Jennifer,
I had a blighted ovum too. I am still waiting to see if it will pass so I have not had a d&c at this time but my dr did say if I do have one I will have a local. I some who have had a general. Hope this helps and I am sure more people will give you more personal experiences.

Re: d&c
I had a local. I am not going to lie to you, it did hurt and I had some pretty bad cramping afterwards, but it was over real quick, in about one minute. I think that the worst part was that I was so very upset and that made the anesthesia less effective. The doctor did allow my dh in the room with me though so that calmed me down somewhat. If you have the choice between local and general, I would pick general if I ever had to go through something like that again, God forbid!! I am so very sorry for your loss and pleas know that we are here for you anytime.

Re: d&c
i actually had a D&C done on Tues of this week. My doctor put me completely under. I have ahad locals during procedures before and do not care AT ALL to hear what is going on around me during any kind of surgery. But thankfully I didn't have to decide, my doctor did it for me. I am currently just taking it easy per orders. I had a blighted ovum too. I did go home the same day, and they sent me home with pain meds, but I haven't had any bad pain. Just tenderness, and some light cramping today. I had more pain before hand actually, that after. Good luck to you.

re:d&C
i had general anethetic.
they gave me the choice between an epi, or general, i chose for general.
the only part that i didn't like about it was then giving me alkaseltzer...it's realllly concentrated and taste like the worst thing imaginable, but i'm thankful i drank it because i felt fine when i woke up. they'll also give you pepcid to help as well...
Re: re:d&C
I would say go under like I did. The last thing I remember was my doctor holding my hand and then I woke up in the recovery room. I couldn't have handled it any other way. We are all different so make the decision you need to for yourself. I hate that you even have to think about this stuff right now!

Re: For those who've had a D&C
I was put completely under also. It was a terrible time for me anyways, and I don't think I could have handled knowing what was happening to me. It was over very quickly, about 15 minutes, and my husband was there when I woke up. Of course it is your decision; have you talked to your doctor about what he recommends? My doctor said that as long as I was healthy, going under should have no more risk then a local. As Marie said, it is so terrible that you have to go through this on top of everything else .
Re: For those who've had a D&C
My 2 D&C experiences were much like Marie's - I was laying under a blanket with my doctor smiling at me telling me that this is a peice of cake, then I woke up again under a cozy blanket to my husband rubbing my head.
I remember nothing in between and felt nothing.
Slight cramping afterwards for a couple of days was it!
Good Luck and I'm sorry you have to go through this....I definately hope your experience (since you have to have one) is like mine!

Re: For those who've had a D&C
I guess I'm the minority voice, I really wanted to have a local rather than the general. My past experience with procedures was that I was incredibly groggy and just sub-par mentally for days after general anesthetic. Also, it was easier to schedule b/c it was in the doctor's office whereas with the general it would have been in the hospital.
Having a D&C with local did hurt some, mostly when they gave the anesthetic shot. I felt some pressure that edged up on pain but was tolerable. My doctor was very nice about talking about what she was doing so that I wouldn't be startled. She also was very reassuring to DH and protected us both from seeing or hearing what was going on. I took a long nap at home after and was pretty much back to normal physically the next day except for some minor cramping.
As everyone said, it is such a personal thing what will work best for you. It is tough having to make this choice on top of everything else but at the same time it is empowering that your doctor doesn't just decide for you but instead let's you decide.
Re: For those who've had a D&C
For both my D&E's and D&C I had local anesthetic but I was heavily sedated. With Anna's D&E I remeber much more than with James' D&E and then D&C. I think I wasn't sedated as much with Anna. I can remeber the feeling of her passing through the birth canal but it was not painful. With the D&C I remeber them freezing my cervix wich hurt a little when the needle went in.

D&C????Hi thereMy name is DeLinda, and I have to say am amazed to find that you had the exact same thing that I did with the blighted ovum. It happened to me almost two weeks ago, and it was the very first time I'd ever heard of this at all. I did have a D&C, and actually felt better afterwards as was hurting so bad beforehand. I did have general anesthetic, so didn't know anything was going on, which to me was a relief after the stress that I'd been under with worry.
First let me say how SORRY I am that you're going through this, but you aren't alone. I didn't have a blighted ovum, I had a non progressive miscarriage and I firmly requested that I be completely OUT for the surgery. My doctor recommended it and I believe him...he said certain "memories" tended to bother some and I knew they'd bother me so I requested the full meal deal...they even gave me something for nausea! That was me though. I know some may feel better having the local but I'm glad w/ what I got.
Best wishes doll and UNfortunately, welcome to the board.
Lots of love, Elyse
