Fission
Fission (1)

It was the marriage of two small simmering
Pieces of uranium, one fired with terminal
Ferocity into the ever-ready critical
Mass of the other, finely balanced to
Receive the bullet.

It was the massive hug of curvaceous
Explosive on a small ball of playful
Plutonium, suddenly-confused neutrons…

It was the chain that, bang on time,
Started reacting, once ignited,
Unquenchable.

Our love was the energy which would
Sweep aside two cities,
Whole populations feeling its effect.

And it was all over in seconds.

I'm not sure yet if I'm gonna go into greater (sub-atomic) detail about the physics of it. Will elaborating it into something twice as long double the impact of the last line, or halve it? Your thoughts, please...

Re: Fission
I quite like it as it is CCV, nice approach - have you read The Periodic Table by Primo Levi? I'd recommend it, dead cheap on Penguin books too ;)

...that said, you never know what more will bring to the whole...

Re: Fission
I love the way this works, but I think your instincts are right - I wanted to keep reading. I think you could work wonders with the physics and metaphor - there's a lot there. And hey, if it doesn't work, you can always edit it back out.
