LSSR Meeting 02.21.04
Battle of Budapest – Debriefing
The objective was to have an all out Soviet assault on German positions in the outskirts of Budapest, 1944. A village of multi story buildings was set up and a series of trench works and ambush positions were created for the Germans.
German assets included:
Over a hundred soldiers.
A PAK 40 AT Gun.
Several Kubelwagons.
A Motorcycle Ambulance.
Three Tank Destroyers.
A 251 Hanomag.
Assorted Panzerfausts, Panzerschreks and machine guns.
The Russians staged a head on frontal attack against the German positions using armor and assault squads.
Russian assets included:
Over a hundred soldiers.
Three T-34’s (one motorized).
Two Russian Tank Destroyers (one motorized).
Two wheeled Armored Cars.
One wheeled Command & Control Radio Car.
Assorted Maxim machine guns & other implements of destruction.
A fierce battle ensued throughout the day. Casualties were high, but both sides had ample medical personnel. House to house fighting was particularly nasty because the Russian tanks had demolished most of the buildings and the Germans had seeded them with MG posts and snippets. One highlight of the battle was the Russian Assault Squad charging the German trenches at the end of the street only to find out they were caught in crossfire between two German rooftop MG posts. Soviet armor rushed in and saved the day, but took a terrible beating from the numerous Panzerfausts and Panzerschreks in the surrounding buildings.
Despite their fierce defense, by the end of the day the Russians had pushed the German defenders back into the city proper. The outskirts of Budapest were now in Russian hands and the door to the city was wide open…
Afterwards much buying, selling and trading was done followed by lots of food. We had a couple of new folks show up and a few old timers who had been AWOL for a spell came by. All in all a great time was had by all. The motorized tanks were awesome.
Pictures will be up on the KRIEGSMACHINE site LSSR page and also on the CREATIVE DIVERSIONS LSSR page next week.
Thanks
