New Trinket
The sheet of parchment slid from numb fingers then burst in to flames before hitting the floor. Indra gave a slight gasp at the flames but noticed no ash on her carpet. She hurried over to her door and called out for a servant. Her heart was racing with excitement. The note was short but the message was sweet... she would prove herself in the days to come. The task she had been set to do would make her first among many in the eyes of her Mistress.
The servant, unuse to her smile, stepped back a bit. Indra blinked then frowned at her. "Get Keshin for me. Tell him to hurry. And have Tela come to me also. I wish to change." With that she slammed the door. She made her way over to her wardrobe wondering what she could wear to Far Madding. While she was contempleting the climate she heard her door open. Keshin strolled in with a sword on his hip wiping his hands on a napkin that Tela handed him. The napkin was covered in blood and Indra could not help but smile. "I will assume you just finished with Deacon?" "Yes my Lady, he proved to be the sport you promised he would be." Indra chuckled as she turned back to her wardrobe, "He was stealing from me. He could only run so far as fat as he was. Where did you catch him?" Keshin moved to sit while Tela moved to help Indra search through her clothes. She pushed the older woman a bit away from her with a frown. "He was caught near the Jangai Pass. He had brought a few miscreants to protect them but they were easily dispatched of. "And the money they had been given?" Keshin nodded, "It was taken back my Lady and is now back were it belongs." Cheerful Indra pointed at the dresses she wanted to take. "So where is he? You know I wished him to be alive." "He is alive although he will not stay that way for long." Indra turned to look at Keshin now infuriated. "He did not hold up well Indra some of the things you wished down has drained him." The explaination soothe her ire. "Bleed like a stuck pig did he? Oh well I shall see him when I'm done with my wardrobe. We go to Far Madding Keshin to find a very interesting prize. once I am done with Deacon we leave at once. I have been told that we are not the only ones searching and I hate to lose."
With that she gave Tela a look and the girl hurried to her side as they left the room.

Ranine grumbled to himself, leaving Sophie to her own thoughts, or more like, to his thoughts, as he hurried down to give a speech to him new army. They were preparing to start taking over some of the local towns to cosolidate his power.
More people came every day, but he wanted to speed up the process. He was getting impatient for the crown that had been promised to him. It was getting close to the time to start getting it for himself.
"Sir, some scouts just brought this back," a page said, handing him a note. Ranine took it and unfolded it, trying to surmise what it was.
As best as he could tell, it was a map, but the writing was in the Old Tongue, and he didn't have time for it.
"Take this to Voclas, he can translate it for me."
Re: New Trinket
The small hut Keshin had lead Indra to was a dismal sight. It was falling apart and the roof need to be rethatched. Wrinkling her nose a bit Indra opened the door and walked in. The dim light of the setting sun filtered through cracks in the wall but Indra found what she sought quickly enough. The overweight thief was slumped in a chair blood dripping from his body to the floor. She walked around him a bit so she could see what had been done to him. She tsked a bit at the cuts and bruises on him. Finally satisfied with the sight of him she stood directly in front of him then leaned forward. The man started and would have toppled over if Keshin had not caught him. "Deacon? Can you hear me?" She snapped her fingers in his face. the man looked at her and cringed. Delighted at his reaction Indra caught him by the fat around his chin. "I have the honors of killing you as I see fit Deacon. I let my friend here torture you because he enjoys it but I iwll be the one to kill you. But first..." She stepped back and kenshin handed her a sword, "I want to know more about what Ranine has planned. I know you worked under him for a while. He of course thinks of you as I do so he would not take notice of things you might have heard. Tell me everything you know before i kill you. Oh and before you decided that you would like to keep your secrets I would like to warn you.... I will heal you this instant then start the torture of you all over again." The grunt of surprise did not make Indra feel anyhting but boredom. No one new she could channel and she was far from powerful but the tricks her Mistress taught her proved useful at times. "So I suggest you spilll what you know now and your death will be swift. Painful but swift."
It took the man a while but all the things he knew he told to Indra and it pleased her not one bit. So she killed him and the pieces she sent to his followers were messages not to undermine her with Ranine. Unfortunately for her she was no closer to her goal of gaining the man's favor. Sighing over that she hurried back to her home. Her baggage had been packed and she had to be in Far Madding sooner rather then later. Ranine was the least of her problems. if she did not find the prize her mistress wanted she would be dead.

