Garlic
Anybody wanna talk about garlic? I just planted some for the first time. A friend gave me a few bundles because he's moving and will have to skip a year. I am to care for his crop by planting it at my place, and give him some of the harvest next fall so he can start again. It's a medium flavored German cultivar, acclimated to my area for 3 years.

So I've four 20 ft. "voluptuous bed" rows with little cloves nestled in. Planted them with the moon in Cancer, 3rd quarter. They're heavy feeders who like dry feet, so the earth is full of compost & manure and piled high. The cloves are covered enough so the roots can start to grow before the snow but the shoots won't peep up above the surface and freeze. I hope they will be happy here.

While planting, they talked to me of separation and oneness, of regeneration, of the life cycle. I loved kneeling in the dirt at dusk, breaking open bulbs, the rustling paper coverings scattering in the wind, the pungent smell, tucking them into their beds, one by one.

Plant half - eat & gift half. Sustainable, healthy, yummy. And the stalks with seed heads decorate my parlor.

Re: Garlic
I have never tried to grow garlic before. The other day when I got a clove out of the fridge to use in a recipe, it had gotten little roots on it. Could I have just planted that and it would have grown? It only had one layer of the white-ish dry skin over it.

Re: Garlic
hi ya all
this is what I have on garlic

GARLIC: (Allium sativum)

Garlic has a clustered bulb made up of several bulblets (cloves) enclosed in a papery tunic. It has a single stem with long, thin leaves and an umbel of edible, rose-tinted white summer flowers and a bulb whose flavor increases the more it is sliced or crushed.

Cooking with fresh ginger prevents the slight nausea some experience with Garlic. Garlic repels insects and can be applied to their bites and stings. The cloves add flavor to savory dishes, especially in hot countries where the plants develop the best flavor.

Garlic purifies the blood, helps control acne, and reduces blood pressure, cholesterol, and clotting. Tests confirm antibiotic activity against samples of Candida, cholera, staphylococcus, salmonella, dysentery, and typhus: and a mild antifungal action. Garlic clears phlegm, thus providing treatment for colds, bronchitis, pulmonary tuberculosis, and whooping cough.

New tests suggest it has a role in treating lead poisoning, some carcinomas and diabetes.

It's said that growing garlic around potatoes reduces potato blight. The garlic bulb is one of the great herbal "polycrests" - herbs of many uses. Fresh garlic is a preventative and a cure for intestinal worms. It is generally taken in one-teaspoon doses, three to six times a day, with some grated fresh ginger root.

Garlic is a natural antibiotic for internal and external use. Mash it and use as a wound dressing. For a sore throat, lightly roast unpeeled cloves in a dry frying pan, peel them when they grow soft, and eat them. For pinworms, a slightly smashed fresh clove can be Inserted into the rectum with olive oil. For vaginal infections, smash a few cloves and wrap them in cheese cloth. Insert directly into the vagina. Fresh raw garlic is more effective than the powdered and extracted forms available for sale. Garlic has been shown to be more effective than tetracycline as an antibiotic.

CAUTION: Pregnant women should avoid overuse of garlic.

Parts Used: Bulb

Magical Uses: In the home, braids of garlic guard against evil, repel thieves, and turn away the envious. And of course, garlic protects against vampires. It is a very effective blessing for a new home.

Garlic was eaten on festival days to Hecate and was left at a crossroads as a sacrifice in Her name. Garlic was once worn to guard against the plague. It is still used to absorb diseases.

Simply rub fresh, peeled cloves of garlic onto the afflicted part of the body then throw into running water. An old spell utilized garlic in protecting against hepatitis. To do this, simply wear thirteen cloves of garlic at the end of a cord around the neck for thirteen days. On the last day, in the middle of the night, walk to a corner of an intersection of two streets, remove the necklace, throw it behind you and run home without looking back Garlic is also extremely protective. Sailors carry some while on board ship to protect against its wrecking. Soldiers wore garlic as a defense in the middle ages, while Roman soldiers ate it to give them courage. Worn, garlic guards against foul weather (mountaineers wear it) as well as monsters, and it also shields you from the blows of your enemies.

When evil spirits are about, bite into garlic to send them away, or sprinkle powdered garlic on the floor (if you don't mind smelling it for some time.)

Garlic is placed beneath children's pillows to protect them while asleep, and brides once carried a clove of garlic in the pocket for good luck and to keep evil far from her on her big day. Rubbed onto pots and pans before cooking, it removes negative vibrations which might otherwise contaminate the food.

When eaten, garlic acts as a lust-inducer, and when a magnet or lodestone is rubbed with garlic it loses its magical powers.

G/P/E: Masculine, Mars, Fire.

Magical attributes: Protection, healing, good weather, courage, exorcism.

