FAQ: The Space City Division, G.I. Joe Collectors' Club
The Space City Division, G.I. Joe Collectors' Club was
co-founded in 1999 by a father and his then 7-year old son. It is the local Houston chapter of the international G.I. Joe Collector's Club.
The Space City Division is the host of The Great Texas
G.I. Joe Show, which in 2005 will be held Sunday, October 23 at the Nassau Bay Hilton Hotel on NASA Road 1. This will be a 1-day show held on Sunday only.
The members of the Division are collectors, customizers, diorama builders and retailers of (primarily) 1/6th-scale action figures. Our members include retired and reserve military, active duty FBI, HPD and Harris County Sheriff's Department. One of our members proudly leads the Texas Semper Fi Society. Our membership includes adults and youths, with five father/son, father/daughter participants. The Division is the home of the three-time national award winning Diorama Team.
The Division typically meets on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Meeting dates vary to avoid conflicting with Mother's Day.
The Space City Division maintains an online presence at this website, "Space City Joes." This is the online newsletter of the Division where you can find photos of events and members' custom work, intel on local store sales and hard-to-find items, plus links to other G.I. Joe sites and much more.
Membership in The Space City Division is open to all. Annual dues are $20 for individuals and $25 for families. Membership inquiries may be made at Space City Joes, by telephone at 713/750-0003, or by visiting Voyager Toys in Houston.
The Division maintains a lively calendar of events and activities that include the following:
Competitive Diorama
The Space City Division competes in the 1/6th-scale diorama contest held annually as part of the International Hasbro G.I. Joe Collectors' Club Convention. The Division won the trophy an unprecedented three times in a row, in 2000, 2001 and 2002. This year's convention and competition were held in June at the Marriott City Center Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The convention will marked the 41st anniversary of G.I. Joe.
Custom Figure Contest
Usually held in conjunction with the Division Christmas Party, this event features the custom creations of the members. Recognition includes trophies and ribbons for the winners.
Community Service
In December 2003, the Division (with the considerable help of Pack 55 Cub Scouts) inventoried and packed for shipment 1,000 lbs. of personal hygiene items as a Christmas present to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 502 Inf. Regt., 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) in Mosul, Iraq.
Launch-a-Dude
L-a-D is the Division's 1/6th-scale parachute competition. Joe knows skydiving! Prizes are awarded for highest un-aided throw, closest landing to the target on the ground, and the beauty contest (for those sissy, museum-quality fallschirmjagers).
PX
The "PX" is the Space City Division's swap meet; an opportunity to buy, sell and trade 1/6th-scale items and other related G.I. Joe items. Tables for vendors are $10.00. Entry fee for members: $0.50. Non-members: $1.00. The PX is the brain-child of member Paul Gee, who usually chairs the event.
R/C Tank Rodeo
The "R/C Tank Rodeo" is the Division's 1/6th-Scale Radio Controlled Tank event, featuring an obstacle course for tracked and wheeled vehicles, and a beauty contest. Held every other month, participants build up points earned throughout the year to determine the annual Champion. Only 1/6th-scale vehicles are permitted to compete. The 2004
champion was 12 years old.
Speakers Series
The Division has been fortunate to have a series of highly interesting and entertaining speakers whose presentations covered anti-terrorism, national defense, and first-hand combat experiences. Prominent among these was Medal of Honor winner, retired Marine Col. and author Wes Fox. The Division is opportunistic when it comes to scheduling speakers, and it is often not possible to announce speakers very far in advance.
Military Museum Open House
The Division has participated as an exhibitor in the Military Museum of Texas' Open House held at the Museum's vehicle collection hangar at Westside Airport in Houston during 2002 and 2003. Participation in the Open House has made it possible to expose the 1/6th collecting hobby to a wider audience that appreciates military history.
Now that the Military Museum of Texas has moved to spacious new quarters at 8611 Wallisville Road in Houston, the Division will be displaying several of its national championship dioramas at the Museum.
