Eating problem...
I can't get my daughter to chew her food enough, especially when she is very hungry. She gets the hiccups and vomits whatever she ate.

Re: Eating problem...
I have had this problem with both the elderly I worked with and mikayla. First, not knowing tammys limit of understanding, would he be possible to feed her things like mashed potatoes and "cream of" soups for the time being? With Mikayla, I cut her food into small pieces (and mine too so she just thought well thats just how small the food is) and gave her smaller portions at a time. She was 3 or 4 when this was going on so tammy may have a little more understanding. On days this didnt work (really hungry days) we did the chew chew game (or train game )
Whoever chewed the most won!! I would count her bites and her mine ( 1 2 3 eleventy 85 60) When she got to 30... she was proclaimed winner of the round!!! silly i know but it did work
And try to rember this, her dr told me a person rarely vomits everything on their stomach. normally with reactionary vomitting only about a quarter of what goes in comes out, so try not to stress over it sweety
I hope this helped a bit, keep us posted, we can brainstorm and figure a way around this together love

Re: Eating problem...
Thanks
The chew chew game is not silly at all, but Tammy doesn't understand the concept of counting. She may understand what chew means, I've been saying it enough over the years..and showing her how I chew..
I will just have to stick to the small stuff. Her dad taught her to be a meatlover, burgers are her favorite, but she almost always vomits after those. From 4 to 7 the other night I spent cleaning up after her vomiting every little while*sigh*.
This just started a little over a year ago, she started eating binges after being on Depo-pavera(trying to stop the excess amount of siezures during her period, by her not having a period, didn't work, excess water weight caused her to have even more).
Soup over rice for supper tonight.

Awww sweety
Ill meditate on it tonight, i KNOW there are tricks to use as we used them often with alzheimers patients who would forget to chew. one i rember off hand is making them interested in how neat their jaws felt when they chewed "wanna feel something cool?" then place their hands on they jaws where the joints are and have them chew.
Like I said ill meditate on in and see if i can come up with a list, most will most probably NOT work, but maybe 1 may???
Your such an inspiration Vicky... I feel a short story forming about you... I need to get it down. You so totally rock...ya know that?

If she likes burgers but vomits after them,it could be an intolerance to the grease. You might want to try veggie burgers, like Gardenburgers. They're a little more soft textured, too, which may encourage her to chew longer.

Re: Eating problem...
Not much i could add to all this good advice Astara, but know that i am thinking of you, and hope this resolves itself soon. I think you are right to stick to the soft stuff like soup and rice, and anything soft textured - does she like pasta? My kids love it when they are feeling ill - even with no appetite, they can manage it, as they find it so easy to eat, just the right amount of chewing etc! Good luck

Re: Eating problem...
I'll try the garden burgers, thanks Shad!!
Good idea Twaddle, I'll fix pasta more often for her, thanks!
A story about me Gaia...
I hadn't realized how much our eating habits had gotten to be more to her dad's liking than how they were when it was just Tammy and I, we all lived together for the past 5 years...give or take a year or two. Divorced him 14 years ago.
