Synchronicity
has anyone noticed the similarities between wicca, witchcraft and the ilk and the eastern martial arts?
Both use the idea of directed energy to do things, ourselves through magic, they through Chi. Breaking concrete with bare hands, astral projection et al are all abilities associated with some of these arts as well as our own.
The concept of centering oneself in magic is similar to the idea of finding your mental and spiritual balance in the martial arts (thanks Gaia Angel for making me realise that).
I have used martial art techniques of projected energy to assists breaking objects (aiming beyond them) which is a similar idea to sending energy in the form of a spell - but obviously using spells is done in a less offensive manner.
Any thoughts?

This is a conversation I have had with my son,Woodrat(Neil),on more than one occassion.The similarities are most definitely there.But it goes way further than that.In the lands where martial arts developed,methods for using energy to heal were also used.I will direct my son to this thread,because he's going to love to discuss this with you. he's been fascinated with Japanese culture since I can remember.He's also a Reiki master.
Thank you for starting this thread,I have a feeling it's going to become quite interesting.

as a person interested in eastern forms and especially chi-use, reiki master, a former pagan/wiccan, an artist and a musician, i have different takes on this one.
i mention art and music to draw a comparison.
chi use as i've seen it is directed and takes effect immediatly. chi is not always concussive it can also be healing and warm i.e. reiki. but it takes effect almost immediatly. like visual art, which has it's impact upon being viewed and it's magic is caught in time.
magic, is often not so immdiate, it's more like energy directed over a period of time to take effect. (exept healing, which in all truth is the same no matter what being that the intention to heal is a direct link to divinity). in essence magic is like music in that it's a change in energy levels over time and is often orchestrated like music.
also, the level of ritualism and ingredients use in magic is most often accentuated more than in chi use. chi use is often more internalized also whereas magic usually uses the external power around us. of course there are forms of both sides that use both.

Thats exactly it.
I guess what i was meaning is that such a wildly different thing as martial arts and magic are using the same 'primal energy' but in different ways and through different methods.
Much the same way that firewalkers and the like are using that same power albeit unconsciously to allow themselves to walk the coals and not be burned.

that Synchronicity was one of the first things I realized about pagandom....
I am a former martial arts student too, and find that the same force of centering the chi, is not much diffearnt that the force used to do reiki, or rites, or magick or even meditation
its all a matter of application of this engery and from where ones gets it... I fall into the same trance pattern when doing my artwork..
for things needing the chi its oneself...that you draw from for the most part ( till ya get very good at it.. then it becomes )
the same as used for magical, healing etc we are the channel for that engry ..raw power from a varity of sources..inculding raw eletraical power ( used to have a freind who could dim lights for a city block everytime she started up..
I think this capsity is in all humans and the synchosity we see is each cultures answer to useing that ability....their own flavor if you will to achive the same end..?

