Sharing Samples
I have a 90-minute tape with some original material that I put together about 10 months ago with a 4-track. Its mostly improvisational, and I can't really say I'm that happy with it--though I did put a lot of work into it. I was just having a lot of fun with my new toy (electric piano) and wanted to get some ideas down on tape. Can anybody offer any suggestions as to how I could get some of it online?
I have a similar problem regarding the lyrics that I shared in that other area of this board.
What I am waiting for is a computer with a sound card so that I will have access to a "mic" or "aux" input.
With that and a program for importing analog audio it will be easy to transform the analog (tape / record / etc.) into digital (MP3).
If you want further capabilities, there are some programs that have the ability to transform the digital audio into CD-audio (they're different animals) and record to blank disks.
For specifics on the various programs (there are many ranging in cost from $25 to $125+), I would have to recommend that you talk with your local software dealer for whatever minimal comparisons they can assist with.

Re: Sharing Samples
Thanks, Dart. I am severely limited by the fact that I do not have a computer. A friend has a computer with a sound card and CD burner. I guess I could invest in software, even if I'll be installing it on his computer.
Once I have some songs in MP3 format, what can I do to get something online without having to worry about copy protection?
Edited: I just emailed a friend--he said he can create .wav files from analog recordings. Should I be aware of any problems transferring .wav files to MP3 format, or with .wav files in general?

Re: Sharing Samples
If you are worried about copywrite protection, I would recommend transcribing the words, dating the document and having it notarized for dating purposes. It will also be limited in accessibility if posted to this board or even to your own website.
Since I am not a professional performer, however, I would likely not worry about any music being performed by somebody else. If it is good enough to perform, then I would like to have it performed.
RE .wav files: The only problem with these files is the MASSIVE amount of space required; I would only maintain the *.wav until the MP3 was created and clean enough for my preferences.

Re: Samples Dart.
I'm only slightly worried about copywrite protection. None of the songs have lyrics, so there's no problem there. The only thing would be people stealing the music itself (not to perform, but to commercialize), and I'm pretty sure nobody would really want it. But, you never know.

Re: copyrights & instrumental music
Can't advise on that aspect; I would have to recommend talking to a lawyer specializing in patents/copyrights for ways to protect the work if you are concerned.
1. Make a copy of the tape or (if you burn a CD, just burn a second one).
2. Send the copy of the tape or CD to yourself via certified mail. Save the receipt.
3. When the CD/tape that you've mailed yourself arrives, do not open the package. Tape the receipt to the package and store somewhere safe.
If you ever hear someone misusing/stealing your music, you take them and the package to court where it is opened by court officers. The certified mail date/postmark/records are valid proof in a court of law that you made the contents on such and such a date.
Hmmm...are you posting from work, Wanderer?

Re: Copyright Protection
record your analog stuff on your friends computer (as Waves) and download CDeX, which will convert the format of your tunes to mp3's... submit to mp3.com or some such organization and then await approval........
