Infant born in Mexico weighs over 13 pounds
A very unusual baby was born in in Mexico this week. Blanca Rosa de Leon Garcia gave birth to a bouncing boy that weighs more than 13 pounds, about the size of a three-month-old infant.
The head of Mexico's National Institute of Health says the newborn's size is "exceptionally rare." Only about about 1 in 40,000 babies are that big at birth, he estimated.
Salvador Garcia, the baby's father, said the family is "very happy."
“We didn’t expect this though, now we have to buy bigger clothing because what we have is not going to fit," he said.
Pedro Garcia was delivered by Caesarean section.

Re: Infant born in Mexico weighs over 13 pounds
13 pounds would have been the average for my grandmother. Our mother was her tiny one-at only 12 lbs.some-odd oz.And she had all 4 of hers at home.
It isn't unusual for women with gestational diabetes to have babies this large. What disturbs me is the side comment that the baby was delivered by ceasarean section.Size alone is no reason to do this.I realize it has become habit in the US for doctors to automatically do a C-section when they believe the infant is over 8 pounds, but, the human female body is built to give birth to a baby up to 15 lbs.
Cute baby,though.

Re: Infant born in Mexico weighs over 13 pounds
Shad ya know i love ya so no offense but...screw that!!! a 15 lb bbay??? threw THERE!!! noooooooo!
I understand what you mean about c section and yes gestational diabetes too. But, when they thought punky was going to be to large we were informed of the risk...includeing brain damage if she became stuck and a fissula(sp?) if i had to strain. Luckily she slowed down in the last month on weight gain so it wasnt a concern, but erring on the side of caution in my opinion is a good idea when mom in baby are at risk. Now the ones scheduling c sections and inductions so dad can be there or cause doc is going on vacation REALLY need to learn to consider whats best for their child.

Aww bless him, he's so cute - and huge! My biggest weighed half an ounce short of 10lbs - and that was bad enough! It was a normal delivery tho, although he did get kind of stuck, which was risky, as the cord was around his neck - tho he was ok and wasn't in any kind of distress, which is more than can be said for me!
I was checked for gestational diabetes through all my pregnancies, as all my babies were pretty big, but tests were all negative - so i guess they were just meant to be that way!Iv'e never heard of c sections being offered for larger babies tho - i would agree with you Gaia, after my experience, that its best to err on the side of caution! An it makes me all broody again looking at that little cutie!

Re: Infant born in Mexico weighs over 13 pounds
See,the problem lies in the fact that doctors insist that women give birth lying down on thier backs, the only worse postition for childbirth would be to hang the woman up by her toes.If you allow a woman to give birth the way Mother Nature intended, the woman WILL find the position she needs to be in,to make birth easiest, and most comfortable for her.All those ligaments and bones are meant to stretch apart,to allow for baby's passage.
If you ever get the opportunity, read a book called"The American Way of Birth".You will find that the vast majority of complications during labor are the fault of the medical"professionals" attending.Almost all complications that occur during birth can be prevented, simply by NOT forcing the birthing mom to do things against nature.A few examples are;not allowing the mother to eat during early labor-(Moms need thier strength, and forcing them to go without food will not prevent nausea,it will only drop her blood sugar, and p9ossibly prolong labor),the use of artificial hormones to "augment" labor;(doctors prefer to rush it along,so pitocin is given, whether it's needed or not,to "speed things up",and all it does is makes the contractions far harder than nature intended, making pain medication almost necessary, pitocin is also one of the biggest causes of fistulas,as well as THE major cause of uterine rupture, because of the intense contractions forcing intense pushing).
At one point, after the births of my last two kids,I studied to become a midwife. The only thing that held me back was not having a car,and my drivers license.I'm still passionate about the causes involved with childbirth, and would love nothing more than to see a return to the common use of midwives and doulas in this country.I really didnt mean to go off on a tangent about this, but I tend to do that about things I'm passionate about. Please forgive me-