Re: New Trinket
Ranine stood before the gathering of his faithful. Many of them were no more then farmers, but they had banded together under him, hoping to change Carhien into something better then the class divided state it had always been. He could hardly appear seriouse this was going so well for him.
"Men of Carhien!" he shouted over the nervouse murmer, quieting them with his voice and presence. "I come to you today as an eaqual! Not as a noble, but as a fellow man! I am asking you to join me in uniting Carhien. No more letting the nobles decide what happens with your land, how you get your food, who fights for them in their petty games. We will make carhien the land it once was, prosperouse, safe, and above all free! Join me brothers, in the fight for unity and freedom!"
The crowd erupted in cheers and applause, shouts of admiration came from different places, but the reaction was what he had hoped for.
He stepped down, ordering a few of his men to start signing up and organising the army. It was not a job for him. He was off to see Voclas, and find out what sort of map he had.

Re: New Trinket
The sun was hidden behind a thin bit of clouds in the sky when the figure stepped out of the shadows. He was wrapped entirely in black robes, even his face hidden away behind the overhanging hood. The building was small, not well hidden, but entirely obscure nonetheless, a place no one would ever go to. The man in front of him turned around slowly. "Voclas," the figure murmured in greeting. The voice was neither harsh nor soft, surprising due to his dark appearance.
"Master!" the man stammered, almost dropping the paper clutched in his hands.
"What do you have?" the figure said, and a black-wrapped hand reached up to take the paper from him. Voclas handed it over without hesitation, launching into a stammering reply as to what it was, where it had been found, and what it said. When he had fallen silent, the black man handed the parchment back and turned away. "This is . . . very good." He paused for a moment, then turned back to Voclas. "If anyone comes looking for this, you know what to do."
"Of course, master," Voclas said, and he figure stepped back into the shadows. He would be gone forever, as far as Voclas was concerned now. That man had talents far beyond this world. Shaking his head to himself, he set back to translating more. This paper, it seemed, was the stuff that ended only one way--in bloodshed.

