New games My PSX backlog is down to 8 games, including Tony Hawk 1, which I just kind of got bored with after getting about half the tapes. I started Skullmonkeys, and have been playing that every now and again (in between Mars Matrix sessions). Anyway, for PSX I bought Dragon Warrior 7 and FF IX. I don't plan on starting either one any time soon, but I bought them because I felt like buying some games. I hear DW 7 is really long. I wonder if it's mostly filler gameplay. People either seem to love it or hate it, but the things people complain about are things that I don't mind, like lots of fighting for gold, dated graphics, what have you. As for FF IX, well, I'm trying to become a FF connoisseur of sorts, I guess (although X sounds lame to me, on par with MGS 2). I don't mind playing them for the sole purpose of giving myself the right to complain about them For PS 2 I bought Onimusha, since it's cheap now. Hopefully this Christmas I can get in some good PS 2 times. I even bought an X-Box game! It's Totalled, a smash up derby game. I've had this thing for demolition derbies since I was a little kid, and the cars remind me of the Smash Up Derby toy set I used to have. If GameFAQs holds its annual "Top 10" contest this december, I will win it and use the gift certificate to buy an X-Box and Gamecube. |

Re: New games
Well, I still think Final Fantasy X is one of the most entertaining in the series. While it's lacking in replay value, it does far surpass the PSX FF games, especially FFIX, in both story and gameplay, IMO.
Dragon Warrior VII is one of the less impressive games in the series, IMO. A big let-down after the spectacular DQVI, the actually made the graphics look worse (less colorful and detailed). I only made it about 15 hours into the game, and basically nothing of too much importance happens. You just go from dungeon to dungeon solving minor problems. The class change supposedly doesn't even occur until several dozen hours into the game. As for my new games, as I've said elsewhere, I just ordered a load of GameCube stuff along with the system, of course. It'll be enough to last probably for months, and give me stuff to write new reviews with as well. I'm most excited about playing Mario: Sunshine, Rogue Squadron II, and Eternal Darkness, but there's several other games. And I didn't buy anything I didn't expect to like a whole lot. Don't want to get my hopes up too high, but I'm thinking I may enjoy many of these games more than most of what I have for the PS2. |

I LOVE FO! Well, I wouldn't recommend FF9 to someone who would actually want to love it, but since that's not your goal at all, I won't bother trying to dissuade you from it. But I didn't hate the game, so... Well, I think my opinion on this game is already well-known. It seems to me more people hate Dragon Warrior 7 than love it, but my experience is necessarily annecdotal. I hear it didn't sell very well, though. Skullmonkeys didn't seem like much to me. I don't know how far I got on my trial run, maybe halfway through it. It just seemed like a generic platformer. I'd suppose Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3 would be much better (especially DKC2). I wonder how big my PSX backlog is. Twenty games? More? Eh, well, I'll get around to them whenever. At the time I bought them, I just wanted to have them so I wouldn't have to track them down later. Today, my gaming was mostly limited to Zanac, which I seem to enjoy more each time I play. Kind of like losing the Mr. Dream fight in PunchOut!!!, you can get set way back in Zanac towards the end of the game. It might seem annoying (the PSX remake doesn't do this, but I prefer the real NES version generally) but it does force you to get good there. As for new games for myself, the only thing I have coming is Ikaruga. While I'd like Devil May Cry, I'd have to get a new system for that. Super Mario Sunshine sounds interesting to me... if it really is challenging. I have doubts it'd be as challenging as, say, MDK2. But who knows. And we have a Game Cube. What's the annual top ten thing? I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

I LOVE FO! I was out and about today, and at Best Buy I noticed that Devil May Cry is now a Greatest hits game (they didn't have the price on it, though). So, maybe I'll get it even though I don't yet have a PS2. As for other new games, I kind of want Arc the Lad collection. I think that would probably be one of the last, if not the last, new PSX games I'd get. (Oh, and I also saw Alien Trilogy today at funco, in those book sized cases, but didn't get it) I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

Re: I LOVE FO! The only thing that worries me about Super Mario Sunshine from what I've heard so far is that it's another "collecting" game. I didn't mind that for Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, but I'm getting tired of that being the crux of most 3D platformers. Crawl and 1000 ![]()

