Russia can build faster computers than any European country
2001-07-31 - The creation of a Russian supercomputer allowed to cope with the negative factors caused by the US embargo on delivery of highly productive computers to Russia. The vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Fortov expressed this opinion on Tuesday at the collegium of the ministry of industry, science, and technologies of Russia.

The computer of teraflop productivity "trillions of operations per second" MVS-1000M developed in Russia was presented at the session.

According to Fortov, this system with 1 teraflop capacity ranks among the 30 world's most powerful computers. And only in 1999 none of Russian computers was among the 500 most highly productive systems, the academician emphasized.

The Russian MVS-1000M is 50-100 times more productive than the computing systems which can be imported to Russia by the permission of American authorities. The academician believes that this will provide technological independence to Russia in a globalizing economy and permit it to shift to a new technological level in such spheres as nuclear energetics, ecology, molecular and gene engineering, designing of aviation and space systems and others.

Fortov considers it a huge merit of the Russian supercomputer's designers that its price is 5-10 times below than that of its foreign analogues and that the system provides remote access of users to its resources. Already today the computer is overloaded - more than 50 institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences are admitted to work on it.

The academician said that the next step will be creating by the year 2003 even more powerful computer MVS-5000 with capacity of 5 teraflop. The cost of the project will be 20 million dollars.

Responding journalists' question concerning the long-term elaborations in computing technics, academician Fortov said that "the next generation of computers will be designed on absolutely different physical principles, e.g. the quant computers".

According to Fortov, works in this direction are already conducted in Russia.

Russia
I don't remember who it was that said Russia was way behind western Europe in computer technology. This article should prove the opposite. Russia is not behind anyone in computer technology except for USA and Japan.

Re: Russia
Itchie,it is true that nobody in their right mind would buy a French, British or German computer - but I wouldn't buy a Russian one either. Perhaps some centralised facility can produce a good mainframe-equivalent. But when it comes to producing micros and getting one sitting in every schoolroom, and thereby generating a generation of coders and possibly electronics engineers, no way. Russian science has always been patchy - good in say ONE or two areas of medecine, but way behind on average. They still havent got that synergy going between the military-industrial complex and the mighty consumer. How many good Russian games have there been apart from Tetris ? :lol

PS: actually most Japanese PC's (Sony or NEC or Fujitsu) are poor spec per $ compared to US ones. Always wondered why.
