Schools in England
Just wondering if anyone knows how common the boarding school type of (pre-college) school is in England.
I just always feel sad for the parents sending their young kids off to school every year, especially the Muggle parents, like Hermione's who probably feel especially distant from their children when they go off to a wizarding school...almost like it's a whole other world!

I don't think I COULD! Oh...I don't think I could watch her go.
But, you know, if she liked the school, I can see several advantages to an immersion like that. In the early years...you know, through grammar school...I think it's hideous to send children away. They need their parents, then. But at or after age 12 (or, I GUESS, 11), I don't think any great damage would be done by attending a boarding school.
I just don't know if I could let her go.

Even at the age of eleven or twelve, though, it seems strange to think of a child spending more of their time every year with people other than their parents. Parenting would pretty much be done at that point, as far as the daily things. And from the child's perspective, while there are responsible and trusted adults around (teachers, etc), there's still no one that is especially for that child, whom that child has a special claim on.
And of course, both IRL and in HP, it's probably unprofessional for the teachers to be too warm and fuzzy, but young kids still need warm and fuzzy!
Sigh. I missed my fam so much when I went to college, and I was 18!
