Our Power Animals
Do you know your power animal and how to call on them to assist you in life? Some come in forms unknown in this world but will usually have atleast a part of them that is familiar to you. As most of you know, mine is a dual animal... Wolf and Eagle together who can be as one or seperate into two animals... if need be he can transform into man.
Here's a list of some of the more common power animals and their meanings. I hope this list will help a few to understand their power animals a little better.
Bear - Hibernation is a key attribute of the bear. Having a bear as your power animal indicates the need to go within yourself - to withdraw from the world to find your answers. Your dream time is extremely important.
Buffalo - The buffalo is the most sacred animal in Native American traditions. It represents the Great Spirit manifested. Having this as your power animal indicates the importance of sharing and caring for all.
Butterfly - The butterfly represents transformation and the ability to accept change.
Cougar - This mountain lion provides the power of leadership and encourages you to take responsibility for your life.
Crocodile - The crocodile is best known for it's "crocodile tears." With this power animal you will need to address your emotional nature, making sure that you display them appropriately and accurately.
Coyote - The jackal helps you to recognize your own mistakes and to laugh at yourself.
Crow - This animal indicates the need to find balance and to stay in the present and will bring to you the ability to release past beliefs.
Deer - Gentleness is the key word here. The deer represents kindness and compassion.
Dolphin - Life breath and communication is the essence of the dolphin. The dolphin will also help you with interpreting your dreams.
Dragon - The Dragon represents prosperity. This may be of spiritual (intuition) rather than materiaal riches, because the dragon was regarded as the guaridian of treasure that lay hidden deep within the unconscious and was hard to obtain.
Eagle - The eagle is your connection with your Soul. It helps you to see beyond the mundane to your higher purpose.
Elephant- The sense of smell is very important and is a symbol for the importance of learning discernment. Also, elephants show great affection and loyalty. Those with this power animal will be given the opportunity to establish powerful family ties by caring for the young, the elderly and the sick.
Ferret - See the Weasel definition.
Fox - This animal respresents patience - the ability to wait for the right moment to act.
Frog - The frog will teach you how to jump from materialism to spirituality.
Hawk - The hawk represents the ability to see meaning in ordinary experiences and helps you to become more observant.
Horse - The horse will teach you how to communicate with other realms as well as this one. It is the message carrier.
Hummingbird - This creature represents the joy of living and brings with it the ability to see beauty in everything.
Lion - The lion represents wisdom and power. It brings to you the abilities of heart-centered leadership.
Lizard - The lizard brings into your awareness your subconscious hopes and fears so that through the light of day they can be acknowledged.
Mouse - The mouse helps you to notice the little things in life - all of those details you previously overlooked and to be ever alert to those things going on around you.
Owl - The owl represents wisdom and gives you the ability to see things that are normally hidden from view - like the motives of others so that you won't be deceived.
Raven - This is the messenger. The raven indicates that you need to make changes in the way you perceive things and gives you the ability to see what has to be changed.
Snake - This animal gives you the ability to let go of things that are worn out and no longer useful - just like the snake sheds it skin when it is no longer needed.
Spider - The spider represents creativity and the weaving of fate. Everything you do in the present will help determine your future. The past always influences the present and the future. It also teaches the need to maintain balance between the past and the future.
Squirrel - The squirrel encourages you to develop the ability to plan ahead and to anticipate your future needs, to be prepared.
Swan - The swan gives you the ability to handle change and transformation with grace and dignity.
Tiger - The tiger represents passion and sensuality. The sense of touch is heightened with the tiger as a power animal. The tiger also brings forth silent, solitary, power.
Turtle - The turtle gives groundedness. It imparts to you the ability to keep your feet on the ground and pay attention to earthly things.
Unicorn - This magical animal gives you the ability to make your dreams come true.
Weasel - This animal imparts the ability to see beneath the surface of things to what the actual intent and meaning is. The weasel also encourages you to develop your sense of inner hearing and to pay attention to your inner voice.
Whale - The whale gives you the ability to know the wisdom of the ages - from the time before time.
Wolf - The wolf represents your inner teacher. It will help you to find your life path.

