Moving On After Vengeance
(A continuation of Quickshot's Tale, post-The New Champions)
Quickshot grumbled to herself as she approached her apartment in King's Row. She'd gotten the "penthouse" floor with skylight to facilitate getting in and out as her costumed self. And it was a cheap place.
She sighed, "Just about every other night, I have to shoot Circle of Thorns off my roof and have them taken away." She raised her gauntlets and fired, the powerful blasts of quantum energy knocking out the trespassing foes. The victim freed, and the members of the Thorns in custody, she finally was able to sneak inside her place about thirty minutes later.
Adam was there, in the kitchen, cooking dinner, "I was wondering where you were. Trouble, as usual?"
Quickshot nodded, "On the roof. Well, earlier, I was doing the usual thing..DATA has me working on some new things. After work, Seargant Bernhard wanted me to help with the 5th Column. Apparently, one of their bigwig officers was planning a huge attack and then an escape. They'd captured some people to brainwash, too. The education officer gave me a rough time, but I eventually took him down. After that, I had to stop mystic items from being auctioned off to various criminal groups." She moved to the large sink in the next room..a customized bathroom with industrial showers and a huge sink.
Unfastening her armor and placing in the soaking tub, she continued, "What a party. I got in there, and it was like a Who's Who. Hellions, Tsoo, Outcasts, Circle of Thorns..and a bunch of stolen goods."
Adam frowned, "Are you all right? That sounds pretty rough." He moved over to the bathroom to inspect her, "You're injured. Some light bruising. Any pain?"
Eve shook her head, "No. I think I'm fine. I took them out pretty easily. One of the Tsoo guys was complaining that he didn't like 'this mercantilism'. They crack me up. Well, right before I crack them up. So, the Zig gets more full. I should really go after the lawyers. You know who's out again?"
Adam eyed his fiance, "Who?"
Eve turned on the shower, beginning to scrub off the day's toil from her skin and hair, "Clockwork King. That stupid brain-in-a-jar managed to be able to get an attorney who got him off on technicalities. But I did get my revenge on him, in a way. I almost pity him. Almost. Oh, also, that reminds me..I need your help as a doctor."
Adam nodded, "Whatever you need, you know I'm here for you."
Eve started to shampoo her long, red hair, "Well, I've noticed similarites between The Lost and The Rikti. I think that since they couldn't outright take over, they're trying to infiltrate slowly. It almost seems like they figured a way to turn homeless people into themselves. I got some..blood samples."
Adam raised his eyebrow, "Blood? I hope you didn't kill them. You know how I feel about that."
Eve nodded and rinsed her hair, then shut off the water, "Nobody was killed. My weapons cause disruption, and maybe at the most some concussions. I used a hypodermic. They may not be the cleanest samples, but they should be enough. If you can see if they match stuff on record from the war."
Adam grabbed a towel off the rack and moved to help dry Eve off, patting her skin lovingly, "That I can do. I still wonder if I made the right choice. But right now, the city needs doctors. A guy in a red suit with glowing punches is dime-a-dozen."
Eve wrapped her arms around Adam, "Doc Cosmic was never dime-a-dozen. You're one of a kind, and I love that about you. So..now that we got through business, what's for dinner?"
Adam smiled and kissed her, telling her, "It's a surprise. Get dressed and we'll eat."
