Good Old and Faithful Percheron
Hi all,

I just had to share my first horse show experience with you all. Just a refresher, my name is Sandi and I am a RAKA since I lost my leg to childhood cancer 34 yrs ago.
I just started riding at a theraputic riding center last December. I ride a 16 yr old percheron and have recently been riding a 4 yr old spotted draft.
Today was our anual horse show. I am truly a believer now that these horses know what it is all about. Kelly, the 16 yr old percheron is normally a very SLOW horse. When she trots she will only go so far........... and that's it. She will try to cut corners in the arena and so on and so on .......
Well today she was a totally different animal. After spending about 2 hours in the barn talking to her and feeding her a carrot or two... Ok maybe a few more, it was time for us to show. It was just me and 9 other riders in my class. I was a bit nervous. Not to be on a horse but that I had only ridden her lately (last week) since I had been riding the spotted draft. I was afraid because it would be quite embarrassing to be in front of all of these people only to have a slow, pokey horse not seem to be listening etc. Well, worry no more. This was like a different horse. She didn't make one mistake. ( I'm sure I did). then came the trot. Oh boy was I nervous! Normall Kelly will just try to fake it and start the motion then by the time she gets going it's time to quit. Well not today, when I gave her the verbal cue to trot she did so without hesitation, And she trotted the whole length of the arena !!!
So now that I know what this horse can do she better look out the next time I ride her !!!! LOL
I truly believe she was showing off, It was unbelievable !
I had so much fun ! It was great. So what that I came in 6th place out of 10. It's a start ! Kelly and I were the last horse and rider in the relay race and again she kept going, allowing our team to win ! For that we all got our trophies !! I proudly have it on top of my TV set.
Most of the other riders were kids, but I have to say, I think I had more fun than any of them ! After all, I've had the dream of riding since I was a child and to finally do it is a dream come true !!!
It's never to late !!! And you're never to old ! ! Stiff and sore but never to old !!