Most people who start out in the Craft
do so from a ritual point of view.
In fact a great many people
know little to nothing about
the metaphysics of the Craft even thou
they do it every time they hold ritual...
What do I mean by metaphysics ?
The sheer mechanics of the act.
The act of the craft, while covered in rite and ritual ,
which is a needful component,
( we couldn't do it without it...)
there are some physical facts related to it
that one should know.
This missive is a basic outline, with many out links....
as a starting point to learn more..
To Begin..
The world is surrounded by lines of electromagnetic force.
We humans run on electrical power.
Building a "cone" of power as used in the Craft,
is to create a directed force of this energy,
where we are the conduit.
The very word "Witch" means to twist or change,
in other words to effect changes
through the directed use of power.
This is not a new concept. If one were to take Kirlian photos
of any real religious rite, one would see the outline
of the power being raised.
We of the craft know this and use this build up of energy to directed purpose, which is all prayer is.. just we get a little more involved with the matter personally.
Now as to how this all works....
Recent science has proven to its own satisfaction,
what we of the Craft have always known...
called the Ley lines of force,
the world is surrounded by.
They have nexus points where they cross..
and surprise a great many of the old sites of power
are located at these nexus points..
We humans have our own points of connection
called Chakras,
which have also been "known" for many centuries.
And again current day science
has been able to map these currents
using Kirlian photos
as they move thur the body
and thereby prove to others,
what we already knew..
While the bulk of lore on Chakras
is on their emotional aspects.
For example a person with a closed heart chakra would have issues with emotional commitment or love.
However as with most things
there are two levels of understanding
and knowledge of the Chakras are no different.
Our body is like a circuit board....
and the Chakras are the transformers.
...for the Will and the Way...
as well as emotional centers
and aspects of our life force....
Which is why they are a major meditation subject......
yet another good thing to know
as a practitioner of the Craft...
how to meditate...
Now ready for some real confusion ...
This most eastern of arts the Chakras,
has connection with the Cabalistic tree of life,
which has been studied most by the Hebrews
As well as has been used in one form or another
in a variety of other sects thurout history...
Truth is truth as is seen by all...
So Ley lines, Chakras, the Cabala..
Meditation ... Jungian archetypes and Philosophy ......
What on earth has all this got to do
with the Craft and how its practiced ?
Well as you can see most of the things
we Pagans tend to work with
and believe in are all interrelated
..to put it simply..
The Human being, during an act of the Craft
uses the currents of the Earth, run thur the body and sent out to a given purpose. Done correctly the amount of energy one needs is taken directly from the ground
( now you know why most rites are done barefoot )
and sent out thur the Earth Ley lines
and beyond to the tree of life.
The channeling
to the high Preist/Preistess of the energy drawn
by many people is what creates the cone of power
( and that's another long known and finally agreed to by science that it really IS a cone of energy )
Star wars wasn't far off when they said
" may the force be with you"
To "ground and center" takes on a whole new meaning
when seen in this light..!
And is more important than ever
when dealing with this kind of force..
This kind of force, is one reason we cast a protective circle
around our work, its not just to protect us
from outside influences,
but to contain this kind of energy.
Before we release it back to the domain
from which it came with a directed Will.
And does this make us all some kind of Wizard
tossing fire balls around ?
MOST CERTAINLY NOT!
We are just the same as any other devout person who petitions the Divine
for Aid and guidance as we make our way thur life.
Now why did I bring this up at all?
Simply put there are some practitioners of the Craft who know nothing at all about these things and how they relate to the use of the Craft and as a result produce not as much effect with their rites as they otherwise might.
Their intent is honest and the will is there..
but if all one is working with,
is the current the body itself possesses
and operating on instinct,
the cone one can raise is not as powerful
as it could be.
Not to mention that one will be all but sick
and exhausted after its done.
And if you have been giving a read
to all the pages I have put up
you will understand why
( YOU have been giving the rest of them a read right?
Now can you raise power with the help of the divine and
be a good practicing Witch without knowing all this?
Of course you can.... been done for centuries.
But if you want to be very good at what you do
and make your efforts really count when they are needed
then these are things to know and practice and you will find your workings have much more effect and ease of creation.

Im glad to know it wasnt just me being freaky by thinking of things that way, it just seemed odd to me for a while that there were so many similarities between such things.

and no your not the least bit freaky... you have stumbled over something very profound, to realize the common thread that runs thur almost any tome of faith with good intent and honest revelation....and had the good insight to notice.. some may go their whole lives and never see this simple truth... I tripped over it at 23 and it made for me the most profound change.... even thou looking back on it.. it so obviouis, but thats the way of mysterys...hidden in plain sight....
( and yeah got a page on that too.. I get to cheat.. I have a web site with almost 300 pages on just about any subject ya care to name so can post anything related quickly.. ) in fact this and other boards are often the reason they are there, if a subject comes up I havnt covered yet... the question just gave me yet another topic for a web page eheheheheheh

Thought it might be of interest to tell you guys about a conversation I had with my son's Rabbi about a week ago. We were talking about how there are no coincidences, and I used the term "synchronicity" and he said "..and I (meaning himself) would call it Kaballistic" (which is the mystic arm of the Jewish faith) Just another example of how our paths are all different but the same.

Coolness.. the Kabal Is a favorite study of mine... for a lot of reasons. not the least of which is it works... the Jewish faith knows this.. and at one time thought to expunge the Kaballsitc from the tomes... being too pagan.. but realized they couldnt. it works too well to be dismissed so incorparated it into the Jewish faith...and have studied it and its effect for a long time...... love it when tools work..
