Seeing the spirit of the spiritless for the first time
Ok, I hold a cold spot in my heart to anything resembling a crocodile or shark....including all varieties of shark save whale sharks and any croc cousin such as aligators kamen ect. this is not because im only into cute and cuddlys cause im not...i love spiders snakes and various other lizards including komono dragons.
that said....here is my lesson from crocodile.
I lost my sattelitte remote, so when steve erwin came on animal planet i couldnt change it without channel serfing via button....and thats just annoying. so for a rare moment, i left it be.
Seems there was a tiny island which had recently gained its independance (with help from the australian army affectionatly known as "diggers") The distraught diggers put in a desperate plea to the world animal society, who subsequently sent in steve erwin and the sidney zoo croc crew.
it sems the occupying army , because crocs were sacred to native islanders and to demoralize the islanders, tormented and mistreated 2 sacred crocs. The male...an 11 ft boy steve named anthony, was kept in a 7 foot concrete pool...with no access to land for 13 years. the female...omg...she was in what amounted to a shallow sewer for 11 years. she was blind in one eye...due to sadistic military personal coming out DAILY poking her with sharp sticks, breaking her teeth and poking out her eye. the water she was in was so filled with dead bodies (of various species including human and dog) which was long decaying, soda cans, plastic bottles paper and a large assortment of refuse so deep she was not able to submerge more then halway up her body. and could not turn around at all...her only movements were a few inches back and forth.
the female was obviously the worse of the two. they zoomed in on her...and for the first time in my life I saw what i had long beleived wasnt there....the soul of a crocodile. and it broke me... for all her spirit could say was "end this" I sat in shamefull tears and watched as they roped her with no more fight in her then a moarnfull obvious "just let me die" growl no head thrashing, no snapping, no tugging. she never MOVED. NOT croclike behavior by far. As big as she was, she should have given even this large group of experts and diggers a run for their money. she didnt. they removed her easily, was rewarded with a bit of fight when she was placed for the first time in her life on dry land and tackled and moved to a truck. they took her to the sea to wash away so many years of abuse and neglect. as the wonderfull diggers scrubbed under erwin and the sydney crews direction, LIFE began to eminate from her beautifull (yes shad i said it, beautifull) body. She began to fight a little. then they took her to her new home. a beautifull croc habitat made especially for her by the islanders, diggers and croc experts. this was no small feat considering virtually no contractors were running due to the war...it was done all by laymen in a house foundation donated by the local church.
when they got her to the pen and released her...there it was! what i had always taken for spiritlessness....was in actualaity strength so deep, so amazingly strong, that nothing, not even the light of its spirit, could be seen because of it!
And I cried, and I thanked croc for granting me this lessons...I still fear them...but am no longer feeling cold in my heart when I see them. And, in crocs honor, I asked for amazing blessings on the heads of those wonderfull diggers...who didnt take the easy way out an euthinize her but sought, found and assisted in aide for her. THAT is an army yo be proud of!
thanks for listening.

Oh,I wish I could have seen that.It sounds like an amazing story,Gaia. And I'm glad you understand, now, that ALL creatures have a beautiful soul, whether thier outward appearance and behaviour is frightening or not.
I would never go walking up to a croc, either. At one point in my life,I would have, but I don't have the stamina to do that anymore. If I could have worked with someone like Steve Irwin when I was 20,it would have been my dream job. But,I'm a weirdo, what can I say.I see beauty in almost every living thing, including the ones I can't stand(I'm mortally afraid of bees, believe it or not.Yeah,I know,"You love snakes and spiders, but you're afraid of BEES?" YES!!!).Every creature has a purpose(except maybe lice),and fills some niche in the great scheme of things.Croc is ancient, and fears little.Croc is strong, quick, and merciless. But how gentle a mother can be,when covering her nest,so she doesnt damage even a single egg,or when helping the young get safely to the water.
They truly are amazing animals.

I would have cried so hard trying to watch that, tears in my eyes now. How anyone could treat a living being that way is beyond me. I thank goddess for people like Steve Erwin.

Steve Irwin is quite a character and caught my attention at first just by his way of talking and what seemed to be his insanity. But by watching his show I learned to love and admire these reptiles. My heart breaks for these two mistreated crocs who have spent so many years of their lives in these conditions, and am so thankful that they have been rescued. (Wish I could have seen it too, shadeaux, maybe they will re-run it).

Now, THAT is one AWESOME story. Thanks for sharing it, G-Angel.
I like Steve Irwin a lot...true, he's a little flakey, but he's tops with the animals.
Strange thing, though...every time I hear his voice, I see Robin Williams' face.... (Daingah, daingah, daingah!)
