a few times There's even a "Super Hard" mode available, which I don't even want to think about. Overall, I like MDK 2 more, but DMC better lends itself to completion due to the length of the game. Anyway, I was considering bringing back my PS2 to IL just to play DMC some more, but I still have 8 or 9 games in my PSX backlog. |

I LOVE FO! I've heard DMC controls sort of like Resident Evil, but I can't possibly imagine an action game with control anything like that. Is there any truth in that at all? "You have to know all the right moves and have a pretty good size devil-gauge (determines how long you can be in "powered up" mode) and life bar to have a good chance at Hard" Is Hard difficulty a New Game + sort of thing, or do you start from scratch? I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

DMC No, DMC doesn't have a "tank" control style. Combat moves much too fast to employ a typical survival horror setup. You move in whatever direction you push the analog stick. (You can't use the D-Pad, which I kept trying to do.) You still press R1 to target enemies and shoot guns, but you can swing your sword/punch without pressing R1 first. The camera angles are not static. The camera moves with you in a certain area, then changes when you get to the "limit" of the camera area. Things can be awkward when the camera angle changes, but I've gotten used to it. As for the difficulty, you must start on Normal. After you beat a stage or 2, you have the option of switching to easy mode. However, once you go to easy, you can never go back without starting from scratch. Once you beat Normal, the game starts on Hard, and you keep your items/weapons/abilities. So yeah, it's like a new game +. The differences are in Hard, you do about half as much damage and enemies do about double damage, tougher enemies replace the easier ones in certain spots, and consumable items are about triple the cost as in normal.(Permanent items/abilities cost the same.) Also, your "devil state" doesn't heal you as much. |

Re: DMC I'm glad you liked Devil May Cry. It's nice to see we can agree on a game every now and then. That's all I can say for now, because I'm lazy. Perhaps I'll dwell on this board again some other time. |

DMC Hey BSS, glad you stopped by. I think DMC is the first game we totally agreed on. (For the regs here, on another board, we had different opinions on every game we discussed.) |

DMC Dude, this game rocks so hard. I can't put it down! I restarted that game I started earlier (the 4th time though), and finished it. I started Hard mode on Tuesday, and finished it tonight. I beat Hard, and it was a total rush! I like this game more now than I did when I finished normal. Hard mode is so intense. It's totally absorbing. I can't really explain it, but it's so fun just to be fluid with the controlls and react to the enemies attacks as they happen. The fighting looks so awesome. Anyway, I started Dante Must Die mode, which is the next step up from Hard. I've beaten the first couple bosses so far. I probably won't get a chance to finish it, though, because I leave on Sat. Besides, I at LEAST want to give some other games a try. |

I LOVE FO!
I wish I would have gotten this game when it was $20. I think what happened was, that store was liquidating all it's stuck, because it closed not that long ago. Elsewhere, it's like $50. It sounds like it might be worth it, but, sheesh, we still don't have a PS2. Oh, well, I doubt DMC is going anywhere - Even if I waited a year to get it, I'll bet it'd be common on ebay.
Anyway, it seems to me it's been a while since I've beaten a really GREAT game (the last game I finished was Phantasy Star, which certainly doesn't count). I think I periodically need to play an amazing game to keep my active interest in games vitalized. I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!
