Some Advice on Written Communication
Some advice from one who learned the hard way:
The written is powerful. Under the right circumstances, it can bring out deep emotions. Anyone in a role that requires communication must realize this.
Communication consists of a myriad of paths, and not just simple words and their placement. Inflection. Body language. Facial expressions. All of these things communicate things other than the words delivered by a communicator.
The originator and recipient of written communication BOTH must be keenly aware of this (more so the originator, though). Written words lack all of those additional methods of communication, and something written might prove disconcerting in some manner to the recipient, even though its intent was not to be disconcerting.
I learned this lesson long ago when I had to, well, fire someone from a position. (Was a staff position in our LARP game.) I handled this via email, and in retrospect, wished I hadn't. My written word was not sufficient for the task at hand.
I am always very careful now what I write when communicating with someone, especially when on a serious topic or perhaps offering criticism. Write your words down, re-read them, run it by someone else. Another perspective will do wonders. Ask Shantar, he runs stuff by me a lot at work.
I have seen a lot of that on EQ-related message boards, both in AiF and elsewhere. As officers, and even guildmembers, we strive to make our guild better, and that involves no small amount of brainstorming, hashing out of ideas, and criticism. When delivering our thoughts, we need to be aware of what I put forth here. As a reader, we need to really think about what's being put forth. As a reader, we need to be a little thick-skinned!
Just some advice from your favorite friendly wood elf ranger tailor.