Kerin stepped out of the inn with a sigh. Another sleepless night like that one, and she would be forced to start clubbing people. The entire night, the inn had been awake, and very, very loud. The talk was growing to fever pitch--people were in a full blown panic around these parts about this new "lord of the land" from the far west. She couldn't really see why--the message that he gave out was rather good, and there hadn't been much in the way of open battle around him. That she knew of.
Of course, there were dark whispers around the man though. Sinister murmurings in the shadows of the night, about how he had killed countless already, and planned to put thousands more under the sword. And, of course, every new person that ran to the inn from the west was put to the question--loudly. And Kerin had to admit that even she was somewhat intrigued. In this time of civil war and famine in the land, who would be able to take so much of the attention for themselves? Only one about to save the land. Or destroy it. Which was he? And what methods was he willing to use to see his goals fulfilled? And whom did he really serve? These were questions that she wanted answered.
So she walked out to her horse, had it saddled quickly, and was riding again within the half hour. East.
She had left the Tower quickly. She wasn't really sure where she was going when she had left, only that she was going, and that she was going alone. Her meeting with Damien, while it had gone well, had not left her well-enough convinced that he was his own man, and she was sick of seeing men at the Tower that were there to "follow the Light!" and "serve the Aes Sedai!" when . . . all they really needed to do right now was what was RIGHT . . . and the Tower wasn't doing that at all. She had a horrible feeling about the whole thing, and she was sick of sitting around in it, doing nothing. Perhaps someday, she would find that man, the one who would do what needed to be done, even if it meant going brother against brother.
She hadn't been riding all that long, perhaps only two hours, when two men appeared on the road in front of her, riding towards her. Heavily armed. Sword poked up above each shoulder, and bows hung on their saddles. Knowing that it was a time of war did not make her feel any safer about it . . . there had not been any open battles in this area yet, and she did not want to suddenly be in the middle of one. She embraced the Power swifly, curling a hundred threads around her in preparedness. And, to her puzzlement, they stopped, staring at her less than twenty yards away, hands loose on their reins.
"You are Aes Sedai," one man declared. This took her by surprise. She was wearing her ring, yes, but under her riding gloves! And she had no other features to distinguish her as one . . . other than the fact that she was holding the Power.
So she did the only thing that she could. She gathered more saidar into herself, pulling in as much as she could possibly handle--which was quite a bit. She was one of the strongest at the Tower, and knew it. Channeling minutely, the wind began to pick up around them, and pushed at the two men in her way. "Please, step aside. I have no wish to fight," she said.
"Oh, but Sister," one said, his voice a rasping hiss. "We do."
She swallowed hard, then felt it like a slap upside the head--the presence of Shadowspawn. Her eyes flew to the side, and there stood three figures--one man, wrapped entirely in black, the hood of his robe down across his face. His hands were held loosely at his side, his fingertips barely visible through the folds of his robes, and even they were encased in black leather. To each side of him stood a Myrddraal, terrible and fascinating, staring at her with their eyeless gazes. Fear froze her to the spot, paralyzing her with raw terror. Saidar burned through it after a moment, and she was able to drag her eyes away.
"Who are you, what do you want?" she demanded, summoning more and more of the Power to her. To the point where it was like a needle pressed against the skin, soon to break through and draw blood.
"We want . . . you," the black figure said. His voice stirred memories in the back of her head, but which she could not say. She merely knew that he was out to kill her then, and attacked, throwing a wall of air down the road to unhorse the two men. To her horror, it ended long before it reached them, and the wind around them reversed direction, suddenly pounding her from all sides. Her horse reared up in fear, dropping her from the saddle.
She hit the ground hard, but managed to keep a slim grasp on saidar as she clawed her way to her feet, the wind still pounding her. She could hear feet beating the ground as they approached her rapidly, and threw up her hands, channeling as fiercely as she ever had.
Whip-thin tendrils of fire raced out, wrapping around one man's head and beheading him, the other shooting straight through the second's eye. She twisted to the side, using her sense now to feel the Myrddraal approaching, one from each side. As she raised her hands to blow back the wind, a fist of air slammed into her middle, blowing her backwards, and her threads warped, instead of stopping the wind now, increasing the maelstrom. The fist raced up her body into her chin, blowing her backwards while lights exploded in front of her eyes so she landed on her back hard, panting for a moment to catch her breath.
She was never able to. A noose of air slipped around her neck and lifted her, choking and gasping, to her feet. The black figure appeared out of the grey and brown dust rising thickly around them, and she attacked the thread around her neck with all of her ebbing strength. Again and again she cut it, and again and again it returned, tighter than before, threatening to cut her air supply off for good. Then, as she weakened, she felt it . . . the shield, sliding slowly but surely inbetween her and the Source. Wildly, she attacked it, even as black spots began to dance in her vision and her feet twitched uncontrolably in the air. She knew she was dying, and yet . . .
The shield clicked into place, and the fight left her, sagging into the noose, feeling blackness close in on her for the last time . . . she had lost.

"Who is she?"
"Never you mind that. Just make sure she awakes soon, and when she does, give her this to drink."
"Of course, I shall."
Kerin began pulling herself back up to the light, the sound. It was like swimming through mud, pulling one's self through endless muck and mire. As she finally gained the surface, she coughed, realizing that she was breathing through a very painful throat. She coughed again, and a blond, pretty woman leaned over her. Pain filled Kerin's every pore at the moment, her head pounding from the lack of oxygen earlier, her stomach and ribs, back and throat throbbing from the beating she had taken.
"Rest easy, now," the blond woman whispered. She dapped a cool cloth on Kerin's head, ran it down across her cheek. When it touched her neck, Kerin moaned, turning her head to the side, tryign to raise her hand to ward her off. Her neck hurt so very badly. Her eyes squeezed shut as she resisted the urge to cry, but then a mug was being pressed to her lips, and an arm wrapped around her shoulders to lift her up enough to drink. And drink she did. A warm tea filled her mouth, a bit minty. It wasn't until after she had finished that she realized . . . she was going numb . . . forkroot . . .
***
Sophia looked up as the woman passed out again. The black man was standing in the corner. He had taken to being with them more often now. Not that she minded. Of course she didn't. But his presence was odd, and tickled the back of her mind continuously. "I gave her the tea," she reported dutifully.
"I can see that," the black man grated, his voice heavy with scorn. "Or did you think I had gone blind?"
"Blind? Of course not," Sophia said. "I was merely--"
"Be silent," he said harshly, and Sophia fell silent almost immediately. It was a very reasonable request, afterall. Of course he could have seen that she had given the Aes Sedai the tea. She sat back, folding her hands in her lap, looking down at herself. She was wearing a very scandalous dress, in her opinion. The neckline sweeping far too low, but . . . HE liked it. So he got it. She wasn't sure why. But she loved him, right?
"Yes," the man in black said, and laughed a bit. "Yes, she will do amazingly well. When she awakes again, tell her that I wish to see her."
"Of course," Sophia said, rising to curtsy as the black man swept from the room.
In the back of her mind, Sophia screamed in anguish. Not another woman falling to this . . . not another . . .