Re: Infant born in Mexico weighs over 13 pounds
No worries Love...we Love therefore we disagree vicious cycle
I had a friend who scheduled an induction for when dad and doc could both be there I was horrified. She ended up needing a csection after mass pitocin and cytotech (sp? softens the cervix to encourage dialation) and 28 hours of labor with her FOURTH child!!
I think I am normal when I say I LOVE to share my "war stories" and this thread seems invented for that!! So come on children share your birthing stories!!! We have a few girls who have yet to experiance the torture er um pleasure of birth...and we may actually help them when they do!
I was gestational Diabetic with all of mine and insulin dependant with punky so this left alot of medical considerations and special testing and extra personal blah blah. I have panic disorder so lying down was not an option with any of them....they droped the bed into birthing chairs with the first four...with Punky I had an over welming urge to squat which the nurse allowed as long as I was facing the head of the bed (I was alone when I had punky except for a wonderfull nurse) She was crowned with her sack intact when the doctor came in he broke it and theres punky less then 4 hours after the labor started and my longest delivery with my biggest child lol...along with ALOT of miconium (SP? in utero bowel movement) Id have NEVER survived a flat birth they tried with sammy but i couldnt breath and tried to get up and go home (hey i was 19 hehehe) I was lucky enough that in our area virtually ALL the hospitals have an attached Birthing center...so you have birthing center comfort and treatment in a place where you have hospital security should something go wrong. That would be my advice for mom to bes...find a hospitol that has an attached birthing center...these are equipped with beds that drop into birthing chairs. And TELL them you cant lay flat... Shad is soooo right on that call...gravity is your greatest friend while in labor!!! And always remeber they HAVE to follow your wishes if it is medically feasible. With all of mine i attempted to go home (going so far as to remove my IV with Mikayla) because they were not following my wishes...id have rather squatted in the parking lot then feel restricted. By the time punky was coming I knew to walk in saying "I wont lay flat, I want a heplock NOT a full iv Line unless it proves necessary, no pitocin unless i am in labor over 18 hours and oh by the way here is my baby book could you print my babys feet and tube a lock of her hair to tape in it?" My nurse (Elizabeth I will NEVER EVER forget her!) Laughed at me and said "so i am assuming ya have done this before". lol What I didnt know was this is called a birthing plan and can be made in advance on paper and handed over with all your other stuff so you dont have to say a word...I got a nifty purple bracelet which indicated there was a birthing plan in effect and it should be followed as long as it was medically and time feasable.( and i had the red allergic to asprin one, and the nifty yellow diabetic one and the orange RH negative one and the regular hospitial one and the one with my room number and baby sex and ID #... I had more braclets then James brown has rings!!! LMAO)
I have to say I was blessed...A nurse named karen was in my room while giving birth to my oldest 4, Sammy my first baby was the very first birth she ever observed...we stay in her heart and memory like she stayed in ours...she said we were the reason she chose to speciallize in premature and neonatal trama. Anne was in with my first 2 births and cared for us after my last 3 and both were in the room when i had my tubal (and helped me threw the initial crying fit the pending sterilization caused ) I can name every nurse who cared for me and my children...and only 2 do i have anything bad to say about! Dee Promised me a popcicle and they were out (with jacob) I felt horribly betrayed lol and Laura spoke to my mom, mom in law and paul like I was not there, everyone forgot in the confusion of chrissys difficult labor and delvery It was ME doing the pushing! lol
When the first shift nurse came in with punkins birth I asked if there was a comment box, thinking there was a problem she got her nurse supervisor who came to speak to me. Poor little Kathy stood there looking nervous! When the NS asked if there was a problem I said not at all...I want a nurse rewarded!!! She sat down with me, filled out the paper and when punky was hospitialized for an upper resp. infection a few weeks later I was met with a huge hug from Elizabeth...Seems the week punky was born there was a $400 above and beyond the call of duty bonus in her check! I told her i didnt do anything...she did it all and thanked her profousely for making a terrible scary time a wonderfull experiance.
People this woman held my hand saying things like "Ok, baby has had an in utero bowel movement so we cant let her breathe when she comes out...the cord will give her oxygen...." They rushed her to the heating table and i said she so black!! "Thats ok...she will pink up" and after they suctioned her out she did...then it was ok baby weighs this here is her stats...when there was bad news to be broken she held no punches but explained it perfectly where aside from the initial mommy "OH MY GODDESSES!" I was fine. Thalias sugar was 25 and dropping when she was born "Ok babys sugar is 25 and droping so we need to give her sugar water before you can nurse" then she placed her in my arms and explained for the first 12 hours she needed to be closely monitored and she would stay with me until first shift arrived so Thalia could stay in my room instead of neonatal ICU. Paul picked a fight with me on the phone an hour after she was born because i had a male doctor. Elizabeth held me while I cried and informed security to keep an eye when he visited...if I rang while he was there the nurses wer prepared to throw him out. Because of her, anytime he came in security was patrolling the floor. This isnured that even her sperm donar couldnt ruin this wonderfull time for my baby and me!
I will forever and ever hold tender feelings for this beautifull woman!!!
so whats yalls story? hehehe
(see shad your not the only one who feels so pationately they ramble! lmao)

Re: Infant born in Mexico weighs over 13 pounds
Gestational diabetes is one of the very few cases where I will humbly agree that hospital birth is PROBABLY a good idea. And I do tell EVERY woman I know, who is considering having a child,to PLEASE,please, please, educate yourself thoroughly.Find out what all those drugs do,not only to you,but to your unborn baby-short-term,and long-term effects.Talk to women who have had real natural childbirth about what it feels like, how they handled it,how long it really took,etc...trust me,few women mind talking about it.Watch videos of natural births, and not just the head coming out.Watch the mother-to-be.Watch her breathing, her movements. And read.Read a lot.Read everything you can get your hands on.
I learned to visualize my cervix opening like a flower, with each contraction, and learned to completely relax my body,so that it could do the work it needed to do.And I learned that from a book.It made birth such a wonderful experience for me that I truly wish I could do it again(and again, and again).But,alas,8 pregnancies has been enough for this body to handle for this lifetime, and 5 children here has been a handful.I only wish I had had the option of homebirth with the first 3.But I lived in a state where it had been outlawed. It wasnt until I moved to California that I was introduced to it.And the woman who introduced me to my midwives went on to deliver her first baby,a strapping 10 pound 11 ounce baby girl, with those same midwives,in a tub in her living room.No tears,no complications, and a 9 hour labor.

Aww.. what a cutie! Beautiful mass of hair! My four all looked bald when they were born! They had the finest covering of "fur" that they lost within two weeks!
My hubbys dad was 13lb something.. which I found out a little before I was due to drop my first! Scared all the life outta me when I thought our first might be that big! (literally, I think I went into labour a couple of days later! )
Most of ours were in a hurry! 1st son was one week early, 2nd was two weeks early, 3rd refused to arrive early and came on his due date! and our 4th son was born almost four weeks early! I had all four as natural births without epidurals or c-sections, or any medication at all! *gasp*