Uses: Lowers tension, ease colds, and improve circulation. Garlic vinegar can be used to disinfect wounds and soothe rheumatic pain and any common pain (made from one liter of vinegar and ten cloves of crushed garlic steeped for at least 10 days). Shrinks warts, relieves pain from teeth and earaches. Good for high and low blood pressure and removing parasites and infections. To ease the pain of aching joints, a toothache or an earache, place a crushed raw bulb of garlic on a piece of gauze and place over the area of pain. For joints, try using garlic paste. Antibiotic, protection, warding off evil

Sacred to Hecate. Use the flowers as an altar offering and the cloves for protection.

Garlic, known by its Latin name of Allium sativum, a part of the Lily family, may very well be one of Mother Nature's great gifts to man. While it is legendary for warding off those odd little human-like vampires of legend and myth, it has many great practical and proven uses in natural medicine. Garlic is mentioned in ancient medical papyri from Egypt as being utilized as medicine. It is written that workers building the pyramids were given garlic each day to help increase their vitality. It is mentioned in ancient Greek and Roman medical texts for a variety of afflictions, including uterine tumors, and wild garlic was used in the United States by various Native American tribes to treat many different ailments. Chinese medicine also shows a long history of use of this powerful herb. Ayurvedic medicine has a place for garlic as a healer as well, dating back at least to ancient Indian manuscripts, for a variety of uses including abdominal tumors.

Medicinal Uses of Garlic Garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic. It has been shown to stimulate cell growth and activity. It reduces blood pressure in hypertension, and is useful in lowering cholesterol, while at the same time raising the beneficial cholesterol, HDL. A main advantage to using garlic for its antibiotic properties is that it does not destroy the body's natural intestinal bacteria. It is excellent for use in all colds and infections of the body. It is being studied as a possible cancer prevention agent. Garlic protects the liver, kills worms and parasites internally and externally, reduces blood clotting, and provides antioxidant protection to cells. When ingesting the raw cloves, a sprig of parsley chewed immediately after will freshen the breath. Garlic oil is often used to treat earaches and ear infections, especially for infants and children, and topically will clear up various skin problems and infections. It was used as a field wound dressing in World War I. Garlic has also been shown to be an effective treatment for Candida and other fungal infections, such as athlete's foot. The main active constituent in garlic, allicin, is destroyed when heated, and is only released from the clove when crushed or bruised. So for most treatments, garlic needs to be consumed raw and crushed. The cooked form is useful also, as it provides the body with a source of Sulphur that is much needed for a healthy body, as well as for healthy hair. Garlic is also an important source of selenium. There are at least 9 anti-coagulative constituents within a bulb of this treasure. Garlic has been shown to protect the liver from the actions of acetaminophen, as well as other liver-affecting drugs. It has also been shown to be able to rid the body of heavy metal concentrations, such as mercury from fish consumption. Its cousins, the various onions, have many of these same medicinal properties, but not as concentrated, and are not as powerful nor as wide in scope as garlic.

Parts used: bulb

Actions: antibiotic, antiviral, parasiticide, expectorant, carminative, digestive, alterative, diuretic, stimulant, tonic, anti-microbial, diaphoretic, cholagogue, hypotensive, anti-spasmodic, anti-oxidant, anti-fungal

Those using blood-thinning drugs should consult with their doctor before utilizing therapeutic sized dosages of garlic, as garlic may compound the effects of these types of drugs. It is safe to use garlic medicinally while pregnant and while nursing, in moderate amounts.

Spiritual Uses of Garlic Peeled garlic cloves placed in each room is said to ward off disease. The whole bulb is hung in new homes to dispel negativity and evil and evil spirits. It is a strong protective herb. A clove of garlic placed under the pillow of sleeping children is believed to protect them. Roman soldiers believed that garlic gave them courage. Dreams of eating garlic means that you will uncover secrets. Dreams of garlic in the house brings luck. Garlic is mentioned in the Bible as being used by the Hebrews following Moses, and it was reportedly used by those same peoples to increase and maintain virility. Dioscordes, the Greek doctor who worked with the Roman army, notated garlic as a holy herb, and it was used in purification ceremonies in the temples of that time. Early travelers across the Rocky Mountains in the United States put garlic into the nostrils of their horses and mules to prevent them from collapsing due to lack of oxygen. Explorers in the mountains of South America chewed wild garlic to relieve altitude sickness.

Growing Garlic Garlic is a perennial herb that likes moderate soil and lots of sun and warmth. The plant grows to 2 feet tall. The bulb is the most common used portion, although the greens are often used in salads. Plant it along with your roses to deter pests from the roots. The bulbs are usually dug in the fall in most climates, allowed to dry, and stored. Individual cloves can be used to start new garlic plants.
