Pinwheel Project
The PEACC center at the university where I work is sponsoring a "Pinwheel Project," where a pinwheel is placed in front of a favorite student gathering-spot to honor those who have survived domestic violence and/or sexual abuse/violence. It was a kick-off event for "Take Back the Night." TBTN originated in Europe when the women decided they were tired of feeling afraid on the streets at night. The women got together and lit candles to show that they were together en masse and ready to make the statement that they would no longer be controlled by fear. We also have TBTN each year at the university.
I was lucky to be asked by a co-worker if I had anyone I wanted to place a pinwheel for. She and I went together and placed 140 pinwheels in front of the SAC to make the statement that this is a wide-spread problem. This project is near and dear to both our hearts and it felt really good to be able to be a part of it. We both felt sad, as well, when she commented that all the pinwheels that lined the walkway weren't nearly enough for all those who have been and are victims of this heinous evil; sadder still for those who did not survive. We placed our 140 pinwheels together to show the "legion" of those who have felt the pain of domestic/sexual violence. And still it was not enough. But it was our part and we were both happy to do it.
I intend to place a pinwheel each year for as long as it takes (which will probably be my lifetime) to stop such evil behavior, to make tougher laws against the perpetrators, whatever it takes. Believe me, I have learned that just because we survive the horror doesn't mean the problem is gone. I intend to do all I can in this fight, even if it means simply acknowledging that I, too, am a statistic.
For a while today, I felt like the Glowbug!
