Sports Illustrated's MAT MANIA! In 1985, Sports Illustrated did a cover story on pro wrestling. Due to my "Mid 80's WWF" jag, I went to the University library today and read the article for the first time. I was pretty disappointed in it. It was written mostly from the..I don't know the wrestling lingo word.... "in character" point of view, with lots of goofy pictures. I was expecting a more "behind the scenes" type article. In fact, it actually seemed like it was making fun of the WWF. Pro wrestling fans were made out to be goofs and rednecks (SOME of us are college educated), and it made wrestling look totally laughable. The writer also subtly ripped on wrestlers. Sometimes the jabs were blatant (e.g., referring to Tito Santana as "Tito the Burrito"). It was also horribly written. You'd think the guy never had an English course. I mean, I'm no Shakespeare, but this was ridiculous. Aside from that, the article centered on the recent poularity/going mainstream of pro wrestling. Maybe SI was getting a little worried about pro wrestling getting so big. They even mention that pro wrestling beat all the major sports in TV ratings. I suppose there were a few interesting tidbits. I think that it gave one of the first major, public acknowledgments that wrestling was "fake" (i.e., scripted). The info on Freddie Blassie's injuries was interesting. Maybe the article was appropriate for the time, but I didn't like it too much.

Re: Sports Illustrated's MAT MANIA!
Did it say anything about Hulk Hogan?

Re: Sports Illustrated's MAT MANIA! If I'm not mistaken on my wrestling history, Hulk Hogan was on the cover of that issue of SI. Am I right, Facilitypro? I'm pretty sure I read he was the only pro wrestler ever on the cover of SI. (I seem to recall that Andre the Giant was the first pro wrestler to have an interview/article about him in SI.) -'Tamer ![]() ![]() "Young lady, stars shine only in the sky, and stars which fall to earth never shine again." --Anubis, Dark Warlord of Cruelty |

Re: Sports Illustrated's MAT MANIA! Yeah, Hulk was on the cover. And Forest, they mentioned him quite a bit. I think the date of the issue was 4-29-85.
