To those of you here at U&D that pop into this forum, I’d like to ask a few questions on the subject or >gulp< Shakespeare.
Put simply, I want to integrate the Bard into some Acting work I’m doing this summer with young adults (15-18yrs), and I’m looking for some inspiration. I’ve studied and acted Shakespeare, and could plod along a cosy formulaic path of scene stealing and soliloquies, but I’d like to ask:
Do you appreciate the Bard? If so…
What are your favourite plays, scenes, sonnets, soliloquies etc. Anything inspirational, or anything that you can recite from memory?
Have you enjoyed any cinematic Shakespeare, from Kenneth Brannagh to 10 things I hate about you?
What are your favourite Shakespearean characters? Do you identify with any or harbour a secret desire to play The Dane for example?
Any input will be greatly appreciated

Well, I think my favorites depend on my mood. When I'm in a good mood - Much Ado About Nothing. When I'm down - Hamlet. But then there's As You Like It and Taming of the Shrew, both way high on my list. I could do this for hours though - it's all so damn good!
As for movies, I adored Shakespeare In Love. It's a great way to get kids into and motivated by Shakespeare. And I think pointing out the bawdy in his stuff is pretty key to getting that age group to enjoy it.
My favorite character of all time has got to be Dogberry from Much Ado - and Kenneth Branagh's film was fabu. Michael Keaton was perfect!! I really liked the Leo DiCaprio version of Romeo and Juliet as well as Mel Gibson's Hamlet.
So there's my two cents.
