Finding your Magical Name
Although finding your magical name is by no mean a necessity and is nothing to stress over. Names like familiars have a way of finding magical people. When the right name for you comes along you will know it. I thought it might be nice to compile a list. It is always a good idea to research any name that appeals to you, learn its history and meaning. Look through the lists maybe one will jump out at you, maybe two or three. Overall be creative in making your choice. And be sure that what you choose has magical meaning to you. That's the most important thing, Blessings to all.....

First off..... why have one at all......?
Several reasons...for one thing..
it takes you out of the mundane day to day world,..
just as donning robes or lighting candles.. etc. does..
for rite and ritual....
For some it is a nom clamautre..
to hide their real name...at gatherings...
Or on the web.....
I don't much approve of that,
but I can see why some might do it
For yet others it becomes their day to day identity,
supplanting their birth name...as a dedication to the gods
For others, the why ,is because they are called to a new life
and need a new name to do it..
I like this last one and the first one myself....My magick name was given me by my Coven leader ,
who channeled it ,from my Patron Goddess

From that day to now..
I am Esta... I am also StarWind
It also changed my life..
Now think of that name for a second and what images of personality does it bring to mind...?

There are many schools of thought on the subject
There are those who feel our magick name
should only be shared with coven members..
There are those.. like me..who feel it's as much a part of who
you are, as anything else..and therefore needs to be shared
with all it matters to..note on the word Matters..
it's not a nick name.. 
There are those who feel the name
Must be given you by someone else..,Those who think its fine
to choose your own name, and so on and so on.. the list is rather long...To me, anyway that makes it clear to you..
is the right way..
I feel this way, if you are to have a name
you will be told how to keep it too.. if it's to be shared, that will be apparent..For myself I feel that sharing it ,
is much the same as sharing my title of Reverend...
Which I don't put in front of my name unless it's relavant..even thou I could...for things like signing a marriage lic.,sure of course... but not just anywhere
In fact through I use my Magickal name more than most...
I post it all over the place..But again where it is relevant to do so....On rites, on prayers to the Goddess...
on BBs where magick is the name of the game..
Like my art site.. or this my personal site..
You cannot read either one of these, without learning my name..
I have come under some censure for that..
and I don't really care....to each their own say I....
Everyone must make a personal choice on the matter..
it's part of the responsibly for having such a name
is the choice to use it wisely..
As its not just a new moniker...you get to use.. it's a part of you.. of your life of your dedication to the Gods..
and carry's its own weight of responsibility
so consider this well ..when choosing a name..
it's much more than a string of letters

My search for my magickal name has been a process that is for sure lol, I have used several names on line thinking I have come up with mine but I havent yet I used to get discouraged but now I know that it will come to me when it is time. maybe in a dream or maybe a dear friend will bestow it upon me but whatever way it happens at least I have developed some patience. lol

I would love to find my majickal name.I know it's out there,waiting to find its way to me,but for the right time,and place.
One of the things that I find interesting,is that both of my daughters are named for witches,one fictional,one not.My oldests middle name is Angelique,from the fictional character in the 60's Gothic drama,Dark Shadows.My 8 year old,we named B'Elanna Rhiannon.B'Elanna being the Klingon spelling of a name which was actually the name of a Greek warrior goddess-Bellonna,and Rhiannon,we found to be the name of a witch goddess,(as well as the Fleetwood Mac song).The interesting part is,the one named for the fictional character,is the one I have all the problems with.B'Elanna,on the other hand,has shown an intense interest in learning how energy works,nature,herbs,and mythology.
It's just one of those things that makes me go "Hmmmmmm?"Could I have somehow inadvertantly influenced this in naming them the way I did?

mmmmmmmm Ones name be it magical or mudane does have infulance on how one thinks and behaves.. just by the feng shui of how it sounds if nothing else.. like my brith name
is Esther....which i never could stand... now spell it differantly
of Esta.. and it is pronouced diffearntly .. it also means a whole nother thing in rune speak....

Oh,Esta,I would love to have a rune reding done for thier names.Just promise me you'll do it when you have the time,and not interrupt something for it,ok?
The oldest is Raichelle Angelique,and the 8 year old is B'Elanna Rhiannon.(If you ever find yourself bedridden,and bored to tears with a week or so on your hands,you could tackle my youngests name- Duncan Raphael Phelan Carver ,and that does NOT include his last name )Sorry,I couldnt resist throwing that one at ya for the fun of it.All I know about that name,as far as meaning goes,is that Duncan means "dark warrior"and Phelan is Celtic for "wolf".

