Ikaruga Is Coming I've heard some people already got their copies. I didn't think it was supposed to ship until today, though. I believe the place I ordered from is based in New York, and I usually get mail from there quickly (though it seems to take a few extra days from California) I don't know how much, if any, I'll be able to play the game before Saturday afternoon, though (assuming I'd even get it before then) I have a fairly big exam Saturday morning I'm trying to get ready for. I've been trying to study for it at school, but it's so cold here I've been having trouble concentrating. Normally, I think our apartment is a bit too hot, but I'm looking forward to getting home tonight. Anyway, I doubt Ikaruga would become my #1 priority when I'd get it (I have a lot of other things in my backlog) but I'll try to post first impressions when I can. I have heard that the game does indeed work with the Utopia book disc, which was how I was intending to play it. -Loogaroo 'Come on, people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love everybody right now' Crawl and 1000 |

Ikaruga
I kind of wish I had preordered it, but I hear a version is coming out worldwide for Gamecube, so that's cool.
I've watched a few more Ikaruga movies, and it looks like the type of shooter I like. Simple, yet requiring lots of strategy. |

I LOVE FO! Hmm, do you have a Game Cube? I can't recall. (Or were you planning on the Gamefaqs contest to win it for you?) I'm hoping that the DC version will be the best =P since it's the original system and all. I hear that the DC version DOES have a practice mode, which I previously heard would be added to the Game Cube version. I haven't seen any videos of it. I have a hard time imagining how they'll get challenge out of the game with the ability to absorb bullets. But I guess I'll see when I play. I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

Re: Ikaruga Is Coming If this game is as good as the hype surrounding it would suggest, I may have a reason to get a GameCube... D E A T H A M S T E R![]() |

Boot 4 If I get Ikaruga, can you burn me a copy of the boot disc? |

I LOVE FO! Yeah, I'm pretty sure I could. I think I could probably just copy the disc I have, and if that doesn't work (I don't see why it wouldn't, but who knows), I could go through the process I went through to make mine to begin with. I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

Boot I'll give it a go myself, first. I have a ZIP file called utp-load-BootCD. I have no clue if that's what I need, but I could try burning the files onto a CD-R and seeing if it works. |

I LOVE FO! Whenever I made a self-booting CD, I found you can't just burn the files straight onto the CD. Well... Okay, you can do that, IF the files are in the final CD format they'd be on the CD (ie, not the files themselves, but an image of the CD that they'd be on) On DC emulation, those files are generally either Nero or Disc Juggler images. So, you have access to a CD burner? Maybe I could make an ISO of my boot disc and email that to you? I don't remember how big the file is, but I doubt it's very large. I just wonder if ISO's are burner-software independent (and, if so, why DC emulation doesn't use "normal" isos rather than Nero or Disc Juggler specific files) I hope Ikaruga comes today. I don't much for any other gaming priorites (other than updating my site) - I finished Zanac again on the NES (I should post about that somewhere), and could give Ikaruga some attention.. If it DOES come today, I hope the mailperson will be able to get it in our apartment's mailbox so I can play it tonight and won't have to pick it up from the post office tomorrow. Completely unrelated news: I plan on making french toast for dinner. And we rented Apocolypse Now over the weekend. I thought it lived up to the hype. An emotionally exhausting movie. -Loogaroo 'Come on, people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another right now' Crawl and 1000 |

Boot Hmm..I have a ZIP file named bootcd-nero as well. But you can try e-mailing me what's on your disc. I'll try to remember to bring some CD-Rs to school later this week. BTW, I did buy a copy of Ikaruga from eBay. I paid more than what I would have paid if I preordered, but only like 10 dollars more. As for the challenge, I hear it's pretty good. |

I LOVE FO! Grahh!! It would have come today, but it came via UPS, and they wouldn't drop it off. Crap. I don't know what to do. I'll eat lunch at home tomorrow, and hopefully they'll drop it off then. Otherwise, I don't know what to do. If I don't get it tomorrow, I guess I'll have to call and see if I can pick it up from their place. I'm looking at my CD as I type this. Right now, the file size is just over 2 MB (which would make it too big to send to hotmail) An iso of it might be smaller... but I haven't yet figured out how to make an iso with this software. I'm almost certain there's a way, so I'll keep looking (I guess I could try at school, if all else fails) The problem with Nero is that you have to install Nero on the computer that'll use it - which might not be possible at school. Boot
I have my "own" computer at school, and I can install pretty much anything but Napstery file sharing programs.
You can send a big file to my school e-mail account, but I'll have to be at school to get it. Namely, anything over 1 MB will take forever to DL on my dialup. To clarify, you'll have to send it to me while I'm st school. I've heard that Utopia discs don't work on newer DCs. I don't know how old mine is, but when the internal clock battery resets, it goes to something like November '99. |