Games Well, you could buy Devil May Cry and read the manual for several months As for the top 10 thing, for the last 3 years, at the end of the year, GameFAQs has a contest in which you have to pick the top 10 games in terms of hits on its FAQ. If it's held this year, I'm going to win. You're right in that Skullmonkeys is pretty generic. I'm not hot to play it much, but it's worth a few half hour stints a week. At least it's challenging. I think I'm at about stage 10 of 17. I'm still playing Mars Matrix mainly. (My total score is over 300 trillion.) I don't like collecting objectives much, either, unless the collecting comes as a consequence of a greater goal. FOr example, in SM 64, some coins were gotten by performing some feat, whether it be beating a boss, getting to a hard to reach area, etc. But in Blast Corps, you jsut had to drive around and light up 100 lights in each stage, simply for the fact that you had to light up 100 lights. That's kind of lame. |

I LOVE FO! Oh, and another thing about Super Mario Sunshine I've gathered from EGM's reviews is that the camera is still (I think the term they used was) lethargic. I guess most people can overlook something like that in favor of everything else in a game, but things like that can really rub me the wrong way. I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!

Re: I LOVE FO! Yeah, I don't see why you can't always just have the camera directly behind the character like in MDK2 or Shadow Man. Crawl and 1000 ![]()

Re: I LOVE FO! Also, I think my enjoyment of Super Mario Sunshine may be depend on how "minigame-like" the goals are. In Banjo-Kazooie, my least favorite jigsaws to collect were the ones you had to win by beating mini-games, such as Boggy's sled races and the Crocodile Eating game. I don't mind the ones where you have to beat a boss or solve a puzzle or race through a maze, or something like that, but I can't stand mini-games. Actually, I hope that isn't too confusing, because it may seem like almost any feat performed to get a jigsaw could be like a "minigame", but some feats are just more "minigame-ish" than others. Also, I'm gonna really despise this game being called "SMS" for short, because whenever I see those initials used in game-related terms, I immediately think of the Sega Master System. Re:
I still think SM64 has an excellent camera myself, one of the best out of all the 3D platformers I've played. All I do is keep it zoomed out, and that's good enough for almost everything. When needed, I just rotate it to the left or right. Super Mario Sunshine doesn't have as good of a camera, IMO. It does let you adjust it more, though. You can zoom it in and out and rotate it in any direction with the C-stick. The L button centers it behind Mario like in Zelda:OoT, and there's also a button to see things from Mario's perspective to look all around you.
I don't think SM64 has much of a "collecting feel", as opposed to say, a game like DKC3. Super Mario Sunshine is no different. There's 120 shines just like the 120 stars in SM64. The objectives are about the same too. You fight bosses, solve puzzles, get to hard-to-reach places, collect 8 red coins for a shine, etc. It is in all ways very much a Super Mario 64 2, except with a very different feel and an increased challenge. I personally found SM64's difficulty perfectly adequate, though. It took me a couple weeks to beat the game, and much longer to find all the stars. ![]() Fear it! |

Re: Re: I'm actually really glad to hear that it's more of a sequel to Mario 64 than another complete alteration to the series. I'm unusually excited about trying this one... I guess I still tend to get that way when a big name series gets another sequel. |

Re: Re: I got Mario Sunshine, and I love what I've played of it so far. But I haven't touched it since I got Animal Crossing. That game is deceptively engrossing and entertaining. I also rented the New Madden NFL and NFL 2k3 football games for GameCube not too long ago. I fully expected to enjoy 2K3 more since I loved the series on Dreamcast but haven't played a Madden game since Genesis/SNES. Sorry Sega, but Madden just grabbed me more. Now if only I could figure out how to save my file corrstly in it (so many lost Madden cards due to improper saves). For what it's worth, I have the Arc the Lad collection. I'm not exactly the authority on RPGs, but I played through Arc 1, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. -'Tamer ![]() ![]() "Young lady, stars shine only in the sky, and stars which fall to earth never shine again." --Anubis, Dark Warlord of Cruelty |

I LOVE FO! So, are you feeling less disillusioned with console gaming now? I don't know if I'd say I'm disillusioned, but lately my interests have been a little more in other things than gaming. But things like that wax and wane. The thing I might be most interested in regarding Animal Crossing would be the NES games... but I would have to wonder if I'd just be better off buying the NES games I'd want rather than some $50+ Game Cube game (especially since the NES game on Animal Crossing that sounds like the best one on there would be PunchOut!!!, which I already own) I LOOOOOOVE Flying Omelette!!
