Returning
So, I've been thinking about this place a lot lately. It seems that over the years (wow, it's actually been years!) when I'm at a crossroads or flat-out lost, I yearn for this board. I miss this place!

Part of me says I should leave and never come back - I read some of the old posts, and I see manniac's name all over the place, and I see this great place that Nous set up, and somehow it reminds me of all that I've lost - of all that can be lost. Then the damned hackers made it worse - my post about Mr. Fluttersby's passing was only made here, and I cannot tell you how much I regret losing that.

But then there's this other part. The part that remembers the word games and the laughter, the amazing poetry and prose, DeShaz's first (?) public posting of her work, Dart's infrequent but touching visits, flirting with Damnit Jim, reading Keld's amazing Haiku with awe . . . so many good things.

So I can't quite figure out how to reconcile all that. I find myself laughing through my tears as I read all the old stuff. There's this incredibly strong urge to write here, but then the fear of losing it again - of losing the camraderie we once had, and I think still have here. *sigh*

In the end though, I keep coming back. The link for this place is the only one on my toolbar, and I think of it often. So for now, I'm here. At a crossroads with no map once again, and so I'm here - the only place on the vast 'net where I have ever felt truly safe and truly welcomed. And in a strange, sweetly melancholy way, it's good to be home.

Good to see you Fluttersby - as you can see we have of late been attempting to blow life through these halls, but it is hard - I was just thinking about making a few additions when I saw your posts. Hope to see you around the place a wee bit ;)

It is very good to see you again, fluttersby. I've thought about you often, especially the loss of that post.

Strange, sometimes, the things we remember. This place is filled with many good memories and I've been mourning the loss of a few of the saddest.

Re: Returning
Yeah, me too. I'm really glad to see manniac's final words to us here again. I don't know why we need to keep those sad things . . . but maybe I do. When it comes to the sadness in my life, there is a part of me that found comfort in knowing that even in the loss of Mr. Fluttersby there was some good. I thought my eulogy here was fitting, and I know he would have been proud. Maybe that's what it was.

Anyway. I don't want to dwell on it. Let's talk of happier things. Like this place! It has a pulse again! Let's make it what it used to be. Every time I see those "where did everyone go?" topics, everyone seems to come out of the woodwork to say "I'm here", but then no one stays. Well, for my part, I'm staying. I'm going to post some poetry and news of my life, my commentary on the arts and literature in the world, and so on, and so on. Hopefully you all will get sick enough of reading my prattle that you'll join me! :D

I'll be back tomorrow (or later tonight if I can't sleep)!

Re: Returning
I can buy into that, Fluttersby - so from now on I'll add some poems (which is what I do) and check in with news of my none-too-exciting life.

For starters, I'm off to Corsica in ten days' time to trek across it. Has anyone done this who has any hints 'n tips?.

I've not been to Corsica but I can give you some tips on trekking, though most of it is common sense stuff like make absolutely sure you have well fitting, broken-in boots, choose your routes carefully and don't bite off more than you can chew...

The biggest failings I've experienced as trail-leader are ruined feet and people struggling lugging too much weight, but keep you energy levels up (i'd recommend a hydration pack) make sure you can wrap up and peel off quickly and away ya go!

I fully expect to see pics! ;)

I knew you'd be in there with advice, dude ;)

Hydration pack - I assume you mean like your camelbak?

Boots - newly bought. I was gonna take the old Berghausen, but there are now holes in the soles! The new ones are a well-fitting Karrimor mid boot, snug enough round the ankles with plenty of toe room.

Route planning is my mate's job as he got hold of the maps. I'll just have to pore over them before we get there to make sure there's nothing out of my league.

On the pack side, I'm in a fix coz I have two packs and one is gonna be way too big, the other impossibly small. Have to take the biggie though - it's more comfortable and just better all round. Have to remember not to overfill it tho.

Oh take the bergen for sure - you can tweak it's straps to shrink it's dimensions quite easily and as i'm sure you're aware, having more space than you need is less of a problem than having in sufficient.

I wouldn't have thought there is much 'out of your league' on Corsica, if trekking is all you're planning, and even though I would normally advise caution on daily tab lengths, I know you have stamina in reserve and your map man is a serious cyclist, so apart from drunken shenanigans I can't see any mishaps on the trail for ya :b