Re: New Trinket
Indra looked out her window to see dawn slowly brighten the sky. She had been up for hours. She could not sleep and the reasons for that were too horrifying to remember. Ranine was on to something he should not even be aware. What that is she had no idea although she made it clear she was in control of the situation. Her lie had been feeble at best and now she paid for it. Wincing as she rotated her shoulder Indra kept her eyes on the horizon. The entire right side of her body was slightly burned although she would only be able to see the redness on her arm. The tingling of skin was to remind her that dreams of death were as real as her mistress wanted them to be.
A tightness in her chest made her stop all thoughts of what happened in her dreams. Now was not the time to panic. If she did nothing would get done and then she would be dead.
A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts and she schooled her features as she watched the woman walk in without an invitation. Mina walked in her room as if she had a right to everything in it. The Saldaean had not been heard from in weeks. The stupid woman ignored every summons so far and now Indra was not sure she could trust if she was on her side any longer. "My lady I have word." Indra frowned, her hand balling into a fist. "Now you wish to report to me?" Her tone was curt but calm. Her words were only met with a determined stare from her maid. Indra glared at her, "What news do you have?" "Ranine's men brought some woman in the other night. She...." Indra went to the woman and slapped her so hard her head jerked to the side. "You came to me with this? That is not news. I am not surprised the Light ugly man has not kidnapped dozens of women! Sophia is the only one who can stomach him. The docile cow must have bored him enough to take some other unwilling sort he saw on the street." "I am not done." Mina said calmly although her eyes were filled with anger. Indra raised her hand to slap her again but stopped when she noticed the woman did not flinch. "My lady, I was near enough to see they took her to Sophia. She is Aes Sedai." "Do not lie to me Mina, why would Ranine need an Aes Sedai?" A frown crossed the pretty woman's face as if she tired of Indra's questions. "I don't know my lady no more was spoken after I heard that. They left the woman to Sophia to watch." "Then I suggest you go back before you are found missing. Found out all you can about the Aes Sedai. Make sure you are the only servant helping Sophia with her. I will be here for another fortnight before I make my trip. You will report to me daily." Mina's arm jerked suddenly and the woman stared at Indra in surprise. "Remember that when you get it into your head to defy me. Leave me now." Mina hurried out the room and when the door was closed Indra went to her bed and laid down.
Staring at the ceiling she thought of a way to get to Voclas. He hated her and would not be so easy to get rid of. But the message from her dream was very clear. She had to take back was stolen and she only had two weeks to do so. She would have the Aes Sedai help her and if Mina proved useful she would kidnap the woman and make her help.

Re: New Trinket
Ranine patted the paper that was neatly tucked into his pocket. This map was going to make sure that Indra was under his thumb once and for all. Voclas was worth his weight in gold, and Ranine intended to show him that.
According to what Voclas had said, this was a map to a very powerful peice of glass. Supposedly only women could use it and it would give them the power over anyone they wanted. Supposedly the last person to use it made her lover do some things that love alone could not.
And now with his latest toy, he could put Indra away without her ever knowing. All he had to do was find it.

