How to make taper candles
I love to make my own candles, its fun and you can make as many different kinds as you can make up. Some time it doesn't always go the way you thought it would. Just ask HC about the jar candle we tried to make. ( it sunk in the middle real funny looking but we had fun doing it ) Well it was still cool to have something to do with my mom. I do however have a way to make taper candles thats easy and fun. Here's how:
first you need to get the stuff. Most craft shops will have everything you need as well as most food stores.
2 to 4 pounds of paraffin ( the kind that markets sell for use in canning) or beeswax
Thin candle wicking
candle dye ( a crayon will work)
A small bowl
A large pot and a smaller can ( a coffee can works well; the taller the can, the longer the taper. a tall thin can a bit longer than what you want your candle to be.)
baking soda ( for fire safety)
1 wooden spoon
wax paper
Step #1 grate or chop the wax into small pieces before melting. Fill the pot about 1/3 full and bring to a boil on high heat. Put the wax in the can and set in the pot. Turn the head to medium and watch the wax as it melts.
( Paraffin easily bursts into flames over high heat this is why it's used to make candles ) If flame appear place a lid on the can or drench the area with baking soda to put it out. If you keep the heat low you should not have a problem.
Step #2 Check the wax. It's best to have about 6 inches of wax if not then add more.( if the wax has melted but begun to harden the heat it to low, turn it up a bit )
Add a few chunks of candle dye to the wax and stir with a wooden spoon or take the paper off a crayon and break it into pieces. the dye will melt, stir until the wax is evenly colored. The candle will be a shade or two lighter than the melted wax so if you want dark colors add more dye.
Step #3 Begin to dip. Hold the wicking between your thumb and forefinger Dunk it into the wax, it will float on the top the first few times because the wick is light. After you dip the wick remove it and hold it in the air a min or two until the wax is set then dip again.
Dip again and make sure you pull the wick all the way out of the wax.always allow the wax to set before you re dip the candle or it will remelt and all you get is a wet wick (boo)
The longer you let the wax set before you dip it again the faster the candle will form. With proper dipping the candle will soon from. The bottom of the candle will get an inverted cone shape because of the way the wax drip down as it cools don't worry we'll fix it later.
Step #4 When the candle get the width you want it hang it in a spot where it won't be touched for several minutes. I hang it from the bottom of the cupboard door and shut the door.Test the candle in about 20 minutes or so. the wax should be set but still warm. Check it from time to time in that 20 or so minutes to make sure it hasn't hardened completely before the next step.
Step #5 Turn the heat off under the wax. spread the wax paper on the counter or table. Lay the candle on the wax paper and gently with an easy rocking motion, roll the candle back and forth on the paper. This will straighten the candle and reduce the irregularities on the surface.
Step #6 After the candle is fairly straight cut the cone off the bottom with a sharp knife. Dip the candle two more times in the wax and hang to dry till hard. There ya go !!!!
If you plan to make more than one candle at a time you will need a rack to dry them on. You don' want to try to hang more than one candle on the cupboard at a time because if you drop one it's not pretty.
You can make your spell candles the same way. Here's how:
Between Steps one and two mix the spices for your spell in a bowl. Empower them as you visualize your goal and infuse that goal into the herbs.
After step 2 Sprinkle the herbs into the wax with your projective hand and dust off your fingers over the pot and stir the herbs into the wax clockwise and visualize the goal for that candle.
If adding oil the wax add about 8 to 16 drops it should be heavily scented if not add more.
To use the spell candle choose a time when you are alone. Smell the rich scent off your candle and visualize your goal. hold the candle tightly between your palms. Send energy into it saying the words to the spell or the goal out loud. put it in a holder and light it. Sit or stand watching the flame turn the wax to liquid. Visualize the energy you placed in the candle being release and sense the candle sending out the power to bring your goal to life. Let the candle burn all the way down in a safe spot or allow it to burn for 4,8, or 16 minutes a day until your goal is done.
I have added some types of spell candles as well.
Always make sure you grind the herbs before you use them and only use real essential oils.

