EGM A month or two back, someone at a different message board posted a link to an offer for a free trial of EGM. I decided, what the heck, and signed up for it. At the bottom of the offer was a check box to click if you wanted a subscription to continue past the trial. I figured if I wanted to continue, I could renew later, so I clicked 'no'. Well, I haven't gotten any EGM's, but I HAVE gotten a bill from them. Maybe it's not a bill in the true sense - since I haven't gotten any magazines, I shouldn't have to pay - but, regardless, they're asking for money when the offer was supposed to be free. I do like to get things in the mail, and from what I read of EGM recently (just the issue with the top 100), it was good. I might consider paying for it for that reason. On the other hand, I think it's rather low-class of them to engage in a bait and switch like that. Did I sign up too late for the free offer, or something like that? I don't know, but there's no indication on what they sent me that they ever expected anything but to get paid up front. I don't know WHY else they would have bill forms like that, because I would think in any other circumstances people would have to pay up front to subscribe. The sheer existance of that billing statement almost makes me think this thing bordered on a scam to begin with. I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

EGM
Well, EGM (Or its publisher, Ziff Davis Media) is a bit shady. They sold my address to other retailers. I know this because EGM spelled my address wrong (they wrote my sreet name beginning with a "K" instead of a "C"), and I've gotten a bunch of junk mail with the incorrectly spelled address.

PSM Every now and again, I buy a PSM or GamePro, and I am reminded why I like EGM so much. I have the newest PSM, and they have such a "Fanboy" attitude. Even Nintendo Power never struck me as being so lame toward other systems and companies. For instance, there's a top 5 PSM news stories of the last 5 years. One of them is Square going exclusively to Sony. PSM states how great of a decision that was, blah blah, Sony is so good, blah blah. Antother one is Resident Evil going exclusively to gamecube. PSM basically says the RE folks sold out, blah blah, it's going to have repucussions, blah blah. In one of the letters, a reader brings up Sega's lack of games for the PS2, and PSM replies with something like "They're making too many games for XBox, and they're all tanking, while the ones for PS2 are for Hardcore gamers and selling well." Some say that EGM is biased, but some say anyone who doesn't give [game name here] a 10 is biased. Whatever. I checked out the review scores for about 10 EMGs, and there's no significant difference between scores for the Xbox, gamecube, and PS2. It's true that EGM doesn't cover a lot of Nintendo stuff, but they said that Nintendo is very stingy with screenshots, demos, etc, and they can't cover the game if they don't have the resources to do so. |

I LOVE FO! I don't think EGM is perfect, but I do think they seem to be better than any alternative I've seen. I guess I am sort of out of the loop with modern games, so my opinion of EGM is sort of abstract (then again, I read a lot of movie and music reviews with little intention of ever seeing/hearing what is being reviewed) I remember one time Nintendo Power responded to Sega's ad compaigns. That could have been an opportunity for NP to be "lame toward other systems and companies", but Sega had made some indefensible claims, so it wasn't even necessary. NP made a disparaging comment about Sewer Shark, but that really does seem to be one of the worst games ever. And "Blast Processing" was a load of crap (but some people to this day think it's a real programming term!!) I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

I LOVE FO! My brother bought a used Dreamcast a while ago at ... Gamestop? Well, one of those stores, and it came with a subscription of a few months' worth of Game Informer. It's a magazine I'm really not fond of at all. Someone else recently posted a link to some site that pointed out that Rare removed a link to some page when it updated its site. That shows its level of journalism. Game Informer's journalism seemed to have been at about the same level. They once wondered if Star Fox Adventures's graphics would cause the game to have a low frame rate - pure speculation! It was clear that they weren't reporting on so much as an E3 demo. They have a classic games section, which might sound good. They gave the NES version of Ikari Warriors an 8.5. I'll let that speak for itself. I think anyone who could bring videogaming journalism to a credible level would deserve the Pulitzer Prize. I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

Re: I LOVE FO! I've thought about resubscribing to Game Informer again, actually. I always enjoyed reading it. Not really for game scores, as you can find that anywhere on the internet. But just for screenshots and general game news. And I figured I might as well get a magazine I enjoyed before instead of trying something totally different. |

Re: EGM I pretty much can't stand any new gaming magazines, but it's mostly because I'm a throwback from an older era. Nintendo Power, during the NES-SNES era, wasn't something you read because it had great journalism or good game reviews - you read it because it was just so damn fun to read! And I loved all the artwork that was in them. A lot of that art greatly influenced my own drawing style. Nowadays, gaming magazines are all about attitude and have very little artwork, and most of it is crappy CG and polygonal stuff. Crawl and 1000 ![]()

Re: I LOVE FO! Well I don't know... I guess I might consider EGM as well. Everything has it's flaws, I guess. I just miss the feeling of sitting down on the couch and flipping through the pages of an actual magazine. Going to review sites online just isn't the same, especially in this era of pay sites. And accessing screenshots online usually takes a long time in any case. |