Re: New Trinket
Night held meaning. Darkness held vision. There was much to be learned from the night, sitting in the dark, no light to tamper with nature's true order. There was light, yes, but it was artificial, created, made to ease the mind of men. But to some, those with the true ability to understand, darkness, the true essence of the universe, was everywhere . . . it held all the secrets, all the power, all the knowledge. Bound to darkness, one could do great things. Bound with darkness, one WAS great.
Ksathra was bound with darkness.
The land thought him dead, gone, destroyed by the fools that followed their precious "Light."
The Shadow was all there was to Ksathra's existence. Hanging in that single moment between life and annihalation, seeing the balefire ripping through his future, destroy his destiny, Ksathra had found comfort in the knowledge that he would exist now, only as a shadow, a lingering thought.
And he had escaped. Become one with the darkness and borne upon the wings of the dragh'kar themselves to the Pit of Doom, where he recieved his true education. Learned how to really use the Powers he had been granted. Seen firsthand the blessings of the Shadow.
He opened his ice-blue eyes in the darkness and could see easily. He knew where everything was, how everything sat, where things lay . . . even though his eyes were about worthless. Seared by the intent heat of the balefire, he had lost most of his vision. A handicap that had yet to even slow him.
He rose from his place in the darkness and stepped through the shadows, through the realm of the unreal, and into his new servant's place within the world of light and noise. "Ranine." His voice was soft and low, but carried an undercurrent of power unlike any other's voice could. "We need to talk. I have brought you a . . . gift."

Re: New Trinket
Ranine had known something wasn't right. He had the feeling like he was being watched, and yet he couldn't see anyone. Until the blind man had come back. The man that had given him everything, and yet asked for it all.
"You do pick odd times for an audience, but I appreciate your discretion," Ranine said, trying to see calm. In reality being in this man's presence set chills down his spine. He hated being in his sleeping clothes, an odd habit he had picked up lately. Anything less then an army wouldn't even slow this man.
"What can I do for the man who has given me everything?"

Ksathra smiled behind his low-pulled hood. Though his vision was damaged, the shadows let him see as if there was nothing wrong. They let him see even more. Into the hearts of men, feel what they felt . . . Ranine was nervous around Ksathra, and Ksathra liked it.
"You have in your possession a map. To an item of great power. I have given you the ability to use what you have found. A person that will obey you, as Sophia obeys you. She will do anything for you that you ask of her. But do not abuse her." Ksathra had other ideas for certain types of "abuse" for Kerin . . . she had been an annoyance to him before and if what the Shadows said was true . . . then she still was, with her "gifts."
"Send her to get you your item. She will bring it to you, and use it for you, to spread your might, your power." Ksathra leaned forward, the black abyss of his hood paling a bit as light tried to curl inside of it . . .but was repelled by Ksathra's power. "All I want . . . is the map to the matching object. For every item of great power for the women, there is one for men. Find me that other map."

Re: New Trinket
"As you wish," Ranine said, overjoyed at the thought. Now he definitly had a step up on that girl and her games. All for a simple map! It would be all he needed.
Now, to find a way to make her seem to be helping him.
Mina loked down the hall for a longtime. The towels she held in her arms were not heavy but she felt as if she was weighed down anyway. Ever since she had started her living here in Cairhien she felt she was being watched. By who or what she could not name but she was sure beyond a doubt she would eb summoned again. Her master had been missing for months and Mina was more then ready if she came calling again.
A sigh escaped her as she squared her shoulders as she put one foot in front of the other. She had to continue working for Indra it was the only way to find out what she was up to. She was pretty sure she had an idea of what the slag wanted but more information was always good. She hurried down the hall and quietly taped on Sophia's door. She knew the Aes Sedai would be with her today. Sophia was more trusted by Ranine then anyone he kept around him. Mina was curious about it but did not need to end up dead just so she would know. He is probably sweet on the simpering fool A sneer crossed her face before her blank expression was forced back. The door swung open slowly and Sophia peered out at her. "I have brought fresh towels my lady." Sophia gave her a strange look and would have taken the towels but Mina hurried in slightly pushing the woman and the door wide enough to squeeze in. She hurried over to the cabinet and placed the towels on it all the while looking for the Aes Sedai. "Is there anything else you need form me my lady?"

