Greek Creation Myths
there are 2 popular Greek creation myths...

Hesiod's creation myth which is explained in detail in the Theogony
www.sacred-texts.com/cla/...eogony.htm

The Pelasgian creation myth (the alternate myth) that puts the goddess Eurynome as the ruler of the universe.
www.ferrum.edu/philosophy...eation.htm

I put both links up although you can easily find a copy of the Theogony at your local book store. I think it is interesting to note that in both myths the world is created by the earth-mother who breathes life into it. You will also notice something else, that in the Theogony, Eurynome has taken a lesser role. She is no longer the ruler and has been "demoted" if you will to a lesser titan and mother of the graces.

"and Eurynome, the daughter of Ocean, beautiful in form, bare him three fair-cheeked Charites (Graces), Aglaea, and Euphrosyne, and lovely Thaleia, from whose eyes as they glanced flowed love that unnerves the limbs: and beautiful is their glance beneath their brows"
- Theogony (ll. 907-911)

I found the pelasgian one interesting. And i would like to share my theory with all of you. Most of the information can be found on Robert Graves’ "The Greek Myths". The fact that she was exhalted and later demoted shows a sign of "Deus Otiosus" or "unemployed god". It might be a sign that once, the pelasgians worshipped her but during Hesiod's time she had no temples or worshippers and was merely mentioned out of respect and to fill the story of the current Olympians".

What does everyone think?

figurine
I forgot to include an interesting minoan figurine depicting a "snake goddess". The figure is on display at the Heraklion Museum in Crete. Eurynome was linked with snakes because of her relationship with Ophion.

It can be found here at the museum's website