I LOVE FO! I apparently would have to send it from school. I'm flabbergasted, but apparently there's no way to make a CD image with the software we have. There's an option to copy a CD - but HOW could you copy a CD with just one CD drive without the ability to make an image?? Unrelated note: I played Zanac again tonight (from the beginning), and made it to the final boss in one credit. I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

Boot I installed Nero, and followed these directions from DCEmulation. I have no way of knowing if it worked until I get home. But I'll be able to tell if it worked because Ikaruga came today! Do I just put the boot disc in, wait for the dog(?) to show up or the disc to stop spinning, the put in Ikaruga? |

I LOVE FO! Yeah, that's pretty much all there is to it. That thing looks like the dog from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, with antlers attached to its head. Ikaruga came today for me, too. Before I left this morning, I flipped my tv on its side, so it would be ready to play later (speaking of which, do/did you ever have Namco Museum 64? Could you flip your TV to play Pac Man in the correct proportions? The PSX Namco Museum let you do that, but I think some other remakes - like on Pac Man World - don't, and that game really sucks with the bars on the left and right of the screen) I don't have much to say about it yet. The first stage's music reminds me of Soul Calibur. I'm not quite sure how the chaining works yet. In Radiant Silvergun, you'd pick a color of enemy to kill, and spend the whole stage only killing that color, avoiding everything else. And every 3 enemies of the same color would count as a 'chain'. I don't think you have to only kill all, say, white enemies in this game. My hypothesis (untested) is that you can switch back and forth, so long as you only kill multiples of 3 of each enemy type. For example, killing 3 white enemies, then 3 black would be OKAY - killing 4 white enemies, then 3 black would get you one white chain, reset the chain, and get one black chain. The first stage seems mostly for practice (kind of like Mars Matrix's first stage) - when you fight the 1st stage's boss, he fires a mess of white bullets, and just a few black, so you know to become white and absorb the white bullets, and easily dodge what's left. Even by the second stage, it seems like the game could pick up - there are times when a mess of both colored enemies are on the screen, and you have to carefully decide which to blast, which to dodge, etc. It seems you can also fly over enemies of your color (again, like Mars Matrix) Graphics look better to me than Giga Wing 2's, but to be honest I was never impressed with Giga Wing 2's graphics. -Loogaroo 'Come on, people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another right now' Crawl and 1000 |

Ikarugy I only played once because I was busy, but I liked it. I'm not sure if I'll put as much time into it as Mars Matrix, but considering the last 3 DC shooters I've played I didn't care for, my impressions were positive. You're right about chaining. You can have one chain, be it black or white. (e.g., BBB WWW and BBB BBB will both count as 2 chains. I made it to stage 2, and it does seem to pick up by then. I'm trying to figure out how I want to configure the controls; I had A to shoot, X to switch, and R to "bomb," but in panic situations, I often found myself pressing R to switch, so I might try it that way. I don't think I'll be flipping my TV, though. |

I LOVE FO! I didn't like the default controls. I kept forgetting how to switch. I don't remember the DC's button arraingment, but if it were a SNES controller, B would be to shoot, and A would be to switch. I changed it to Y to shoot, B to switch (again, using SNES conventions). I'm keeping R to bomb. Even the first stage can have some tough spots if you're playing for score. One of hardest parts to keep a chain going was those rows of white and black enemies that shuffle back and forth (right before the two big white and black gunships appear) I said you could just be white when the boss fires those white shots, but you can kill him faster if you're black (and get a higher time bonus). I wonder how you unlock other stages for the practice mode. So far, I only have 1 and 2, though I made it to stage 3 (with continuing. Maybe that's it. To unlock the score challenge stages in Giga Wing, you have to reach those stages in one credit) So far, I only got a 'B' rating in stage 1. -Loogaroo 'Come on, people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another right now' Crawl and 1000 |

I LOVE FO! I was right about reaching a stage in one credit unlocking it in practice mode. At least I unlocked stage 3 after reaching it in one credit. I flipped my TV back to try the two horizontal modes. I'll avoid them if at all possible. You lose about half the screen! There's considerably less detail. There's also a vertical mode that doesn't involve screen flipping - it plays like a horizontal shooter - but, after being used to playing it 90 degrees away, the experience was very disorienting. I'm not sure what method of attack I'll apply to the game, but I'm thinking of playing the normal game for survival, and sometimes work on the practice games for score. I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

Ikaruga I got my timer past the 1 hour mark last night. The best I've gotten on stage 1 is a C++ rank. (Although I did get a rank called "Dot Eater," and I have no idea what it means.) |

Gamefaqs I got my ass kicked in that Gamefaqs contest. I kept track of the rakings for a whole YEAR. Every fuc[/b]king DAY. My worst fear came true. Since rankings are only shown on an ordinal scale, I had no idea what proportion of hits the FAQs are getting. I figured that GTA Vice City was only up for three months, and thus wouldn't have had time enough to get enough hits to be in the top 10. It was #3. |
