Jacob Joseph arrived March 20! Long birth story...
Hi All,

I've been off the board for quite some time trying to get used to this whole mommy thing. I finally have a few minutes to post...

On Thursday, March 20, Jacob Joseph arrived in this world five days before his due date.

My birth story, quickly...

My water broke in bed around 4:00 a.m. Thank goodness I'd invested in a waterproof mattress pad! I hadn't been having regular contractions or anything, so it was kind of out of the blue. Anyway, I called L & D and they told me to come in.

At first my contractions were quite irregular, so when my OB finally saw me around 7:00 a.m., she decided to start me on Pitosin. I endured very strong contractions that were eventually about 2-3 minutes apart until about 10:00 a.m., when I was dialated enough for an epidural (yay epidurals!! I'm not one to deal well with pain!!). I was dialated to about 3.5 centimeters at that point.

The Pitosin was really cranked up, and the contractions were coming very strong. Things were going well, but there was some concern about the baby's heartrate dropping a bit. Also, they could tell there was merconium mixed in with my amniotic fluid, so they did some kind of saline flush to get as much of it diluted as they could before the baby came out.

Around noon I was at 6 centimeters, and then at about 1:00 I was at 8. I knew the baby was coming very soon after that because I felt enormous pressure in my bowel area. At 1:45 I asked to be checked, and although everyone was skeptical, sure enough I was at 10 centimeters! So, I was ready to push, and I really wanted to push, but my OB was doing a c-section and couldn't get to me. Finally, the nurse said we could start pushing without him. During this pushing phase, they were again concerned about the baby's heartrate, so in between pushing I had to breathe in oxygen. Strangely though, none of this stressed me out. I felt so much pressure down there that all I was thinking about was getting that baby out! Finally, the OB arrived, and just as he was about to get the vaccuum to help with the delivery, I pushed out Jacob Joseph at 2:28 p.m.

Because of the risk that Jacob had swallowed the merconium, a neonatalogist was standing by to check his lungs. Thankfully everything was fine, so he did not need antibiotics or anything. I did have an episiotomy, but one thing I learned is that it's important to go with the flow when it comes to giving birth. Plus, when the doctor says that an episiotomy will make the baby come out faster, I was game for anything at that point!!!

Anyway, we've been home for about a week and a half now, and things are going well. Jacob is such a joy to have around! Breastfeeding has been challenging, to say the least, but it's getting better little by little.
