Re: Spoiler : question inside!
Is he evil in the Death Eater way, I'm not sure. Even with the latest development.
Is he evil in the fact that he took out his hatred of a dead man on his 11 year old child, He!! yes. That's just EVIL, to punish a child for the sins of his dead father.

He's immature in his rage against those who taunted him as teens.
That's not evil.
He is willing to get rid of his frustration and anger, though, by picking on a little kid (Harry) who had nothing to do with his father's behavior toward Snape.
That's not evil, either. It's cruel and it should be identified as cruelty...but it's not evil.
Snape is a hero. That's my story, and I'm going to stick with it to the bitter end.

Its evil, sorry.
Think of your child. Would you want your baby girl to get picked on by someone you were not as nice to when you were a kid? Esp if that person ended up being her teacher? NO! You would think that person was an evil person.
Snape is supost to be a grown up. Grownups do not take out their anger towards a dead man on their surviving child. To do so, is an evil thing. And he never got rid of his frustration. He continued to pick on Harry for years, I think, because it gave Snape a sick pleasure.
Smile, it makes people wonder what you're up to!

Re: Spoiler : question inside!
After learning in book one that he was trying to save Harry at the Quidditch match, I always felt he was good. Or if not "good", at least loyal to the right side. After the developments in book six, I'm not quite as sure, but one of the reasons I think he is still good, is chapter two. We've known since the end of book four that this is the kind of stuff Snape had to do, but to see him in action at it, is a bit disconcerting...anyone who can lie that easily and convincingly is the type of person you don't want to let your guard down around. That makes him seem suspicious, but if he were showing his true colors in chapter two, that would seem awful early in the book to put such a major character revelation.
Even if he's on the right side, he's still an unsavory character. But, if Umbridge can manage to not be a Death Eater, I think Snape can too.

Snape is a spy. Because he is a spy, and probably knew as well as Dumbledore did that Voldemort was never really gone for good, he had to make it possible for everyone to believe he truly was a Death Eater if necessary. That's why Dumbledore knows why he turned but nobody else does. Voldemort is, aside from Snape and possibly Dumbledore, the world's greatest legilimens. If any of the Gryffindor children knew the truth of Snape, he would be useless as a spy. Voldemort could detect his true loyalties throught he mind of any kid at Hogwarts. That's why Harry must believe he is truly hated by Snape and Draco must believe he is truly favored. Snape isn't about to blow his cover to assuage some hurt feelings; there is too much at stake. Think of Barty Crouch, Jr., playing the part of Mad-Eye Moody. It was important that he be believed good, so he was kind to Harry and Neville and turned Draco into a ferret. (Though he did hate DEs who'd denied loyalty to Voldemort, he had to play the good guy not because he wanted to but because he was undercover. Snape's just acting out Crouch Jr.'s advice---constant vigilance.

Oh, Fan, I just LOVE you.
You gave me a reason to cling onto hope. My deepest wish for the HP series (aside from all three of our little heroes to live through it) is that Snape and Harry will reconcile...and that Snape will finally receive the vindication he deserves.

I think Snape has always been rather evil. I'm wondering if Snape killed Dumbledore per DB's request through his mind? That DB felt like he was going to die a long slow death with all that potion in him? Whatcha think? DB obviously wanted Harry to watch and listen to what was being said & not in attack mode with the other members of the Order.
Sometimes I think Snape is with the Order and sometimes with Voldy. JKR has me all confused...just the way she wants it.
