The Federation Riding for the Disabled International was founded in 1980 to form worldwide links between countries and centers offering therapeutic riding and driving, and to assist in the development of programs in new areas of the world.
FRDI offers education information by maintaining an International Bibliography, and International Directory of Education and Training, and by sponsoring on International Congress every three years. Regional Congresses are held on alternate years. FRDI offers an annual Scientific & Educational Journal of Therapeutic Riding and plans translation services to allow international sharing of resources.
The FRDI is actively involved in establishing international standards of safety and competency in instruction, and in encouraging high standards of protection and training of horses for therapeutic purposes. The organization serves in liaison with the International Paralympic Equestrian Committee (IPEC) for the promotion of equestrian sport for riders with disabilities.
Driving for the disabled is an alternative. It provides a suitable avenue to allow outdoor learning and recreation pursuits for the handicapped persons enabling them to participate in a sport & leisure activity. World championships were held in 1998 and National events are held in many countries.
