I got FF Tactics
Well, sort of. My parents got it for me as a gift. They offered to ship it here, but I opted to wait until I go home for Christmas to get it. The last thing I need is another game here. FF VIII took away enough time from school for this semester.

Cool. I hope you enjoy it. I myself enjoyed it quite a bit. It IS a time eater. I got the chance to beat it a few years ago, in the few weeks between when my summer internship ended and before school began. I believe i beat R-Types under similar conditions the year prior.

I just hope the disc is OK. I imagine that the situation would have been corrected after 2 months, but you never know how many bad discs are still floating around.

I was thinking about buying the game back, but I'm also somewhat concerned about getting a bad disc...

I hope it works for you. I didn't want to say anything before because I didn't want to jinx it.

For some recreation, I played FFT for about an hour last night.

I used a file that was relatively close to the beginning of the game (though I spent about 6 hours on it).

I ~probably~ started with 3 squires and 2 chemists... because that's what I always do. When my 3 squires mastered that job (which doesn't take very long) I made one into a monk and then I swapped the jobs of the 4 remaining characters.

Now, those 2 ex-chemists are close to mastering the squire job. I didn't "level build" (it's really more like job building in this game, as levels aren't as important) last night. I mostly just went after the story battles. But I might have to level build soon, because it takes so many job points to master the chemist job, and it's a fairly important job to have a lot of people master. I'm not totally sure which jobs I'll change my characters into next.

Anyway, I had fun playing it.

Yeah, I got FFt last night, and it is one kickin' game. I remembered what Crawl said and picked two chemists and three squires. Then I turned one of the chemists into a black mage.

I'm about 4 hours into FF Tactics so far. I've only uncovered 4 map points so far, as I've spent a lot of time running back and forth fightng random battles. I got annhiliated in the batte where there's black mages and archers.

I've been changing jobs a lot, which probably isn't a good idea. I might start over again, since I'm getting the hang of things, and I've made a few mistakes (or rater, I could have done things better).

As for classes, Knight seems like a good early choice. Archers are tough to get used to, because they are lousy up close. Black and White mages are useful in many situatons.

Anyway, I want to start again because I want to teach everyone the JP up skill. Also, I want to make job choises based on Brave and Faith stats, because I haven't been doing that.

You know, I've NEVER considered Brave and Faith stats. With those stats, the game just reached levels of complication I didn't want to deal with, and I dealt with it by ignoring the complexities. I don't think it had an adverse effect, but maybe I could have done better if I cared about those stats.

Well, I started over. My party is at about level 4. After getting everyone the JP up skill (and almost everyone the counter tackle skill), I made Ramza and one other guy a knight, and another squire an archer. I'm not sure what I'll do with the chemists. I might make one a priest, but cure doesn't seem to be as useful as potions so far. I might make the other one a black mage. Mages die easily, however. Its something to consider. At this point, I'm trying to get competent at using my archer. I know she will be useful from the top of the building in the battle after sweegy woods.

My characters are at about level 15. I'm only using the original 7. I did recriut the three members that the game gives you, but I haven't used them much yet. They're pretty far behind. Anyway, I have a few lancers and magic users. Lancers seem like a good class.

I'm at chapter 2, but I have yet to try any of the story battles. I've mostly been fighting random battles for JP, but it hasn't gotten old yet, because with each fight I get to try out new jobs/abilities.

While I'm not blown away by the game, I'm enjoying it quite a bit. It's a hell of a lot more fun than any other PSX FF that I've played.

When I played through the game, I only used the same 5 characters for just about every battle. The other standard characters I sent on bar jobs (though maybe a couple of times I used them in battles). My favorite class was probably ninjas, and I think next time I can work up to that point, I might try to have 5 ninjas on my team. Though their secondary skills will all be different. (I had one character master the geomancer class, and I hardly used his skills at all. It seems like a waste)

Though I liked Vagrant Story more, Final Fantasy Tactics was the next best PSX RPG I've finished (well, I guess I haven't finished THAT many PSX RPGs: Chrono Cross, Lunar, FF7 and 9, Suikoden, etc. Then again, I'm not sure which other PSX RPGs I have much hope for. Maybe Star Ocean 2) Although there's probably no need to exhaustively list which game I think is better than which ad naseum, I also liked FFT more than FF5 and FF6. I'm not sure when I decided I liked it as much as I do. The game just gradually grew on me.

Hmph. I made a long post about this earlier, and it got erased. I don't feel like going over everything again.

Anyway, I finished it. Took me about 53 hours, characters about at level 40.

There were some tough battles, but overall, I thought it wasn't too hard. I liked it better than FF 7 and 8, less than 4 and 6. Luckily I used multiple slots to save, so I can go back and do some sidequests if I want (although I probably wone want to).