Re: New Trinket
Sophia gave the new intruder a raised brow in answer to her concern. She hadn't requested more towels. She hadn't wanted more towels.. Or was it Ranine that hadn't wanted any more towels? She could never be certain. His will was her will, of course. That was the way it was supposed to be. The way that she had been made, the way all things fit together in the seamless symphony of life.
"No," she said at long last, yet firmly, with resolve. "I need nothing from you.. please leave us, I am to watch her." She turned her back on the servant, fully expecting her to be gone, as she turned back to the young woman before her, her charge. More of the tea was sitting nearby, close at hand for whenever the woman awoke. Why Sophia was to give her the tea was somewhat of a blur. She only remembered, very vividly, that she was to give it to the young woman. Failure to do so was simply unimaginable. Failure would mean failure to please Ranine.. she broke out in a worried frown at the mere thought. Ranine...
TRISTAN
The name exploded through her brain like a lightning strike, leaving her dazed for a moment, blinking back the sudden rush of tears. Inwardly she screamed, thrashing at her bounds which were wrapped around her so tightly, and for once were felt, were there. She raised a shaking hand as if to touch these binding cords of power, as if to feel their electric effect. Then she blinked, and looked at her hand, hanging in the air before her. What was she doing, acting a fool? What would Ranine say if he walked in, seeing her pointing a slim finger at nothing? She turned back, noticing the servant still there. "On second thought.. perhaps some food."
***
Kerin drifted behind the veil of conciousness, keeping her eyes closed and her breathing slow and shallow, even to keep up the illusion of sleep. She knew not why.. her ears felt as if they were plugged with cotton, the voices in the room muted and sounding as if from far away. There was no energy in her body. She tried to make a fist, to curl her fingers, to find to her dismay that her fingers simply would not, could not, listen and obey. Every ounce of her body felt as if it weighed a hundred pounds, pushing her down into the bed upon which she rested. Every slow breath felt as if it was being pulled against a tidal wave. And yet.. it was getting easier, slowly. The weight was slowly lifting. Sound was slowly coming in sharper, more coherent.
And she knew... she had to wait for Ranine. He would tell her where to go, where to escape this feeling, how to avoid being this way. He would give her a task.. yes, that was it! A task to complete, and she would be free of this heavy drowsiness, the plugged sensation that infested her very core. If only he would hurry and come to her, then she could be better. Yes.. he needed to hurry.. hurry.... hurry.....

Re: New Trinket
Mina watched Sophia very closely. Her mannerisms seemed to change for a minute or two before her attention went back to the Aes Sedai. She did not know why but it suddenly made her feel sad for the woman. Mina was sure Ranine had done something her. He had to for her to be such a simpering dog around him. What that thing was she had no clue and at the moment it was none of her concern.
Her gaze went to the Aes Sedai and she even inched forward a little to get a better look. The woman was completely out of it. Indra would not be happy to hear her little bargining chip was some young fool who may have just been raised to the shawl. Of course agelessness may have set in but Mina was certain the woman was very young. Finished with her study she curtsied to a preoccupied Sophia and hurried out of the room. Her report to Indra will be full of nothing and she had no idea what the woman really wanted to hear but she would say anything and everything just to keep her life.

Re: New Trinket
Ranine strode quickly into Sophia's room, only to find a maid there. It was something he did not wish to deal with right now. It was nearly enough to enrage him to the point of blows.
"What are you doing lingering here," he snapped, just short of yelling. "You heard Sophia, she wats food, you will bring it now!"
Ranine grabbed her by the arm, much harded then needed, and escorted her to the door before tossing her into the hall and slamming the door. He had work to do.
"Girl, wake up," he muttered softly, standing near the bed. "I have a task for you."
If Ksathra hadn't been so adament about this task, Ranine might have considered some pleasure before business.

Re: New Trinket
Sophia smiled brightly as Ranine came in. It was the sun dawning on a new day, the golden rays from a sweet sun. The rage on his face did not affect her, nor did it when he threw the maid from the room, almost. She grinned after the maid, calling out "Fish and chips, please!" before the door slammed close.
"Ranine, my heart," she cooed, sliding over to him, placing a hand on his chest. He ignored her, speaking instead to the sleeping girl, who awoke almost immediately to his voice, and rose to her feet. Her eyes were still dull and glazed with the tea Sophia had fed her. Sophia frowned at her. She was intruding on her time with Ranine. She wanted him to pay attention to her. She purred in his ear to show him she was still there.
"Master? What would you wish of me?" the girl asked, staring with uninterested unfocus at the floor, the walls.. whatever was before her slightly swaying posture. Sophia shot her a glare, nipping the edge of Ranine's ear in her teeth. Perhaps he would be done with her soon. Yes.. that would be nice.