I have a jacob carl richard steven (last name not included) and a Thalia elizabeth leann nicole!!! My oldest 2 are paul samuel lyn and christine rae michelle! Im tonya lynn rene mikayla and paul are the only 2 in our family with the normal amount of names
I gave the most thought to naming Thalia....by then i was beyond caring about who would get there names tagged to my child. I did name her after my twin and her 2 daughters (wilma elizabeth megan leann selena nicole) because the are 3 very strong loving women with special qualities all their own. I settled on Thalia because she was the greek muse of comedy. The name means "Joyfull and blooming" and "bringer of smiles and laughter" and she is all of these things. My thinking was ya get to ur 5th child you better have a sense of humor so I honored the one who gave me said humor
Id really like to change my name...i dont like it it dosent seem to fit me if that makes sense.

I love all the names you guys have given your children, they're so pretty and unusual. Reminds me of the difficult time i had choosing names for my kids that both me and their dad liked! There were lots that i loved but that we did'nt use in the end - i should have had lots more kids! I always seemed to 'know' tho - even as a child - that my firstborn would be a boy and that he would be called Christopher.
I know what you mean about not feeling that your name 'fits' you gaia, i have often felt that way about mine.
I am particularly drawn to the name Alluvia in the list, even tho' it is listed as an earth name, and as a cancerian i am a water sign!

twaddle, i think your name is beautiful! (not twaddle, deborah) ! Just jerking your chain - that's my name too. But i do like the name as long as no one shortens it to "debbie"......"deb" is okay too.
strangely enough, i feel like i have already found my magical name, but it isn't on that list......and that is the name i go by on the forums - "narshaadha" does this sound reasonable?

Sure it does...Nash.... however you come by it is legit..
oh babe re the kids names.. to do a rune read what I need is the name (first name is all ) they are called by.....if its a shortend pet name then that.. that name is thier current Identity...the mokier you gave them at brith is their potencial for life.... I can do both when I get a min....but what I really need for a proper rune read is what are they called on a day to day basis

Ok,here goes,
Raichelle goes by that(well,she doesnt go by That,she goes by Raichelle  ).
B'Elanna goes by both B'Elanna and Beanie(she was our beanie baby),equally.
Wow,come to think of it,all my kids go by thier names,pretty much.Duncan answers to both Duncan and Badger(thanks to his Aunt Hillclimber),equally,too.
It just occurred to me that none of these guys have shortened names,or anything like that.I'm the only one in the family with a shortened name.Wow.Far out.

What a cool thread! I like this! Esta,if you find a continuation in the boredom, here's mine: If you go by what we're called on a daily basis, you'll have to do "Mom" for me. Bwahaha, just a little humor there (I know, VERYlittle). I know mine has always had something to do with the laurel tree, but I'm sure you'll find something different with a rune read. Mine's Lauren. Now, to the pet peeve part: After almost 14 freakin' years of marriage, hubby dear still can't say my name right!! Yep, he's ate up with redneck...he couldn't say Lauren if his life depended on it! I've even cut it down syllable by syllable and to him it's Loren. This really pisses me off, since Loren is a male name! Of course, I give him grief over it periodically. The result is, he seldom calls me anything but "Babe." Go figure.
It would be interesting to get a read on my kids' names, just to see how they fit. They're Jaime, Daniel, and Jessica (but she goes by Jess...she HATES to be called Jessica).

My magickal name "Astara" just popped into my head as I was registering at my first forum, it sure does feel right to me though....and it does take me out of the mundane(as Esta says) it "feels" magickal to me.
I have never done a Rune reading with a name...could you please do one for me Esta?

eheheheh sounds like I need to start a rune thread eheheh
but can do.. takeing down all the names and will get back to ya on em.. a rune name reading is part literaly.. IE what the letters themselves mean as most of the english letters translate one on one to rumic.. no suprize as thats where we GOT most of them to start with in fact serveral of them have not even changed how they look from then to now.......and part intiutiona reading itself... based on what all those letters mean in relation to each other...
so will get back to yas on it

You know,great minds really do think alike.I was thinking a rune thread would be so incredible.We could all learn more about it that way,too.I've always had a fascination with runes,but for some reason was just never able to retain anything I learned about them.Probably because all I had to work with was a single book I found at the library,that was boring as hell.

well the rune thread is growing well....I LOVE IT!!!!!!!! Esta mom told you my real name but ALL my friends call me Iris and sometimes I forget to answer to Jaime. ( LOL i always hated that name) My goddaughter calls me aunt Storm she doesnt even know my real name and I still answer to that as well. I want a reading too....on me and the kids if you have time one day please...

Thanks for this post ladies!
Having read and commented on a question in UB, I thought I'd come to this section of CotEaS. It'll take me a little while to read through all the posts but I feel it will be worth it.
I studied Wicca for quite awhile, but ended up leaving the group I was with. In my heart I know I need to continue with my studies as I feel I've just drifted since I stopped. My love for the Earth has continued and the way I live my life (Pagan) yet I felt I still haven't been true to myself.
Having read this post, I'm not sure if I'll open myself to finding a magikal name (yet), but you have given me some food for thought.
