How is Shamanism different?
I always wondered that and I am curious. How is shamanism different from what Green witches, hedgeriders and wiccans do?

Re: How is Shamanism different?
The timing of your question is interesting as the ANUH community just had a speaker from a local coven to come explain the differences between Wicca, witch and pagan.

The way I have always understood the term pagan is as an umbrella of sorts for many different paths that are basically connected to earth. (I know, that is a very simply way to look at it.) However, by that definition, as a Huna Shaman, I am a pagan. As would Native American beliefs, as would a Wiccan, etc.

Webster’s defines a Shaman as:: “a priest or priestess who uses magic for the purpose of curing the sick, divining the hidden, and controlling events.” (BLECH!!)

I have always understood a Shaman to be someone who trains in healing modalities, then dedicated his or her life to helping people.

Ever single culture has the equivalent to a Shaman and each has different beliefs on how someone becomes one. In some cultures, you have to born in the right family. In others, you have to have a ritual death and re-birth. Shaman’s go by many names as a Native American Medicine man, for ewxample, would be, by definition, a shaman.

All do a form of energy work, called by many different names. Generally all are teachers and healers. It is also very common for shamans to do journey work, meaning going into the “other side” (or whatever term the culture uses) on behalf of their “client.” But to say a Shaman is “this” and nothing else would be erroneous.

Anyway, in listening to this speaker, I came to realize that the main difference between Wicca and Huna shamanism, for instance, is the worship of deities. In Huna we don’t worship any deity and instead focus on working with our higher self. “Aumakua.” As for our God, the human race has an Aumakua, and “all that is”, has an Aumakua. (very simply explained.)

According to the speaker, after listing to the kind of work I do as a Huna Shaman, she said I would fall under her definition of a witch. In Huna, there are no witches… so it depends on the words you want to use. (actually she said I was more like a hedgwitch (I think that was what she said… But I saw you use the word “hedgeriders” which sounds sorta like what she said but I can’t find a definition) than a regular witch. implying I just get things done, don’t mess with casting and such.. (maybe you could clarify this point for me..)…

So the difference is the words we use and the rituals we practice and truly in little else.. Someone said.. “The devil is in the details..” LOL, works for me!! In love and light,

ALl good things,
Sky

Re: How is Shamanism different?
Yes your right, hedgerider is another term for hedgewitch. Some green witches choose this path but not all have the ability.

As a hedgerider, we scale the veil between life and death, and are able to call back spirits of those at the brink of the veil. A hedgerider in a simple sense, uses the spirit to heal the body more or less. The focus isnt so much on the diety as it is on the gifts and the spirit of those we seek to help. Im not sure how to explain what it is we do :lol but yes, it sounds very similar. Not all are cut out to be a hedgerider, and spirit seperation is a real threat. Most solitary green witches/ gaian choose the path of the hedgewitch. Im not sure why this is. But a hedgewitch can be of any tradition, as I understand it. Though they may celebrate certain ritual and sabbats they do not normally work with a coven. I think that being comfortable as a solitary is important.

I havent found much on hedgeriders or hedgewitches which ever you prefer. I think even among witches its a rare path. I hope his made sense:lol

Thank you both...that is a good start and brings about issues and subjects that I have never considered before. I have much to do before commenting much on this subject as I know practically nothing of it.

For me...there just has never been any question that I would be a healer of some sort, and that "knowing" has been with me since childhood. I'm entertaining the thought now, however, that I have either taken a misstep on my path, or am at the brink of something new, as the same "knowing" and confidence is not with me at this time.

Our grandmother was a healer, and I always assumed since childhood that I would follow her. I believe now, that the mantle might possibly have passed to Shadeaux. We will see where I am led from here. Or maybe I'm just on a spirit-imposed vacation...who knows?

Thanks again for getting this topic going.

Well,Glowbug;) ,the mantle may be passed to more than one,and I firmly believe it is within you.I also firmly believe that it comes from ancient spiritual knowledge. In other words,it's my belief that I have been a healer in past lives, and some of it has carried over into this one.Much of what I know, has never been learned,or taught to me.The knowledge of it just is.Like the tea I made for you,the recipe just came to me,it was not a conscious effort to figure out what to put in it.I just knew, and trusted this knowing.
I believe that is where your dilemma lies. You must learn to trust your inner knowledge completely, and not fear to act on it.You must also learn to allow yourself to feel inner peace.I know that under the circumstances you are in right now, that is not an easy task.In the best of circumstances it isnt easy. But you must be able to clear away many layers of negative thought, and emotional harm that has been done to you in order to let the shining core of your own inner self come through. Then, you will be able to draw on all the wonderful things within you to become the healer that you really are.:Akiss

Reading thru this with interest, lots of new-fangled terms I'm not familiar with (being old school or possibly merely old), but one phrase lept out at me:

"I have always understood a Shaman to be someone who trains in healing modalities, then dedicated his or her life to helping people"

My understanding is that healing is dedicated first to the planet and then to life forms inclusive of but not limited to humans.

My belief is that this is one and the same.. not exclusive of each other...

Must be an Old/New translation glitch. Thanks for clearing that up.

To treat the earth you must treat the appendages...rather like treating the blood to clear an infected wound... Well put sky, we are indeed intertwined
