Musings in the Big City
Curlan Devick sat on the newly rebuilt city walls and stared off into the deep night that had set in. The moon was high, only a few days off from full, so he had more then enough light to see deep into the woods, more then enough light to see the few wolves that seemed to come closer with every night. It was all he could do to keep from communicating with them.

His golden eyes pierced deep into the woods, straight into the ones that stared back at him, questioning why he would not run with them. It was the same feeling he got the day the wolf pack died near Berleon, and the same last second feeling he got from Green Branch before his thread had been burned out of the weave. The memory itself brought back tears.

And the wolves blurred out of sight, but he could stull hear their call as the small pack howeled to the near full moon. And the din of the city behind him tried to push it out, but still the call went out.

He had taken enough, it was time for a ride with his brothers.

"I'm coming brother," he thought, opening himself up to them again, the first time in months. Actually, he could not remember.

"We have been waiting Green Leaf," an answer came back, and he knew that he was doing the right thing.

Re: Musings in the Big City
Saker stood on the tower, leaning against the ramparts, watching the walls below. Bathed in moonlight, most was laid out for him to see but for the dark shadows cast by the ramparts. But Curlan was in clear view, sitting with his eyes turned away from Saker. He studied the man for a long time, slightly confused and wondering what the man was up to. He was a most excellent scout, invaluable, really, brilliant. But there were untold secrets that he kept around himself.

He folded his hands, looking down and around the place before hopping down from the tower, walking down the wall in silence. Only a faint breeze stirred in the branches far off, creating a faint rustling sound that covered all traces of the sound of his boots, but Curlan still turned while Saker was still several paces away, hands at his sides, long hair whipping around briefly in the brief wind. "Curlan," Saker said in way of greeting. "Fine night out." He smiled warmly. "Too fine. I couldn't sleep. How are you?"

Re: Musings in the Big City
Curlan looked over a moment before Lord Saker called his name. He had heard the wind rustle off the mans clothing. He smiled and gave a small bow.

"Ah, that it is Lord Mandell. Is it only lack of sleep that brings your out on the walls at this hour? I was about to go for a ride myself. A bit of....self reflection perhaps."

Curlan looked back towards the wolves, trying to keep his golden eyes averted from Saker's gaze. He was a bit antsy standing there, wanting to run with the wolves after all these months, but he waited patiently, as a proper scout should.

"I will be there brothers. I will be but a minute here."

Re: Musings in the Big City
Saker watched his friend's eyes rove across the woodlines again. Another chilling howl from the night wrapped around Saker like a soft blanket, easing away the warmth of the night, in some sort of eerie, reverse comfort. Saker repressed a shiver, noted how Curlan seemed to relax in the sound.

And it clicked. His golden eyes, the old tales . . .

"You can talk to wolves." Saker smiled slightly. It wasn't a question, nor a harshly-phrased accusation. Just a simple statement of fact from one just realizing it. "I can't believe I didn't see that before." He turned back to Curlan, hoping he didn't scare the man off. He was one of his best scouts . . . no, THE best scout that Saker had to hand. He smiled slightly, watching the treeline again. "What's it like?"

Secrets Revealed
Curlan's heart sank as the words came out of Saker's mouth. His well guarded secret had been revealed without a way for him to deny it. Saker knew, and that in and of itself could ruin what time he had left with the Band.

Then, with three little words, Curlan felt a small smile pull across his face. Saker wasn't scared of him, or the wolves for that mater. He shook his head with a wry grin on his face, trying to find the words to answer Lord Saker.

"I'm not sure how to answer that my Lord," Curlan said with a small laugh. "What does it feel like to be a woman? The wolves don't speak.....it's all comunication by thought. And it's more the communication of pictures and ideas then words. I don't get told they are five miles away, I'm shown where they are in comparison to myself. I don't get told about three columns of soldiers, I see three columns of soldiers, but there are several details wolves don't look for. As I said Lord Saker, it isn't very easy to explain."

Curlan looked back to the woods. His run with the wolves would still be a ways out, especially if Saker wanted to question him more. He sighed inwardly. Sometimes it would just be easier to be a wolf.

Re: Secrets Revealed
"Not very easy to explain . . ." Saker repeated, with a shake of his head. Then he laughed. "Aren't most things around rather hard to explain these days?" Women among them, he thought bitterly. He needed to talk to someone from the White Tower, still. He shoved such thoughts from his mind. Just for one night, he wanted to be free from such issues, think what he wanted to think, do what he wanted to do.

"As Lord of Manetheren, I think I would frown highly upon your choice of friends," Saker said in mock-stern tones. "But as your friend, and as Saker, I have only favor to ask of you about this."

He paused, until Curlan looked at him curiously and Saker smiled mischeviously. "Could you . . . ah . . . ask the wolves to stay out of the fields? The farmers are killing me with their whining."

Re: Secrets Revealed
Curlan let out a laugh that nearly killed him as he ran through the different ways to tell the wolves not to eat the easy prey that the cattle were. He nodded to Lord Saker, trying to get himself to calm down.

"I'll see what I can do Lord Saker, but the wolves have a mind of their own.I can only ask, not command."

He took another look to the wood line before focusing back on Lord Saker, still trying to shake the thoughts of telling the wolves what to do from his head.

"Now, Lord Saker, if I may take my leave......."

Re: Secrets Revealed
Saker nodded, still looking out at the woodlands. "You'll be back by dawn, yes? I fear . . . I fear that there is much to be done." He turned away, walking back the way he had come in complete silence. The Warder's grace was truely with him tonight. There was something in the air that made the hair on the back of his neck rise, something in the feel of the wind on his skin that caused a growing sense of sudden unease within him. Disappearing into the shadows as if he had drawn a fancloak about himself, he licked his lips once before turning to see Curlan making his way off of the wall. The man . . . there was something about him that shouted of potential and power, that there was something yet untapped within him. Saker vowed, right then and there, to see just what that was.

Re: Secrets Revealed
"Aye Milord, well before dawn," Curlan said with a slight grin. "And you know your scouts are always ready to work, no matter what the task."

Curlan waited till Lord Saker was out of sight before sliding out into the night. He ran till he felt like his heart would burst and then ran harder. The wolves fell in around his and he dipped and slid through the pines, his leaf blade slapping against his thigh as he ran, the night air hugging tight to his body, keeping him cool even as he glided amongst the trees.

Stopping in a clearing, he saw the moon shine down clearly, the wolves surrounding him, watching, waiting. It had been far too long since he had been with his brothers. A large shaggy wolf steped forward, obviouse leader of this pack.

"Welcome brother Green Leaf," the wolf said, "We wondered when you'd answer our call, and to lead us with your own."

Curlan nodded, and then threw his head back and howled to the moon, the wolves joining him. His tenor carried higher, and more earil then the wolves, and yet seemed to fit, ike the missing line of a song.

Never again would he take so long to return to his brothers.
