I.M.R.O Attrocities against Greeks
In 1893, certain Bulgarian intellectuals by the names of Dame Gruev, Hristo Tartarchev and four others formed the most anti-Macedonian terrorist organization known as the IMRO (VMRO). These men swore to secrecy in order to avoid any conflict with the Macedonians (Greeks) and the Turks. Tatarchev (who clearly states in his memoirs that the IMRO's goal was union with Bulgaria) became the first president of the organization. They copied an old Greek freedom cry, "Liberty or Death" (Eleftheria I Thanatos) and used it as part of their official logo (in their language "Svoboda Ili Smrt . This logo, which appeared on their seal, had the imagery of a crossed pistol, a dagger and a bomb. Although the organization's foundations were taking fold a certain naming issue did cause a problem which must be mentioned. This Bulgarian organization kept on taking up new names for the next four years. It went from being the Macedonian Revolutionary Committee to the Macedonian Revolutionary Organization to (unsurprisingly) The Bulgarian-Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization (Bulgarsko-Makedonsko-Ordinska revoliutsionna organizatsiia, in 1896) and eventually the Internal Organization. The cause of this constant name changing was for the obvious reason, the lack of a common belief. Some of the members professed that they were all Bulgarians living in Macedonia; others said that their goal was to unite with Bulgaria, and others even spoke of creating a separate Macedonian state with the Bulgarians running it. Two things they did agree on though; getting rid of the Ottoman Empire and more so, the Macedonians who had a Greek conscious. Hellenism to them had to be removed from Macedonia even if it meant using brainwashing and torture techniques.

Re: I.M.R.O Attrocities against Greeks
Macedonians(Greeks)???

Is this why the dispute over FYROM?

These Turks were mostly from the ethnic branch known as Turkmen,or Turcomans, and their arrival in the land that was to become modern Turkey is the basis of one of the most controversial and insecure doctrines maintained by the republic:that Anatolia was,to all its intents and purposes, always Turkish. As one textbook has it:

Turkmen gorups flowed into Anatolia and settled there, welcomed by the people who were unhappy with the old Byzantine administration, which certainly never represented this country.Very soon it was completely Turkified.Of course they did not find Anatolia empty. But its population was very small.A new Anatolian Turkish civilization was born.

This official version has the grace to mention that 'the Europeans never accepted this'.Almost all the people of this land,Turkish textbooks are quick to assert, are descended from these incoming waves of nomadic Central Asian tribes. This thesis is disputed outside Turkey. But until the 1990s,few were allowed to challenge what this meant for millions of Turkish citizens who knew perfectly well that they were not ethnically Turkish and who at home spoke Kurdish,Arabic,Laz or any of a dozen other minor languages.Few had any choice but to learn the official republican history of the Turks.

That's reasonably true, Ahristos. It's the main reason that, although the Greek government would say I was Greek, I'm not. I'm English and French – as your grandchildren may well turn out to be Germans.

But this forum is an international one, for communicating and learning from others, not just for ethnic or national groups talking to themselves. There are plenty like that on the net – this one is special precisely because it's so broad.

On the other hand - it was not the view of Venizelos and those who sought to expand Greek territory in 1913, was it? They talked of a Greek national consciousness even among those who did not speak Greek, in northern Epirus and Macedonia. Do you think they were wrong to do so?

Re: Karta
Not good at all!......its sickening.

The only way to make sure people you agree with can speak is to support the rights of people you don't agree with.........Do you agree, Dijedon?

Re: Karta

It was realized a very long time ago, that one of the binding elements of hellenism is its very language.

I believe it was a deliberate ottoman effort to try and root out the language where it could not or would not root out the people.

This is exactly were most of our problems begun. There was a very large percentage of Greeks living in Greece at the time o the revolution who could not speak Greek, and their existance gives rise now to all those idiots who wish to claim that maybe we should be less that what we have become.

It is a crazy world out there.
