Plans for talks between Cypriot leaders suspended..........
Plans for talks between Cypriot leaders suspended over soccer dispute

ANKARA, Turkey: Turkish Cypriots on Thursday suspended plans to meet leaders from the Greek side of the divided island, after the Greek Cypriots blocked a friendly soccer game, an official said.

Turkish Cypriot soccer team Cetinkaya had been scheduled Wednesday to play Britain's Luton Town, but the game was canceled after Greek Cypriot officials complained to international soccer authorities that the match would violate a sports embargo against the Turkish side.

"The Greek Cypriot side is not even able to tolerate a friendly match," said Rasit Pertev, aide to Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

"It is not possible to make plans for a meeting between the two leaders under these circumstances," Pertev told The Associated Press by telephone.

Pertev said he conveyed the decision during a meeting with Greek Cypriot President Tasos Papadopoulos' aide during which they were expected to set a date.

Cyprus is divided into a Greek Cypriot south — represented by the internationally recognized government — and a Turkish Cypriot north recognized only by Ankara. The two sides agreed a year ago to start negotiations toward eventual reunification, but there has been little activity.

Vasilis Palmas, the Greek Cypriot government spokesman, said he hoped the Turkish side would reconsider.

"We hope there will be second thoughts, and the meeting between the leaders of the two communities will be set to start procedure to implement July 8 agreement," Palmas said in reference to the agreement last year to start negotiations.

Talat on Tuesday had accepted an invitation to meet Papadopoulos. No date was set for the meeting, but Talat reportedly said such meetings should be held regularly between Cyprus' community leaders.

The United Nations has pushed the two sides to reopen negotiations, after Greek Cypriot voters in 2004 rejected a U.N. reunification plan that Turkish Cypriots accepted in a separate referendum.

U.N. spokesman Brian Kelly said Thursday that the world body was ready to facilitate the negotiation process, and hoped a meeting between the leaders would be held.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded after a failed Athens-backed coup by supporters of union with Greece.
