Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this, or if its presumptuous of me to bring it up, but I'm having an issue with the board organization: I'm not sure what posts belong where. For instance, what's the difference between Member Application and Member Introduction? Or should there be roleplays on the General Discussion board or should they be on the Roleplay board, and if they are on the Roleplay board, what is the purpose of the General Discussion board?
Now, I'm not one to mention a problem without also suggesting a possible solution or two. Assuming that threads can be easily moved, I think a set-up along these lines might be more user friendly:
Discussion Areas
- Roleplay (IC stories and member introductions)
- General Discussion (OOC organization for roleplays, supergroup roster, and announcements)
- Database (OOC game mechanics, links, etc.)
- Real Life Discussions (OOC regarding non-game issues) Officer/Admin Area
- Officer Discussion
- Polls
- Board Administration Forum
- Help Files
- Archives
This would combine several boards in each heading, but provide a clearer idea of what belongs in each area.
The Roleplay Forum would cover the current roleplay, member application, and member introduction forums as well as some of the general discussion threads.
The General Discussion Forum would include the current administrative (announcement) forum and the rest of the general discussion threads.
The Database Forum would contain questions forum and links.
The Real Life Forum would be just the real life forum we have now.
Of course, I'm not sure if threads can be moved. If they can't or if it would be a major hassle, then my proposed solution wouldn't work. In that case, perhaps moving the location of a couple forums (member access formus in one area, officer/administrator access forums in another) and clearly labeling each forum as IC or OOC and modifying forum descriptions to reflect their intended purpose.
Like I posted the story on the General. That's just me. Usually we will post in character so it is kind of hard to distinguish something roleplaying with SG stuff.
Your suggestions are solid, and I agree with most of them - except I feel that "Member Introduction" and "Roleplay" should be separate sections, and General should come before Roleplay - but they may be moot, as we're considering something a little more drastic. More once I have something more solid to tell you.
Re: OOC: Board Organization
Member Application is for someone wanting to join the Project to express their interest (either ICly, OOCly, or both). It's then for communication between the applicant and the officers.
Member Introduction is for people to tell stories that highlight their characters that *have already become* members. Basically a way to let everyone know a bit more about all these characters that make up the Project.
General goes back and forth on IC and OOC, depending on how the first post starts off, so far as I've seen. In theory, the RP forum should be for IC threads to RP back and forth, but I've seen that in General as well.
Re: OOC: Board Organization
I was worried about the IC/OOC line, which seems to be grounds for souring of many roleplay guilds. P:R members have a damn varied idea of what is roleplayed and what isn't, or where, or when.
However-
P:R has the most tolerant, nice roleplayers I have ever seen assembled. I"ve yet to see someone called to task for speaking IC'ly or OOC'ly in game or in forums. Usually it is smoothed over with genuine, honest good relationship.
On the same subject, I was remarking recently that when someone needs a group, there's always a nasty fight. Everyone wants to be the one that drops out of group to let their friend in! Now that, is refreshing.
Re: OOC: Board Organization
Am I allowed to post that you guys are really weird?
I think P:R is more casual than many RP guilds, which is cool. Some nights, I'm able to RP more intensely than others. And like Solaron, I post wherever.
Re: OOC: Board Organization
Nothing wrong with organization... A place for everything and everything in it's place!
For me, general discussion could be a mix of both IC and OOC. Member applications are up to the applicant as to whether they are IC or OOC. And Roleplay should be IC only. Posting whatever and wherever only makes it harder to keep track of threads we may want to follow.