Re: Our Power Animals
Wonderful, WingedWolf...thank you. I have known for some time now that one of my two main power animals is the cougar (which is why I am so taken with the graphic on this page)...but I learned it was a guardian of secrets. Have you heard anything about this?
My other power animals thus far are the hawk, the dolphin, the deer, the whale, the squirrel and the mouse. No wonder I'm insane...kindness, knowledge of time before time, planning for what I need, and small details! All in the big picture...lol.

Re: Our Power Animals
Sorry for being neglectful, it's that time of year again and I've been as busy as all get out.
There are lots of ways to find a spirit guide and they don't have to involve the multi-day Native American vision quest. If you meditate or journey, ask to meet your spirit guide. Be open to whatever animal comes, but when doing this or working with others to do it, I wait until I've seen the same animal three times, then ask it if it is your power animal. Your power animal will be open to letting you know if it is or is not. You might like to be in nature when you do this.
Many Native American cultures use the vision quest to find animal guides, although vision quests are used for many purposes throughout the world. Each culture has their own tratitions but vision quests tend to range from one night to three spent alone in nature and frequently involve at least one day of fasting or eating only fruit.
Many people have success gazing into water (natural bodies work best but a dark colored bowl or mug work too) or fire (a campfire is best but candles are often more practicle). If you want to try this, ask your power animal to show some sign of itself. Remember that your animal guide is an individual, sentient being, so when an animal presents itself to you, ask if it is your power animal. If you meet it in a meditation and it says no, you can ask it to bring you to your power animal. If it can't, then keep looking. No matter what method you try, seeing three different images of the same type of animal or seeing the same animal from four dirrections is a sign that it is willing to work with you more closely at this time.
If none of these work, let me know and we'll go from here.

Re: Our Power Animals
Gaia, what an awesome job you are doing on the individual animal posts that follow! But don't please don't wait too long to do the otter and the deer. The otter is my favorite (neck and neck with cats) and a very good friend told me she associated me with a deer, so I am really anxious to see those.

Re: Our Power Animals
Hi Nar, so sorry for being so danged neglectful here.. body is poo-poo this time of year.
Here's your otter hon:
Otter - Otter is receptive, playful, and free of jealousy. As both women and men begin to express the highest qualities of this medicine the world can become a joyful place where all can play without fear of harm or loss. Otter's Wisdom Includes:
Sensibility without suspicion
Guidance in unmasking talents
Psychic awareness
Faithfulness
Understanding the value of playtime
Here's your deer:
Deer (Abhach) or Stag (Sailetheach):
In its form of the white doe or white stag, the deer was often a messenger and guide from the Otherworld. Following such an animal led the unsuspecting human into contact with supernatural beings. The antlered headdress of Cernunnos is a symbol of the stags stature. The deer represents keen scent, grace, swiftness, and gentleness. These are the ways of reaching our goals without using force.
Gentleness in word, thought and touch
Ability to listen
Grace and appreciation for the beauty of balance
Understanding of what's necessary for survival
Power of gratitude and giving
Ability to sacrifice for the higher good
Connection to the woodland goddess
Alternative paths to a goal

Thanks Gaia, this has been one of the worst winters ever for me.. I'll sure be glad when spring comes around.
I know you'll do the deer and otter info like you did the others, but I thought this would atleast give Nar a quick info fix in the mean time. Great job on this thread by the way!!!

Re: Our Power Animals
According to this site which I followed the link to from an earlir part of this thread
www.crystalinks.com/totemanimals.html
My Totem animal appears to be a Snake, not what i would have expected. Personally Id have expected a cat due to the 'ability' I have with them.
Any thoughts folks?

Re: Our Power Animals
Manda, the picture you have up is a lynx.Maybe that will help.
Valenstar, your totem animal can make itself known to you, sometimes through dreams, sometimes by appearing to you in visions, and sometimes by making itself seen to you under normally odd circumstances.
For instance, every time I have a buzzard fly over me(and it hasnt mattered where I live,or or what I'm doing, that happens to me quite a bit),something good happens.I walked out my back door one day,and had a whole flock of them within 20 feet of me,on the ground. They sat for a while, and then flew off.My heart soared at the site of them, but that day was the day I found out from my sister that she was going to be able to come pick me up and take me to her house for a week(we live pretty far from each other).I meditated on it and sure enough, one came to me during meditation, sat in front of me,and spoke with me for a while. So,dont worry,if your totem animal is a snake,it will let you know.
