Loot Policy
The main premise of AiF's award system is "for the greater good of the guild." Wow, sounds altruistic! Really, it is. The intent is that awards are granted based on the maximum benefit to the guild. All well and good, but how can that be guaranteed or even decided upon? Well, it's not easy. And it can't be guaranteed. Why? Because nobody can foresee the future. A nice award can go to someone, only to have them depart AiF for a guild farther along the raid path than AiF is. That's always a bummer, but don't be fooled that there is any way to prevent it. People have different goals, and always will. As such, people will always be moving on. The good thing is that this also means that new people will be joining us here in AiF!
Let me first start off by outlining the procedure that should be followed for announcing and requesting loot.
1.) The loot manager (an officer or designated loot council member) will announce to the raid the availability of an item, including a link to the item. The message will indicate that those interested must link their current item for that slot, and that any interest in the item will be acknowledged. This should be spammed 3 times to ensure that it isn't missed in scrolling chat. Be watchful for these announcements; if you miss it, you only have yourself to blame.
2.) Interested parties must indicate to the loot manager their interest with a /tell that includes a link to the item they currently use for that slot.
3.) The loot manager will reply with a brief /tell to acknowledge the request. When I am loot manager, I say "noted." If you do not get acknowledgement, you should repeat your request after a reasonable period of time. I.e. don't spam your request in 20 seconds, wait a minute or so; there are other people sending their /tells, too.
4.) The loot manager (or another loot council member or officer) will announce to the raid the item and who it was awarded to.
Now I'll discuss a behind-the-scenes look at how the award decision is made.
Once all the requests are known, the interested parties and their current item links are announced in the loot council channel (usually the officer channel). At that point, a discussion ensues about who the award will go to. Council members often put forth suggestions as to who something should go to, usually commenting upon their reasoning. The council tries to complete their discussion in a reasonable amount of time or until a concensus is arrived at. If no concensus is arrived at, a vote is taken (usually, this is pretty rare). Ties are broken by the raid or guild leader.
Things taken into consideration *might* include, in no particular order, and not limited to:
Recent loots already awarded.
Best improvement when both items are compared.
The individual offering up current slot to hand down to another.
Best benefit to the guild.
Other things that might help your chances of winning an award *might* include, in no particular order, and not limited to:
Attend more raids; kinda like the lottery... more tickets = better chance to win!
Be loyal to AiF; stick it out with us over the long haul!
Help out your guildmates.
So basically, that's how we do it. Not all that complicated. Not at all objective - in fact, completely subjective. We do realize that the system is not perfect. In fact, it's possible that someone could fall through the cracks and not receive loot. BTW, if you ever feel this way (or have ANY type of concern), feel free to contact an officer about it. If you don't bring it up, we can't address it!
We're thinking of implementing a Trophy Room where we could list recent awards. Not only would this serve to show off our hard earned rewards, but it can be used to highlight if there are any deficiencies in our award tendencies.
Anyway, I hope you see the system working for the benefit of AiF as a whole, because that is the intended goal. If you feel it is not, or the system warrents improvements, I welcome your feedback and criticism.