Re: How to make taper candles
COOL IRIS!! I used to make candles back when i had money! lol
You can also use the above melting method on near the pan while the wax melts take a milk carton cut of the tope....if its not waxed on the inside spray and coat it with cooking oil (i use pam)tie your wick to a nail, poke it threw the bottom a dab a little hot wax on the bottom outside to seal it. hold the wick taunt and slowly pour melted, colored and scented wax into the carton. to make a two color candle, pour the first layer wait until a nice firm surface has formed then add the second color/ layer. dont let it cool all the way or the lower level will shrink and the top color will run down the sides...you need that bottom layer still warm. after adding the top color wait for it to harden, when is firm but still hot, chek and see if u need to fill in the top indent around the wick but dont spill alot on ur wick! it will spark and spit alot if to much is on! Another thing u can do is add a little wax at a time waiting fdor it to thicken yet not harden and drop in rose petals, stones, sea shells, jut be carefull to do it far enough from the center they wont cuase a problem and close enough to the middle that you have nice smooth sides.
after it has cooled to warm, carfully peal apart the milk carton, remove and shape. remove the nail and add a washer and smooth the bottom.
VIOLA! square spell candle or nifty lil gift!!

Re: How to make taper candles
We used to make "lace"candles by using milk cartons as molds.Simply fill the carton with coarse crushed ice(chunky, with good sized chunks, not like you would use for an icee),and pour the melted wax over the ice.It will set quickly around the ice. When the candle is completely set, pour out what water you can,and peel away the carton(over the sink as more water will drain off).Your new candle should look quite a bit like swiss cheese, but trust me,they are very pretty, and when burned in a dark room, the light they give off is beatiful.
Also, just for something fun to do,if you like. While you have your melted wax in front of you, take a wire whip, and beat it for a little while. It gets all frothy, and you can coat other candles and make them look like they are covered in snow(if the wax is white). My daughter made me one of these at school once, and used the frothy wax to frame a picture of herself,on the side of a square candle, and covered the rest.It looks like a square snowball. It's still beautiful, after four years.

Re: How to make taper candles
Mom came up with a great idea for a candle that would look good on the counter. It's an orange one. Take the frozen oj container and wash it out. set wick with a washer. Make your wax orange and add orange oil to make it smell good. Fill oj container and after it has set just leave it like it is and there ya go an oj candle!!! I think it's cute idea but don't try to burn it because most frozen oj containers are cardboard.
( I love it!!!)

Re: How to make taper candles
Well, you're almost right, Iris. My idea was to use the oj container as the mold. Add a little orange oil to the wax as orange is invigorating and inspiring. After the wax is completely hardened, tear off the container, leaving a pretty orange candle to be decorated as you wish.

Re: How to make taper candles
I think it would be cool left in the container and put in the window above the sink or something. it would be cute. Looks like OJ and smells like it too. plus we reuse the containers and they dont get wasted. We can make some to burn and to look nice too.

Re: How to make taper candles
I used to have a recipe for a gel, flameless candle, itll take some searching but it may work...you get a bigger scent without the danger of flame...laurie thats a great recycling project...and you can take it another way too using frozen lemonade cartons and lemon oil almost any carton and scent can be used!
Also, with the square candles? try taking excess collored wax and dropping it into the carton, then covering it with transparent wax...its called a chunky candle and i find its a great way to use up lil bits n pieces of extra wax

Awwwwwww, Iris, Sweetie....don't you worry...I got a whole list of things for you to smell, when you're able to. And part of that is to go ahead and make those candles! It'll be fun, and when you can smell them, then we'll light them one at a time. It'll be fun!
Love you, sweetheart!

Re: How to make taper candles
Dip in the middle
they do that because the outside cools frist.... while the inside stays hotter
the soultion is kinda like you do for a cake if you it want to cook flat....( wrap the top with a damp rag while cooks it will not mound up..)
in candleing it means to have the whole thing cool a the same rate... I dont know how Gaia does and waiting to hear
but how I do it is make the candle itselt in layers...pouring and letting set only about an inch or so at a time till almost frim but not quite, with the containor in cold water to hurry the process... then pour more.. riseing the level of water to match....it takes some experinaments to get the timeing right but it avoids that dreaded chanal down the middle around the wick that any piller or jar candle tends to get....

Re: How to make taper candles
thats what i do as well....and if ur using a sturdy mold (metal or thick paper) you can set it inside a bowl of ice till it cools but make sure its still a bit tacky ...remove it and redo it again...anmd like esta said 1 inch to 1/2 inch is best...takes a while but results are worth it
