Regulus Black
I know that Regulus Black is Sirius' younger brother and that he is mentioned in The Order of the Phoenix when Sirius and Harry are looking at the tapestry and also in The Half-Blood Prince. Does anyone remember whether or not he is discussed in any of the earlier books?

Not that I can remember. Heck, Sirius is only mentioned briefly in SS/PS when Hagrid says he got the flying bike from Sirius. Then nothing about him until PoA.
I don't remember anything about Sirius having a brother in GoF, and thenRegulus was mentioned in OotP. But no middle name was mentioned.

I've *heard* that his full name is Regulus A. Black... initials "R.A.B." I don't have any of my HP books right now (I'm on vacation) so I can't look it up to verify it!!

Many have come to some type of conclusion that R.A.B. is Regulus, but we don't know for sure. If you go over to Mugglenet or the Leaky Cauldron websites they had an interview with Jo Rowling which is the same on both sites. They interviewed her together. Anyways they asked her about R.A.B. and they told her that their guess is Rugulus Black and she didn't really comment on it any further. But if you haven't read the transcripts I would suggest heading over and reading them (3 pages worth). It will answer some questions and bring new theories to your imagination.

hmmm, I'm not so sure about Regulus being R.A.B., myself. I think in book five, Sirius says his brother was killed just a couple days or so after trying to leave the death eaters. Whoever R.A.B. is, I would think he'd have to be a pretty kick-a$$ wizard to be able to figure out where Voldemort's horcrux was, and go get it successfully. anyone that good could probably survive more than a couple days after leaving the death eaters--if it had been Regulus, he probably would have high-tailed it to Dumbledore and told him about destroying the horcrux.
also, the note R.A.B. leaves mentiones dying soon, which is probably a realization that the potion would kill him shortly, as opposed to figuring the death eaters would get him.

But I thought J.K. said she wasn't going to introduce any new characters in book 7, so it'd have to be someone we've already heard of... right?

Not sure--I don't recall hearing that, but I'm not as up as others on interviews with JKR and the like--maybe I can find something, though. That would definitely help with the speculations!

She may not introduce a new character, but she can drag someone we head one line from say, in CoS. Some one liner about someone we totally put out of our mind, but he's not new.
